My MIL is firmly of the belief that I'm an 'old' mum (her words, not mine!) As I was 34 when I first became a mother.

I thought I was probably about average, or at least I seem to be for my group of friends.

MIL was 24 so yes I can understand that I'm a full 10 years older, but not quite as decrepit as she has made out. This charming remark was followed by the suggestion that my eggs will soon be dried up so if I want more I need to do it this year (I'm 35). Am I being naïve or is she old fashioned in her views?

Some hospitals do use "geriatric" still though, a friend was described as this at 34 last year.

Weirdly DP and I will be exactly the same age as our DPs (i think) for both DC so clearly we are following in their footsteps haha

Dandelion1993 · 02/06/2019 19:46

Technically you were an older mum. My midwife said anything over 30 is classed as older.

I was 20 when I had our first and just had our second aged 25

SherlockSays · 02/06/2019 19:48
  1. I don't think 34 is old at all, MIL will be from the same generation as mine - I've been badgered about kids since I was 22.
Metalhead · 02/06/2019 19:48

30 when I had DD1 and 36 when DD2 was born.

PortiaCastis · 02/06/2019 19:49

18 when I had dd and my Mum was 22 when she had me so I made her a Gran at 40

ZippyBungleandGeorge · 02/06/2019 19:49

34, if she says it again just say to her by old do you mean sensible? I spent my twenties having a life.

golddustwomen · 02/06/2019 19:50

21 with my first, 24 with my second. Hopefully I'll have my 3rd and last before I'm 30 - 3 years to go !

Youngandfree · 02/06/2019 19:50

28 for first and 30 for second

42 - and no one said anything about it at any point in my prenatal care or delivery.

fedup21 · 02/06/2019 19:51

25 when I had my first. It sounds quite young now (this was in 2000) but we’d both established our careers, got a mortgage and got married so it didn’t actually seem that young at the time.

DesertSky · 02/06/2019 19:51

1st baby aged 22 & 11 months, 2nd aged 25.5 and 3rd aged 29

Most of my mum friends were older having their first.

GrandTheftWalrus · 02/06/2019 19:53

I would've been 31 if she'd arrived on time. However she was 8 days late so I was then 32.

MOB247 · 02/06/2019 19:54

23,26,29 ... not ideal if I had my time again it would definetly be later!

LoulouTheroux · 02/06/2019 19:55

17 with my first and I’ve recently had my 4th. I’ll be 37 in August.

LoulouTheroux · 02/06/2019 19:56

Oh and I made my mum a gran at 36! She was a young mum too!

Ivegotthree · 02/06/2019 19:57

32

PouncerDarling · 02/06/2019 19:57

I was twenty seven.

EC22 · 02/06/2019 19:58

21 when I had my 1st, last ( I think?) at 35.

Kanga83 · 02/06/2019 19:59

31 and 33. Didn't feel old, although I know I'd certainly not manage another newborn now at 36. My BIL has just come a dad again and celebrating his 50th this year. As long as you're a good parent that's all that matters.

agirlhasnonameX · 02/06/2019 20:00

17 when I had my first, 25 when I had my second. Coming up 29 now and would love another but don't think it's likely Sad

I would think someone who had a baby at 34 was an older mother.

agirlhasnonameX · 02/06/2019 20:01

I would NOT think someone at 34 was an older mother rather.

MyFavouritePlace · 02/06/2019 20:03

38 and nearly 41 with my second. I feel old!

Rach182 · 02/06/2019 20:05

I would say 34 is average first time mum in London and the South East. Average age of ftm in the UK hit 30 for the first time last year.

I was 27 and felt like a teen mum as was first among my London friends... though I was last among my home friends in Wales so it really varies from region to region.

Veryangryvicuna · 02/06/2019 20:05

Had my first at 19 (not by design) and my 4th (And probably last) at 33. I’m 35 now - I don’t think of myself as old at all, I feel like on the prime of my life! And if I hadn’t started so early, I’d have happily finished my family past this age. But I suppose in terms of fertility, I’ve probably got less than 10 years left - maybe considerably less, Simon that sense I suppose 35 is an older mum?
