I am greatly aware of our rights and understand autonomy but as far as I can see this young Dutch girl, Noa, did not end her own life but was assisted.

My heart goes out to her and her family but this is my absolute reason why euthanasia should not be supported.

@Chocoholicsasylum Thank you. I am sorry that you have had these experiences too. I am currently doing really well on a new drug, but I also know that the Black Dog is not far away.

@Jessiemalasca Your post is incredibly, open hearted and brave. I wish you and your family ongoing strength and peace.

I don’t know how I would feel if it. were my daughter. I go cold and feel sick contemplating it.

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 05/06/2019 16:30

May she rest in peace now

I think she was very clear on what she wanted and a just society allowed her . It’s tragic and awful . But some suffering cannot be borne
And in a years time she wouldn’t have changed her mind

I hope she is at peace
I hope her loved ones can take solace that her suffering is over

'And in a years time she wouldn’t have changed her mind '

Sorry, but how can you possibly know this for sure? I know your post comes from a place of empathy. But it is surely dangerous to consider that anyone with mental health problems will never get better and death is the kindest option.

Especially when that person is only 17. You change so much as you get older.

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 05/06/2019 16:37

Fair point
I suppose I am resigned to the fact that in most cases severe depression can’t be (easily) treated . Well not with the people I have seen . I have lost a lot of faith and actually truly see death as a better option that deep and unending mental turmoil

Basically I think that death is better than never ending mental pain

Were It my child I would have a different view I am sure x

MoominMantra · 05/06/2019 16:57

@stopfuckingshoutingatme yeah, I guess we all have opinions about it based upon our own life experiences. I am sure she did know her own mind and that would have been assessed in depth. It's just so sad.

Are you for real? Maybe I misunderstood your post but are you actually slagging off Noa's parents?!!!! Surely I'm wrong here?

@menuplant "Women around the world have being trying to get more done about rape for time immemorial."

It is a vicious circle. I see it exactly for what it is.

Men use rape and sexual abuse to keep women down. What is the most damaging thing that you can do to a person's psyche and belief in themselves? Rape them.

Women as a collective are then too weak and afraid to speak up to demand more protection and rights.

We need to get together to protest that too many young women are dying and
a) violent porn needs to be banned. I have talked to numerous men about this and they said that they get alot of violent ideas towards women from porn.
The government needs to allocate alot of money into tacking rape

The story is not true, according to a journalist who has been covering her case for years, but that hasn’t stopped it from spreading at lightning-speed.

Morgan the story is indeed not true. www.theguardian.com/world/2019/jun/05/noa-pothoven-netherlands-girl-not-legally-euthanised-died-at-home

The original source which spread it to the English language media is apparently known to be unreliable. Not at all surprised the Daily Mail picked it up though - papers of that ilk do so like to slate any country that tries to have some progressive policies.

EdtheBear · 05/06/2019 21:36

It's still a heart breaking story. My heart goes out to her parents.

I don't think I could stand back and let my DC do that to themselves.

No! I was being sarcastic about the person who said "what's the problem?". I mean , I wouldn't be surprised to see some of those people spouting nonsense like that

Aurelia Brouwers visits the facility where she will be cremated in nine days' time

This was a caption from the BBC article linked above, about the 29-year old Dutch woman who was euthanized because she has depression. So whoever said this doesn't happen in Holland is wrong.

There is also a photo of her as a child about 10, smiling in her garden in the sunshine. It is heartbreaking to look at. She is now dead.
