Yes, even in a pissing wet west of Scotland.

The poor madrilenos who are having to put up with their beautiful central square being taken over by a crowd of chanting yobs. I'm sure individually, most football fans are decent blokes. But put a group of them together and they start chanting, whooping, "singing", clapping, pointing and jeering.

It's just AWFUL.

I prefer not to judge people as a homogenous mass. I find it largely lacking in intelligence.

How would you describe hundreds of people crowding together in the same place chanting the same thing?!

Virgil4 · 01/06/2019 11:14

What a judgmental thread this has turned into. You get bad behaved football fans in the same way as you get in other sports, music etc. Football has changed hugely, these aren’t the days of hooliganism, we’re talking small pockets of people that can’t contain their passion and it spills over the top. I’m not defending that kind of behaviour, but am offended that football fans in general are being accused of being louts, intent on causing trouble.

Here’s a perfect example of both Liverpool and Spurs fans singing passionately about their clubs, happily enjoying the atmosphere together.

I got on a late train the other weekend- loads of football fans. I cringed as a load of very drunk fans got on the same coach. Really so loud we couldn’t have a conversation. Then they start chanting- it was really very impressive! Harmonies and everything- little reminder to myself not to be so judgemental Smile

nomilknosugarplease · 01/06/2019 11:15

DD lives there. To quote a PP upthread it’s not actually very easy to avoid - she couldn’t get near her flat the other night due to stations being closed and pedestrians being diverted to walk different ways. But it’s just a bit of fun and the atmosphere is great so she doesn’t mind - after all it’s only one weekend!

iolaus · 01/06/2019 11:17

I enjoyed the atmosphere in Cardiff when it was Champion's league final weekend there

TheAngryLlama · 01/06/2019 11:17

I’m not sure the self-knowledge thing is going on there, WhiteDust. But nice try.

How ironic Grin

MissKittyBeaudelais

I agree. I think we’re a fucking disgrace, wherever we go. Have travelled a lot throughout Europe. Seeing “Brits” abroad makes me wonder why we have no control button in terms of alcohol/aggression/foul language. I bet they can’t wait til we “leave”.

You really don’t have any experience of European football fans do you misskitty? There are many many countries that have much worse football hooligans problems than the U.K.- where it’s all a bit 15 years ago Confused

GoFiguire · 01/06/2019 11:20

comedy fail?

Dad Dancing Fail. He’s got the Liverpool fans doing a conga round the bars now. And he’s asked me for €100 as he doesn’t carry cash, apparently.

SimulationTheorist · 01/06/2019 11:21

can’t contain their passion and it spills over the top

Hence the rise in domestic violence incidents on game days.

aweedropofsancerre · 01/06/2019 11:25

You do realise that madrid is home to two football teams with a mass fan base? You clearly haven’t been to Madrid when athletico and Real Madrid are playing. I was there when athletico won the league and it was amazing out in the streets with the squares filled with fans. This notion that the majority of football fans are yobbish thugs is nonsense. There is a minority who are and its those you see on the news. My DS is over in Madrid at the moment as he is going to the final and he is staying with his cousins in Madrid and there all having a ball!

Why doesn't this surprise me?

There was thread on here, might still be here, recently where a poster's partner's team lost and so refused to engage with her or his children all the next day, had a face like a smacked arse and had to leave the house due to the trauma. Give me a fucking break.

Yabbers · 01/06/2019 11:39

And judgy and snobby.
Is it really snobby to not want to be in an area full or drunk, loud, chanting men?

If they love it, good for them. If you do, that’s great too. I’d rather be stuck with hot pins than be there. Does that make me a snob? I wouldn’t have thought so, I just don’t like big, loud, drunken crowds.

lucymegan · 01/06/2019 11:53

I'm not the biggest fan of football but dh is a Liverpool fan and was running around the house singing and chanting this morning. It's a super exciting game! I'm buzzing for him 🤪 let loose op.. get a little crazy!

ShagMeRiggins · 01/06/2019 12:03

You’d be a meme within seconds.

ilovesooty · 01/06/2019 14:56

Not a football fan of any description

No shit Sherlock Grin

Kazzyhoward · 01/06/2019 15:00

I hate anywhere that's crowded with huge numbers of people whether it's for a football match, carnival, pop concert, visit of the Queen, or whatever.

WhiteDust · 01/06/2019 18:02

I love the fact that people are 'in Madrid' right now and Mumsnetting. Must be having a ball! GrinFootballGrin

aweedropofsancerre · 01/06/2019 18:43

It looks amazing over there. My relatives sent me a 16 minute video of the liverpool fans singing. They are loving it.

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 01/06/2019 18:46

Please don't feel sorry for me. I have grown up hobbies that don't involve drunkeness, violence and smashing things up.

I love my football. I'm TT and wouldn't dream of being violent to anyone nor smashing things up Shock

TheAverageJuror · 01/06/2019 19:15

Inconsiderate, parking wherever tf they want, loud and often rude, leaving rubbish on a street....

You all just described most parents at school drop off and pic up times😂 i am pretty confident there is few drunk ones in that mix too...

TheAverageJuror · 01/06/2019 19:16

Liverpool is buzzing. You can just feel it in the air even away from crowds. Awesome

HollySniffs · 01/06/2019 19:18

That would be about 16 mins too long for me aweedrop.

I wouldn't let my fervoured relatives know that though, of course Grin.

WhiteRedRose · 01/06/2019 19:19

@DonkeyHohtay that is exactly how your husband would be acting if he was there, I promise you 🤣

Never been to a match, love, no? Give over. And get over yourself.

WhiteRedRose · 01/06/2019 19:22

@TheAverageJuror I'm down in the Swan and the atmosphere is so surreal. All the neighbours are reds (we're blues) and the streets are silent, can hear the tvs on through the garden/yard doors.

Loads of loons still racing down the empty roads though to get home/the pub/wherever.
