I'd LOVE a copy of this!

Tistheseason17 · 09/06/2019 17:51

Another atheist here who loved singing these songs - still do!! :)

Malbecfan · 09/06/2019 17:59

NRTFT but I have a copy here as I have to run singing assemblies in a primary school, although I haven't been brave enough to use any of them so far. Would you object to your kids singing these songs? We already do Shine Jesus Shine, Our God is a Great Big God and some of the modern ones but I fancy going back a bit. I've also done some new (to them) songs from other countries which they have enjoyed very much.

missbattenburg · 09/06/2019 18:04

Great thread! Dredging our long forgotten memories of my school days. It helps I am on holiday in an old, converted church so keep singing snippets of these 😀

Mamabear4180 · 09/06/2019 18:04

Yabu and a bit weird

Groovee · 09/06/2019 18:15

We sang a lot of these songs when we got to P3 and moved up to the "big" assembly.

We did sing one song that I think I have the wrong word for. The girls would sing "let's pull together!" And the boys sang "halambay" but I think that's wrong.

One more step along the world was sang at the P7 leavers when the whole school would turn and sing "when friends have to say goodbye, we often wonder why, although it's sad we have to say, we wish them happiness today!"

townlass · 09/06/2019 18:21

I brought a copy of this book a few years ago to educate my son!!
@Sproutsandparsnips We had Daisies are our silver.... and One more Step at our wedding. @Michealbaubles I loved I have seen the golden sunshine as well along with Autumn Days. My absolute favourite was I think number 79 (or 59) which started Think of all the things we lose, so many things I get confused, from pencil sharpeners, favourite books, from indoor shoes and outdoor boots. Pocket money down the drain, felt tip pens and people's names...... Sounds like my life now😅

ThePestOfTheYear · 09/06/2019 18:43

Oh, what was that one that went something like..

God’s in this place, Don’t touch my face, The years come and go, The farmer will sow,
His wife’s in the bath, you take the right path....

shoesarefab · 09/06/2019 18:57

My kids still sing these songs! Church of England prep school. I get quite excited singing along in chapel assembly 😂

As an aside, Mum was bought up as a Jehovah’s Witness, dad as a Roman Catholic and I am very anti religion off the back of it. Can’t beat a bit of Lord of the Dance though

ChickyBee · 09/06/2019 19:11

The head teacher of our Junior school once had to stop the assembly because virtually the whole school was singing " I was cold, I was kn#ckere#!" One of the funniest memories of that school. My personal fave was no. 54 Colours of Day...

LarryGreysonsDoor · 09/06/2019 19:31

LADIES.

I have a copy of the piano version of Come and Praise.
It’s tucked away and I don’t really need it anymore.
If anyone wants it then PM me and I’ll post it to you.

toffeeghirlinatwirl · 09/06/2019 19:33

We had the blue Come and Praise and I remember loads of the hymns mentioned but not Autumn Days and the later ones.
We also had the older hardbacked (cellotaped as they were falling to bits) hymn books full of gloom and doom and “dark satanic mills.” Collective groans when the old books got handed out. Whoops of delight when it was C&P days!
Also went to Sunday school for no other reason than the enthusiastic action songs and palma violets/ swizzels at the end.

My kids all sang “Gloria, Gloria (clap, clap, clap) in excelsus deo”. at parent assembly and mass all of the adults clap enthusiastically too!
Every last day of summer term “Days” by The Kinks was sang for the year 6 leavers and any outgoing staff. I’m filling up even thinking about that song.

lionheart · 09/06/2019 19:36

This is fantastic--I can still hear so many of these with just a one line prompt. Smile

deste · 09/06/2019 19:37

Quellium, "Jet planes meeting in the air to be refuelled".🎶 I have actually seen this happen, just above my house .

toffeeghirlinatwirl · 09/06/2019 19:49

@CurlyhairedAssassin -Re Singing Together.
None of my friends ever seem to remember these songs. I can still recall (forgive spelling)
“La ca caratcha” (the gayest dance in Mexico) lots of nudges and stifled giggles;
“Yellow bird high up in banana tree”;
“dance the hopac (fold your arms and crouch down low)”
And one that went “and I told my wife, run for your life, and I told my son, my work’s done, but the land was sweet and good, I did what I could.
The big wireless would be brought into the classroom (like the big tv, but obviously it was a radio) and Miss would switch Radio 4 on live and we’d marvel that hundreds of other schools across the nation were all about to sing the same as our classroom. I didn’t leave primary until 1982 but when I retell this, I get looked at like I’ve just dropped out of 1950 or I’m making it up!

Mary54 · 09/06/2019 19:52

Why would you even think that it could be unreasonable? You are giving your child access to a wonderful resource that can help him express his beliefs in joyous songs of praise. I think it’s a lovely thing for you to have done

Zippy1808 · 09/06/2019 19:57

I loved singing all those hymns in primary school. So many fond memories. Did consider buying s copy once to try to teach my form group them in tutor time but decided against it incase parents objected to it.... not to mention the 13 year old little darlings being obviously objectionable in their oh so happy way Grin

MaximusHeadroom · 09/06/2019 20:01

We had 'one more step' at our wedding, our kids christenings and my dad's funeral.

We are climbing Jesus' ladder was great one too.

reup · 09/06/2019 20:13

I went to 4 different primary schools in the 70s and loved loads of these but some do not ring any bells. Weirdly I always thought Cross over the road was from a really modern book in my last school, whereas I assumed other ones like To be a pilgrim, when a knight won his spurs, and Oh Jesus I have promised were ancient and traditional!

To a couple of previous posters- I loved Captain Noah and his floating ark and bought it once in a charity shop.

I also loved Land of the Silver Birch - we sang it a lot in my last primary school. We were learning a secret song to sing for our headmaster (Men of Sussex) - not sure why I don’t think he was retiring. Anyway we had to practice quickly changing for Sussex to Silver Birch in case he came in. Loads of fun.

I used to like the one about mice in Amsterdam. A music teacher told us off for singing saw like sawing wood instead of seeing- which I still don’t understand!!

LimeKiwi · 09/06/2019 20:18

OMG, had completely forgotten about half of these!

Give me oil in my lamp keep me burning

and the autumn days one especially

How come it's been over 30 years since I was at primary (ARGH I'm old) and my head just sang all the words immediately?! Grin
Amazing the stuff I retain but can't remember what I did yesterday lol

TigerTooth · 09/06/2019 20:22

I’m getting one!
🎵 Why do you tell me - you’re lonely? And say for you that the sun don’t shine? Let me take you by the hand and lead you through the streets of London., 🎵

GiantKitten · 09/06/2019 20:35

I can still recall (forgive spelling)
“La ca caratcha” (the gayest dance in Mexico)
lots of nudges and stifled giggles

Leaving aside the gayness, la cucaracha is Spanish for cockroach Grin

BlueberriesAndCream · 09/06/2019 20:40

I think some of them ARE traditional ones that were just printed in those books; they weren't composed specially for them. I've come across lots of the songs in other books - I'm not even sure we had those books, actually, as we mostly had overhead projector transparencies!

Still not found that alto/harmony/descant line to Cross Over the Road, though!! Been you tubing as hard as I can. I know it exists...

Whatkatyforgottodo · 09/06/2019 20:42

Love, love, LOVE this thread! Vividly remember most of these songs and love it when they are sung at weddings, christenings etc as I know the words and tune so don’t sound like a prat when I get it wrong! #holdupwaitamin ‘the lord said to Noah’ is definitely pre Simpson’s as I remember it used to drive our headteacher nuts when we sang it as he hated it! I hated this one, does anyone remember it... Abba father, let me be... really slow and dreary.
