How does everyone handle bathroom towels? Does everyone in family have their own towel? Or do you all share whatever towels are in the bathroom?

oh god, the minefield that is towels.

Hand towels in kids bathroom and downstairs loo. Washed once a week or so.

DS1 (12)does my head in. He will only use a towel once in spite of me telling him to use it at least 3 times, then he puts it, soaking wet into the washing basket (funnily enough he struggles to put his clothes in there and leaves them on the bedroom floor) so everything else in the basket gets damp and stinky unless I retrieve it swiftly.

DS2 will use whatever is nearest. No cares. Drops on floor after use. Could be anywhere. Bathroom, landing, bedroom, stairs. Wherever he decides he no longer needs it.
Neither child seems to understand the concept of the towel rail. I've said it often enough.

DH and I use/share whats in our en-suite. He will continue to use these forever unless I remove myself and wash them . He likes to hang towels over doors.
Again, we have a perfectly nice towel rail in the en-suite that we paid a fortune for.

I seem to wash towels every three days or so.

We have colour coded bath / hair towels (washed every couple of weeks because I'm not phobic about a few of my own - clean - skin cells and I'm trying to be a bit more environmentally aware) and share a hand towel. If we have guests staying they get their own colour coded pile of towels to use.

StoppinBy · 07/06/2019 12:12

DH and I share a towel but I also have one that is for my face and hair.

Kids have their own towels.

We share a hand towel.... I thought the point of washing your hands were that they were clean so I can't see why people need to have their own individual hand towels.

thegreatcrestednewt · 07/06/2019 12:12

We have our own bath towels but share hand towels. They get washed when they don't smell fresh, at 40. Hand towels get washed once a week.

Rezie · 07/06/2019 12:15

Hand towels are shared. Bathtowels are individual.

toomuchtooold · 07/06/2019 12:16

We have our own towels which are washed at 60 degrees after two days. We had worms once. I'm never going there again.

whyohwhyowhydididoit · 07/06/2019 12:17

We all have our own. Mine and DHs get a hot wash every week. DC are responsible for putting their own in the washing and aren’t quite as particular as me so theirs might only get washed every couple of weeks.

Floralnomad · 07/06/2019 12:19

Well my system obviously works as I’ve managed to raise 2 children to adulthood and none of us has ever had worms or nits .

1moremum · 07/06/2019 12:21

I grew up with the family shares the towels system, and all the years I had to take my washing to the launderette, I used that system too. When we bought a house finally, and had multiple bathrooms and a laundry room and my kids were teens then everybody got their own towels and to wash them as they see fit. After suffering through a period of whinging about towels they left in a heap on the floor to go sour, repeatedly, they eventually got the hang of it.

BellaVita · 07/06/2019 12:23

Own towels washed weekly and a hand towel in the bathrooms/downstairs loo also washed weekly.

HennyPennyHorror · 07/06/2019 12:23

We all share but both DC have some nice big beach towels which they got as gifts and which they tend to prefer. I try to make them last with one but we've all got loads of hair....takes two each every bloody shower.

Bluerussian · 07/06/2019 12:25

PS: I should have said we each had two towels, one big bath towel and one for smaller one for hair., washed every three days or so unless one is stained. Hand towel for toilet is changed and washed the same, as are bathmats.

Now there are only two of us at home, me and husband; our individual towels are positioned on the radiator/towel rack so we know which is which. Reminds me, must put towels in wash today and replace with fresh ones.

pigsDOfly · 07/06/2019 12:27

When my DCs were living with me we all had individual bath towels, which were changed every few day.

The hand towels were shared but changed pretty frequently, every few days or so, because they stop drying properly after a while.

I live on my own now and still do the same thing with the hand towel and obviously with the bath towels as well.

I can't understand how anyone can make a bath towel last a couple of weeks, they just seem not to dry anything after a few uses.

Justanothernamechange2 · 07/06/2019 12:28

We have our own towels and keep them on a over radiator airer in bedrooms. (Dp has left side of airer and i have right in our room) bathroom radiator just has a hand towel changed frequently for hand washing after the toilet.

PuppyMonkey · 07/06/2019 12:31

The never-ending joy of an MN towel-washing thread. Thank you, everyone.

All have own bath towel, washed when I remember at 40 degrees. Usually weekly, but sometimes not. Blush

Hand towels shared and washed about every other day at 40 degrees.

I see we've already had a 95 degree washer, any advances? Grin

Cruelstepmother · 07/06/2019 12:32

There's a shared towel to dry your hands on, and when someone wants a bath they get clean ones out of the cupboard, use the hand towel as a bathmat and put a fresh hand towel (allegedly - in fact I do that part!). There isn't room for a towel rail in our titchy little bathroom so it's the best way for us.

daisypond · 07/06/2019 12:32

We share all towels. It has never occurred to me to have individual ones. Neither DH or I had individual towels growing up.

GarthFunkel · 07/06/2019 12:34

Everyone has their own bath/hair towel. All different colours.
Hand towels are shared and changed regularly. Except DD has her own hand towel because she doesn't like wiping her hands where her brothers have wiped theirs. I have banned them all from my ensuite.

ElectricLions · 07/06/2019 12:36

Each person has their own colour for a bath towel and a matching hand towel.

The only hand towel that is shared is the one in the downstairs cloakroom.

The children have their own bathroom, Dh and I share the en-suite. Works well for us.

Get washed with Dettol laundry detergent.

Pascha · 07/06/2019 12:38

How does towel sharing work?

If the towel on the heated towel rail is dry we just use it. If it's just been used and damp there are fresh ones in the cupboard. Any that have had a few uses or been out for a couple of days get put in the washing pile.

Pascha · 07/06/2019 12:40

Also the heated towel rail is 6ft tall and can accommodate 3 towels comfortably, double that if neatly folded.

RoseMartha · 07/06/2019 12:42

We have hand towel each and bath towel each. Extra one out if have visitors. Washed weekly.

OvO · 07/06/2019 12:46

We share.

Theres a selection of bath sheets available in the bathrooms and anyone can use any one at any time (so not all sharing the one towel at the exact same time 😆 ).

They get washed when smelly, whenever that is.

itsonlysubterfuge · 07/06/2019 12:47

We have one towel that is shared between the three of us. We wash it after a couple of uses. In the summer we tend to go through more towels as they don't get properly dry because the radiators aren't on. In the winter I would say the towel is changed twice weekly.

AlexaAmbidextra · 07/06/2019 12:48

As this is MN I’m just waiting for the poster who changes all the towels three times a day and calls the rest of us grim for not doing the same. 😄
