To not feel happy with gender neutral toilets at work?

BalletBunting · 30/05/2019 13:01

My company has recently relabelled all toilets on my floor as 'gender neutral'. As well as being rather confused as to what the need is for them (there are no trans people at my work as far as I'm aware) I don't like them, and I would prefer to keep the ladies loo as is. The nearest women's toilets is 3 floors up now!

I don't really feel comfortable going to the loo knowing that there are men in there but I don't really know how to bring this up and with who. I work for a large media company, fairly young/progressive and I don't want to cause trouble for myself.

There was also absolutely no consultation regarding the change. If anyone has been in a similar situation and managed to come to a different solution? Or AIBU and should drop it?

And you are all missing the point - you don’t get to decide what is a major issue for all of womankind. You don’t mind mixed toilets? Fine, go share with the men, but leave single sex facilities for those that do.

Also, if it’s not a major issue sharing with men then why is it a major issue only sharing with women?

GreytExpectations · 30/05/2019 22:17

And you are all missing the point - you don’t get to decide what is a major issue for all of womankind.

Nobody is saying that though. We are giving our opinions as requested by the OP when they posted this thread. Just because some of us dont agree with others it doesnt me we arent allowed to voice it

ArabellaDoreenFig · 30/05/2019 22:18

I’m not here to do your reading for you!

FangsTasticBeast · 30/05/2019 22:19

I’ve never worked anywhere that had separate male/female toilets

Never had a problem with them being smelly or covered in piss

GreytExpectations · 30/05/2019 22:20

@ArabellaDoreenFig its not about doing reading for us. Its about posting bold statements with no supporting evidence and then when challenged refusing to give it. If you have an opinion than thats fine but you can't suggest your opinion is a fact without proof- thats not how debate works.

Helmetbymidnight · 30/05/2019 22:22

the status quo is separate sex toilets.

the onus is on those demanding change - to give their reasons why we should change.

bizarrely, you and boo have admitted there are no good reasons to change.

for some women however, there are very compelling reasons not to change. and yup, it is a fucking major issue.

so you and boo dont care either way - but plenty of women do, do you get that?

why then should there be a change?

NewarkShark · 30/05/2019 22:24

If you don’t think it’s a major issue, but recognise for some women it really is a major issue, then out of empathy for them you surely want a good reason to change it?

mannersmakeththepig · 30/05/2019 22:25

@arabelladoreenfig

Well here’s an actual scientific study that found no increased risk from gender neutral bathrooms.

I did the google you suggested and couldn’t find anything to support the notion that it puts people in greater danger.

GreytExpectations · 30/05/2019 22:25

Honestly Helmetbymidnight ive repeated my points a few times and you just arent getting it so i suggest you go back and read them because its not worth my time to continue to go around in circles with you on this. You keep obsessing over good or bad idea and thats not the point im making.

boobirdblue · 30/05/2019 22:25

@ArabellaDoreenFig an you link the reported facts please?

GreytExpectations · 30/05/2019 22:27

@boobirdblue didnt you hear? She isnt here to "do our reading for us" aka she doesnt actually have any reported facts Hmm

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 30/05/2019 22:31

Or

As its only been 9 minutes

She might be doing something else

Like having a piss

I wouldn’t mind sharing an individual toilet with men, but not a cubicled set of toilets.
Eg if it was my totm and I needed to change, I wouldn’t be comfortable doing that if there was a bloke there!
Do you have an approachable manager or a head office that you could speak to regarding it?

Helmetbymidnight · 30/05/2019 22:40

i know of two studies that shows unisex changing facilities are considerably more dangerous to women. the sunday times one and the american target one. i dont know if any have been done on loos. perhaps people could link either way?

i do appreciate this is not a fucking major issue to you boo and greyt.

men are responsible for the vast majority of sex and violent assaults against women - there are several documented attacks in bathrooms and also voyeurism but, womens fears about their vulnerabilities in mixed sex loos should be over-ridden just ...because....because its not major issue to some posters.

Helmetbymidnight · 30/05/2019 22:43

repeated my points a few times and you just arent getting it

oh i get it.

Loftyswops988 · 30/05/2019 22:48

I see a lot of threads like this. At my work we only have one staff toilet so we share it men and women and I've never really thought about it before. If the cubicles are ceiling to floor the only thing I can think is a downside is piss on the seats/floor.

Is it likely that there will be a divide between them naturally? Like the ones that were previously the ladies still be used by women and the same for the mens?

Helmetbymidnight · 30/05/2019 22:50

whatever you do, dont google mixed sex bathrooms and voyeurism.

fml. who knew?

i appreciate that for some people this isnt an issue...

mannersmakeththepig · 30/05/2019 22:54

Changing room in a public swimming pool, where anyone can enter is not the same as toilet at work, and nor does that FOI request data suggest that there has been an increase in sexual assaults since making them gender neutral.

What it says is that more attacks happened in GN changing rooms (again, not toilets) than in single sex ones. Not that more attacks happened overall since they became GN. Do you understand the difference?

What you suggested with your unsubstantiated assertion was that GN toilets would increase the number of sexual assaults. So try again to find some evidence to support that, or, you know, don’t pass it off as fact.

I’ve also learned that search terms have to be chosen carefully!

Just reinforces everything that is said over in FWR to be honest !

mannersmakeththepig · 30/05/2019 22:57

Oh, and anonymous blog on a pro female only space website also isn’t evidence that GN toilets increase sex attacks. It’s an opinion piece, that raises some interesting points, but still, not going to stand up to peer review.

ScottishDoll · 30/05/2019 22:57

Well that name choice is certainly appropriate.

Still no good reason for mixed sex toilets then?

Walkingdeadfangirl · 30/05/2019 22:58

Men and women are equal, why do people still want to return to sex segregated spaces for gossip and makeup? A cubicle is entirely private. Maybe we should have toilets segregated by race, religion, age and everything else!

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 30/05/2019 22:58

scottish I’ve been thinking that all day
