Is this a bit excessive?

This is petty and lighthearted before anyone wades in.

DH thinks IABU but when DS and I are here alone all week we probably use 4 pints of milk in the weekdays (1 big container).

DS is away and DH is here with his 2 teenage DC.

DH and I have 1 cup of coffee in the morning, thats it. His DC have unlimited cups of tea and we are getting through 4 pints of milk a day. IMHO this is excessive and a bit ridiculous.

Am 1?

I always find it funny when step mums or in your case wife of your husbands kids (?) complain about the amount their teenage step kids eat (especially boys) when they’ve only got young kids themselves but it must be that the step kids are fat greedy excessive eaters.

safariboot · 02/06/2019 10:57

Sounds about the rate I drink it at.

But yes, running it out and not letting you know was crap.

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 02/06/2019 11:01

I'm just me and 12 year old DS have cows milk and we go through 8 pints a week.

I can easily see that they could go through 4 pints a day without being told to rein it in.

Do they drink straight from the carton? I bet they do - even if you don't see it.

Tell them to rein it in, it's too much.

AnneLovesGilbert · 02/06/2019 11:05

Not leaving enough for your tea is shit.

About an hour ago we were all sitting having breakfast and DSS who’s 10 was about to top up his cereal bowl before asking if anyone needed the last bit of milk for coffee. We didn’t but he remembered to ask. No excuses for being selfish.

Jaxhog · 02/06/2019 11:05

Argh! So many people are missing the point. It isn't the AMOUNT of milk being drunk that's the problem, it's that they drink the last of the milk and don't REPLACE it. Using the last of the milk is always unacceptable.

I'd keep a couple of cartons of long life milk in my closet.

NataliaOsipova · 02/06/2019 11:06

I think you just need to buy more milk when they’re coming and, as others have suggested, keep a few cartons of UHT as spare. It’s very unwelcoming to limit the amount of tea a house guest can drink, let alone a family member. Fair enough to ask that people point out when they’re nearing the bottom of the bottle, but no more really. Plus, “extra” milk isn’t that expensive; not much more to buy 4 pints than 2, or 6 pints than 4.

Innersmellbow · 02/06/2019 11:08

It doesn't really matter who drinks more or less - but it would be helpful if you DH was aware of this and preplanned getting in more milk when his DC stay.

kateandme · 02/06/2019 11:09

BottleOfJameson · 02/06/2019 11:09

Surely the only issue is that they finished the carton and didn't replace it? Detailing how much milk they get through and how often they have a cup of tea comes across as incredibly tight fisted. Just get extra milk in when they're round and insist that one of them pops to the shop when they finish the carton.

Pharlapwasthebest · 02/06/2019 11:10

YABU about the amount of milk they can use, that’s up to them surely?
We get thru 3 x 4 pints per week (4 of us), but YADNBU about coming down to no milk in the morning, I would hit the roof.

CheeseToastieAndABrew · 02/06/2019 11:11

How old are your husband's teenagers?

Welcome to teenager land, I've got 3, they eat cereals for fun.

My honest opinion is just buy more milk when they come, you don't sound over invested in them, it's probably mutual. Get your husband to buy the extra for his teenagers perhaps? 🙄

floraloctopus · 02/06/2019 11:12

Our recycling bin tends to have 4-5 large milk cartons in it by the end of the week so YANBU.

Iamnotagoddess · 02/06/2019 11:14

I had three of my own teenagers - am well aware Smile

I am of the school of thought/parenting where you don’t help yourself to excessive amounts of anything. I was brought up by two people who were brought up in the war and it’s a really difficult ethos to change tbh.

And yes it’s the lack of regard for others that has pissed me off more.

The day I would grudge my children or in this case step children milk would be the day I would wear a big hat with Miser written on it.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 02/06/2019 11:16

We can easily get through 4 pints a day (2 adults one teen) and more when DD is home from uni.

YANBU to be cross that the last of it was used up though.

Iamnotagoddess · 02/06/2019 11:17

Seriously though it’s not just milk is it? It’s really sugary tea, which isn’t great for them.

OP posts:
AnneLovesGilbert · 02/06/2019 11:17

UHT is rank. I keep a freezer drawer full of frozen milk. Much better.

Isthisafreename · 02/06/2019 11:22

@Jaxhog - Argh! So many people are missing the point. It isn't the AMOUNT of milk being drunk that's the problem, it's that they drink the last of the milk and don't REPLACE it

I think the problem is the op didn't mention that detail until the second post and many people respond to the first post they read. I know I did, as the second one wasn't there when I first responded and i didn't notice it after that until people started up mention it.

I wouldn't be at all bothered by lack of milk to be honest. But that's because I hate milk Grin. However, I use yoghurt in my cereal, as does dd. Ds21 uses it to make smoothies when he is home. I finish off a tub, rinse it out and put it in recycling. I look in the fridge and see there are 3 more large rubs so I don't need to buy more yet. Except, each of these 3 tubs may only have one spoonful left as my "d"c feel put upon if they have to take yoghurt from more than one tub at a time so if there's only a small amount left, they open a new tub (they're really just avoiding the rinsing out bit). Now, that is annoying!

Ds21 is rarely here, dd is about to start leaving cert (A level equivalent) so I'm tip-toe'ing around her at the moment. That will stop in 3 weeks time though, when she's finished. I'm going to lock my yoghurt up in a padlocked box in the fridge. I recommend the op does the same with her milk.

Banhaha · 02/06/2019 11:26

It’s really sugary tea, which isn’t great for them. no it's not great but if their dad is aware and not bothered then there's not a lot you can do unfortunately.

plominoagain · 02/06/2019 11:29

I’d be aggravated to get up and find no milk, certainly . Not letting me know we were running low so I could resolve it ( nearest shop is a drive away and DC’s can’t ) would certainly annoy me. But we go through about 8 pints a day here , so I tend to buy in bulk and grab a bottle if we’re passing anyway .

HazelBite · 02/06/2019 11:33

Keep a bottle of BOB milk in the fridge its always got a long use by date, I use it as we don't drink huge amounts of milk, but we do entertain a lot so I have swiched over to it (tastes lovely) so having extra in the fridge does not bother me as I know it will not go off if not drunk quickly.
