AIBU pregnant & turned away from training

AIBU to be ticked off ? Please forgive me very pregnant and a little hormonally emotional- if there’s such a thing. So I have a seasonal job which requires me to attend a training session before I can commence the short term contract - training was today a Saturday- I was meant to be there at 10am a nice hotel - quite far from where I live got there 33 minutes late because I had a bad night- couldn’t get up on time - public transport on a Saturday in London isn’t the best either - nothing in confirmation email said if you’re late you will not be let in - got there after they ladies at the door “conferred” I was told can’t come in after lugging laptop etc all that way - I’ve done this job for years not particularly taxing, offered to make the time up at lunch - transport was quite expensive being London - now lost the contract as can’t do it without attending the training - just majorly annoyed at subtle pregnancy discrimination - need the money and really would not have been late on purpose - being on the underground there’s no contact number to ring whilst enroute.

It's not discrimination to not let you in if you're late

Drogosnextwife · 01/06/2019 11:50

I don't think it's anything to do with you being pregnant, more the fact you were late.

TSSDNCOP · 01/06/2019 11:51

Did you tell them you were pregnant?

Bad night is rough, but let’s be honest transport in London in Saturday needs thought and planning. There’s always work or big events going on.

Bugsymalonemumof2 · 01/06/2019 11:51

It's not discrimination. You were half an hour late. Plenty of pregnant women everyday manage to get to work and appointments on time. Don't be that pregnant person.

Xyzzzzz · 01/06/2019 11:53

It doesn’t sound like discrimination it sounds like it’s because you were late not that they saw you were pregnant and decided they didn’t need you. You’ve admitted you were late therefore, you are being unreasonable.

NerrSnerr · 01/06/2019 11:54

It's not pregnancy discrimination. You just didn't get up in time. I have a toddler that doesn't sleep, every night is a bad night but my husband and I still need to get up and go to work every day on time.

If pregnancy is making you too unwell to get to work on time then you need to get a fit note from your doctor stating what you are too unwell to do.

PurpleDaisies · 01/06/2019 11:54

Does being pregnant affect your ability to be on time? Confused

Lazypuppy · 01/06/2019 11:55

Nothing to do with your pregnancy, you were 30mins late!

TokyoSushi · 01/06/2019 11:55

Nothing to do with being pregnant and everything to do with being late...

PurpleDaisies · 01/06/2019 11:56

Crying discrimination when you were just late makes it worse for people who are genuinely discriminated against.

Passthecherrycoke · 01/06/2019 11:56

YANBU to be ticked off, I would be too. Being late happens. It sounds like a crappy job though- any chance of getting anything better?

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 01/06/2019 11:57

If you think public transport is difficult in London on any day, you would struggle living in not-London. I do sympathise though, it is a pain to trek all the way there to be turned away. Will you have issues at work now for not going?

Shoxfordian · 01/06/2019 11:57

It's not discrimination, you knew you needed to get up on time and you should have done

SnuggyBuggy · 01/06/2019 11:58

I don't see what being pregnant has to do with it. It sounds like you just couldn't be bothered to get there on time.

ILoveMaxiBondi · 01/06/2019 11:59

Subtle pregnancy discrimination? What utter rot. You were late. It was your own fault. Own it! Stop trying to pull out a discrimination card you have no legitimate claim to use!

itswinetime · 01/06/2019 11:59

Most training won't let you in that late is a liability issue. They aren't training you for personal growth and development it's because they need to you to have had that training in order to tick a box somewhere that covers them they told you the correct way. Missing 30mins gives you the opportunity to say you weren't told something or didn't know which defeats the point for the company. It's common practice. It's not discrimination.

Alexkate2468 · 01/06/2019 12:01

Sorry, you are totally U. Not getting up on time is a terrible excuse no matter what type of night you’ve had. I have bad nights with the kids all the time - I can’t just be late for work. Imagine if 30 kids were left to their own devices for half an hour or my lessons weren’t ready to teach because I didn’t get out of bed!!! Plus, it sounds like you know London and the transport issues so it was up to you to plan ahead. I usually have sympathy in these situations but I’m struggling here - possibly because it seems you think you should have been excused just because you’re pregnant...

Oysterbabe · 01/06/2019 12:01

It's not discrimination. Don't be a dick.

multiplemum3 · 01/06/2019 12:01

How did you even link that you were late to pregnancy discrimination? You said yourself you overslept and the transport was shit. Massive fucking reach there lol.

ComeTheFuck0nBridget · 01/06/2019 12:02

I can't believe you are suggesting they are discriminating against you for being pregnant. Lots of people have bad nights and manage to get up and to work on time every day, even with pregnancies or disabilities or other health conditions. YABVU.

BarbarianMum · 01/06/2019 12:02

public transport in London on a Saturday isn't the best either

Hollow laugh. Try the rest of the country love.

SecondTimeCharm · 01/06/2019 12:02

what everyone else said

OutInTheCountry · 01/06/2019 12:02

Sorry OP, that sucks but bad night or not you should have been on time or accept the consequences. It's a shame you couldn't talk them round or that they weren't more accommodating but that's the risk you took.

I hope you find something else.

LividLaughLove · 01/06/2019 12:03

Was it exam marking?

You can't do it without the training, they're always very clear on that.

kaytee87 · 01/06/2019 12:04

Is this a joke? It was nothing to do with you being pregnant. You were late!
People like you make a joke of actual pregnancy discrimination.
