Did you take ovulation tests or just leave it to chance?
What lifestyle changes did you make and how did you stay positive when getting negative test results?
I’m 29 and we’ve only been trying for a couple of months but I’m (a little prematurely I know) starting to panic that I might be infertile or that dh might be.

OP posts:

Almost 3 and a half years. Low ovarian reserve. Decided not to have fertility treatment. Then it happened, completely out of the blue.

tor8181 · 31/05/2019 18:22

im not a normal case as i have sever PCOS and never had a period ever and im 38, was also told i was infertile at 17

ive been with the same partner since i was 18,him 17 so we have never used contraception at all as we are each others only sexual partner and as i though it was infertile it wasnt needed

it took 5 years of unprotected sex for no1,had him at 23

with no2 i had him at 30 after 4 years of fertility treatment using the highest strength clomid tablets,i wasnt eligible for ivf or iu as i had a natural pregnancy and live baby with the same man already(i did kick off about this as if i was with another man they would have given me it)

ive always been teetotal so never needed to give up and ive never smoked and ive never had a bad diet and ive always been big weight wise

from the time we discussed children(i was 20)i was on pre conception tablets and then pregnancy tablets till the end

ive never used ovulation tests as i dont ovulate but i was having fortnightly scans to see if i was producing any eggs or multiples and it was always a no even though i was on tablets to make me ovulate

i then had to take a pregnancy test monthly, just before i started next months tablets just in cause i was pregnant, this went on for 4 years

i found out at 2 and half weeks on a 3 for a pound test so the cheap ones do work

LynseyLou1982 · 31/05/2019 18:30

I was 34 and DP was 33 and we did it on the 1st go. No lifestyle changes.

dayswithaY · 31/05/2019 18:32

My three children were all conceived first month we tried. With my fourth I was actively trying NOT to get pregnant by using the Predictor machine thing where you take your temperature every day etc. Established that I ovulate on day 20, had sex on day 14. Who knew sperm lived for 6 days? Obviously not me. Never expected to conceive so easily as I had anorexia in my teens. Good luck, try not to focus on the end goal too much, easy to say I know.

velveteenwabbit · 31/05/2019 18:33

Six months to conceive first pregnancy which ended in a MMC. Had two chemical pregnancies after that on successive cycles. Three cycles after that conceived DD.

RoyalChocolat · 31/05/2019 18:33

DC1 (aged 25) : accident surprise
DC2 (aged 28) : 3rd cycle
DC3 (aged 31) : 1st cycle
DC4 (aged 36) : accident (miscarried)
DC5 (aged 36) : 2nd cycle after MC

Ifartglitterybaubles · 31/05/2019 18:35

First dc I used an ovulation kit and caught pregnant on the first 'positive'. Second dc I was pregnant within a month of stopping contraception. Our third and final 'unplanned' dc was after a contraception failure. I'm now sterilised.

Ifartglitterybaubles · 31/05/2019 18:37

I was 32 when we decided to start trying. I was 38 when I had my last baby.

IntoValhalla · 31/05/2019 18:39

With DC1 I was 19, newly married and I had my implant removed with the idea that we’d start actively “trying” - ie tracking ovulation and cycles etc once my body had got back into a normal pattern. I was pregnant the month my implant was removed. I put that down to the fact that I was in my late teens - at peak fertility I guess.
DC2 was another quick one - had a second implant removed as it was causing me absolutely hell with side effects that time around. Had it removed and got a positive test about 8 weeks later.
I stopped using all forms of hormonal contraception after he was born and did meticulous cycle tracking and condoms during fertile windows. This worked well for 2 and a half years with no slip ups. Then I got absolutely spangled at Christmas (slow gin mixed with Prosecco is absolutely beautiful if anyone was wondering Grin), and one forgotten condom resulted in DC3 who is due in early autumn Blush

IntoValhalla · 31/05/2019 18:40

Sorry forgot to say how old I was Blush

  • 19 with DC1
  • 21 with DC2
  • 24 with DC3
tomtom1999xx · 31/05/2019 18:45

4 dc - all conceived within 6 months. ( age 22 to 36 )

tomtom1999xx · 31/05/2019 18:48

And left it to chance.

LovelyJubblee · 31/05/2019 18:49

Came off pill. Had one period 28 days later. 10.5 months later gave birth. So I guess that's about 6 weeks! Been on pill for 14 years as well. I was told would take ages too.

Haven't risked anything at all since as I think all DH has to do is pop trousers over end of bed and have unprotected sex and I would be pregnant! Although 13 years on would hope fertility is now waning.

Walkingthere · 31/05/2019 18:50

Sorry to hear about other posters difficulties and losses on this thread Flowers
We were very lucky, irregular periods yet conceived quickly:
DC1 age 36: 2nd month
DC2 age 38: 1st month

CoraPirbright · 31/05/2019 18:50

Kid 1 - age 31 - just over a year
Kid 2 - age 34 - just under a year

I have always had rather wayward periods and it now seems that I ovulate only rarely. You are young yet but you are your own worst enemy if you are fretting at 2 months of trying. You HAVE to relax otherwise it is much much harder ime. I ate more healthily, took folic acid, tracked my ovulation patterns and fretted terribly. Should have got slightly tipsy and just bonked as and when. Would have worked much better. Stress is the enemy!!

LovelyJubblee · 31/05/2019 18:52

We DTD every three days. Not sure why but I must have read something at the time. When did test I was 5.5 weeks pregnant. Was 32 years old.

Fluffymullet · 31/05/2019 18:55

First month off contraceptives with dc1, early thirties, very surprised as I have irregular periods (likely pcos) so was gearing up for a long wait. Pretty much first month with DC 2 also, although periods took over a year to return post first baby so we would have struggled had we wanted a smaller age gap. I also assumed it would take a long time as DH patents took years and years to conceive him and sibling.

I started to get more aware of my bodies fertility signs after discussion with a friend just before we stopped using condoms and I think that tuned me in more to signs of ovulation etc. It is the absolute luck of the draw I think. Good luck to all trying x

MyBabyBoyBlue · 31/05/2019 19:57

Took us 6 months to conceive our DS. I found out I was pregnant two weeks after my first appointment with a fertility specialist (I have PCOS) at which they told me I would struggle to conceive naturally! We would like more in the future but the PCOS does tend to flare up so I dont know if we will be so lucky again.

cptartapp · 31/05/2019 19:58

Left it to chance.
3rd month with DC1 aged 29.
1st month with DC2 aged 32.

December2019 · 31/05/2019 20:02

With my son it took 7 years to fall pregnant
And with this pregnancy it was the first time we had sex since the birth of my little boy... I'm actually due on his 1st birthday

PeachTartLemon · 31/05/2019 20:04

First shag trying for dc1 & 2nd month trying for dc2 at the ages of 27 & 29. I did calculate when my likely fertile days were & planned it around that. I can't imagine waiting 6 months or even years like some people have had to.

soundsystem · 31/05/2019 20:06

DC1 4 months, didn't do anything other than have sex a lot (easy with no DC!)

Pregnancy 2 10 months. Used the clear blue things with the smiley faces.

DC2 first month of trying, but this was following a miscarriage

DC3 We had sex once. That was a bit of a shock. It was planned, in the sense that we had agreed we'd like DC3 at some point, and so stopped using contraception but we weren't actively trying and expected it to take a bit longer!

boomboom1234 · 31/05/2019 20:07

Two weeks from coming off the pill first time and same speed second time although I wasn't on pill in between. Aged 33 and 35 years at the time.

Emotionalfuckwittake2 · 31/05/2019 20:07

6 years and a failed IVF for number 1,
6 months for number 2 Smile

VisionsofJohanna · 31/05/2019 20:07

1st pregnancy (age 30): 1st cycle, MMC 12 weeks
DS (age 31): 3rd cycle
2nd pregnancy (age 32): 2nd cycle. Miscarriage 6 weeks
3rd pregnancy (age 32): no cycle - straight after miscarriage 2. MMC 8 weeks

I seem to get pregnant very easily but sticky ones are another matter. Good luck OP, hope this is reassuring you in terms of huge range of timeframes and all eventual successful pregnancies
