To move to Scotland because of Brexit?

Fucksandflowers · 26/05/2019 17:28

DH is seriously talking about it.

We’ve always liked Scotland anyway...

DH is English, but looks foreign and gets an astounding amount of racism, at least weekly.

Genuinely fearful of the apparent growth of right wing politics in this country, DH in particular is worried if Farage gets in the racism is going to get even worse.

Anyone who lives in Scotland, what is it like?
Are people generally tolerant?
Any areas that are particularly nice and too expensive?

NOT too expensive

OP posts:
Cherylshaw · 26/05/2019 17:31

I don't get how moving to Scotland would be any different, am I missing something?

Ivegotthree · 26/05/2019 17:31

This is a joke right?

Harriethen · 26/05/2019 17:34

You’ll get an outstanding amount of shit for being English up there. I lived there for years (Glasgow and surrounding areas, and Aberdeen and surrounding areas) and both my husband and I got it regularly. I have to say that on all occasions we were doing literally nothing other than chatting between ourselves in our English accents. He is Scottish but sounds English, and I am English.

AdamAntsCrackpotHistory · 26/05/2019 17:34

Confused of Mumsnet. Why Scotland? What difference would it make? I sympathise if you've had ill feeling towards you and dh but everywhere is generally similar in the UK. If you want (positive) change, do it from within and don't let the bastards run you out.

Plump82 · 26/05/2019 17:34

Ive never experienced racism but that's because im white so i cant comment on it but im not blinkered enough to think it doesnt happen.
I live in North Lanarkshire so easy to get to Glasgow for work but also easy to travel east. House prices are generally much cheaper out this way. I live in a converted Georgian house and we paid at least £40k less than where we were looking in the East End of Glasgow. South Side and West End are even more expensive. Council tax doesnt break the bank out this way either.
Id say Scotlands a pretty good place to live, ive never seriously considered living else where and on the whole we're a friendly bunch!

ludothedog · 26/05/2019 17:36

In the cities you will be fine - especially Edinburgh. However Scotland will suffer from Brexit like the rest of the UK. Scotland has it's share of racist numpties too though.

BogglesGoggles · 26/05/2019 17:37

Where do you live now? What do you actually mean when you say racism? About half of native English people I’ve met do the whole harmless racism thing (no where are you actually from?) but I’ve never met someone that was properly racist. It might just be the area you are in maybe?

Fucksandflowers · 26/05/2019 17:38

Well, this looks like it’s going to go well!

Sturgeon’s views are more closely in line with ours, Farage does not represent us and polls suggest he may do very well.

My DH isn’t the only one who has noticed a rise in racism since the Brexit shitstorm started.

Asfaik Scotland voted strongly for remain and Sturgeon has apparently asked if Scotland can apply to be members of the EU so they would be separate from the rest of the UK if the no deal leave goes ahead.

OP posts:
MorrisZapp · 26/05/2019 17:38

We are exiting the EU as the UK. Scotland will be leaving /staying along with the rest of the country.

As far as areas with no prejudice go, well you know the answer don't you. There are ignorant arseholes everywhere, in cities, towns, villages and remote locations.

Scotland has much to commend it but don't choose it in the hope of leaving idiots behind. Choose it for positive reasons!

TeacupDrama · 26/05/2019 17:39

there are far fewer people of different nationalities in Scotland, some parts of Scotland are very intolerant of incomers often English people being referred to as white settlers, especially those who sell down South and then overbid on houses up here marveling that you can get 3 beds for under £150K and pushing locals out
apart from Edinburgh property is generally cheaper
Scotland is still likely to return 1 brexit MEP
it is highly unlikely that Scotland can enter EU on present UK terms
the economy would need adjustment to met EU criteria which may mean some austerity measures
there is no real appetite for another referendum whatever SNP say
if Brexit is hard Scotxit will be harder and rUK will have the upper hand in negotiations just as we are dealing with EU from a minority position so will Scotland be, a no deal exit from UK would be a bigger disaster than a no deal brexit
it might not make a difference to you but higher rate tax is higher and starts at a lower figure than in rUK

Celebelly · 26/05/2019 17:40

@Harriethen That's interesting as my DP's experience is totally different. He's lived here for seven years (Aberdeen area) and never had one negative comment. Some banter sometimes, but nothing genuinely unpleasant. There are plenty of English people in this part of the country and in Scotland in general. My Mum has an English accent although is Scottish and no one has ever said anything to her either (entire life in Glasgow area). Very odd!

I think the OP isn't saying she wants to move to Scotland to avoid Brexit but because she thinks politics in England is becoming increasingly right wing and intolerant. Tbh I agree with her, but people will get very upset on this thread at the suggestion of that and will claim that all of Britain is the same. A quick look at the map on election nights will show that is very clearly isn't.

StinkyWizleteets · 26/05/2019 17:46

My very anti independence mil has sold up down south and is heading north to campaign for independence. Also has some deluded idea of saving Scottish Labour 😂

I can’t say I’ve experienced any racism in Scotland/Glasgow for being English. Of course there are plenty of people who don’t like the English in Scotland but we’ve received far worse visiting down south as a family with Scottish accents.

Veterinari · 26/05/2019 17:51

I’ve never experienced negativity in Scotland for being English. Neither have any of my English or European friends.
In fact after The referendum my European friends in Scotland all received a letter from their local MP telling them that they were a valued and welcome part of the Scottish community.

There's No chance i’d Ever live in England again

PicsInRed · 26/05/2019 17:51

The Scottish talk of tolerance is much greater than the actual tolerance.

Look beyond the PR and be realistic.

Justanotherlurker · 26/05/2019 17:55

The Scottish talk of tolerance is much greater than the actual tolerance.

Yup, this. It isn't the utopia that it is so often portrayed on MN, it is only narrowly remain for one thing, less immigration, generally the same polls giver or take as the Britain wrt Immigration etc etc.

EustaciaPieface · 26/05/2019 17:56

My husband is English and has lived with me in Glasgow since 1997. He’s never had one bad word said against him because of his accent etc. He loves it here. The government here does seem to be more socially progressive. By the way, I went to uni in England and got quite a lot of shit for being Scottish.

GreyofSunshine · 26/05/2019 17:57

Statistically I don't think Scotland is less racist than the rest of the UK. I'd guess the reason Remain won so comprehensively there is more to do with fewer Scots buying into specifically British nationalism.

GreyofSunshine · 26/05/2019 18:02

@Justanotherlurker

I wouldn't call a 24% margin of victory 'narrow'.

MrsMozartMkII · 26/05/2019 18:02

I've not had any hassle when in Scotland. I'm English with Scottish (and Welsh) heritage, but the Scots aren't to know that and have always been very friendly.

wigglybeezer · 26/05/2019 18:09

It could be out of the frying pan into the fire; things got a bit heated during insured and are likely to start up again if indyref2 looks likely.
Also, social attitude surveys show that Scotland is not really a more tolerant place on the ground, it hardly differs from England at all, our politicians just have good sales patter.

Bubbilish · 26/05/2019 18:11

I live just outside Glasgow. I have many friends who are not Scottish, some are English. I have never heard any of them say they have had problems with racism. But I have had neighbours who are very racist and my son says there is racism at school. So I think there probably are problems here that I don't see.

krustykittens · 26/05/2019 18:14

We moved to Scotland from England because of Brexit. As soon as the bloody referendum was announced, we started getting shite for being Irish. We moved up here and are left alone. I will never live in England again, I am afraid, we are here to stay. Every country has racist arse holes but the mood changes wholesale when you have a hostile government, which in my opinion England has and Scotland doesn't.

Erosisaprick · 26/05/2019 18:14

As an immigrant who has lived in both England and Scotland, I find Scots far more welcoming, down to earth and tolerant than the English.

InTheHeatofLisbon · 26/05/2019 18:19

I'm in North Lanarkshire too where you get a ridiculous amount of house/land for your money.

There's a saying among Indy supporters whenever someone suggests they move to Scotland, come on up, the kettle's on!

Oh and with regards to immigration, the LA who has had the most immigrants per capita in the UK (and refugees) is Glasgow city council.

Yes you'll get dickheads everywhere you go, Scotland or otherwise (that bullshit happens in England when you're a Scot by the way, I lived it!) but generally there isn't anti English feeling up here. It's a nice wee PR tool used to make the Indy movement look anti English when it isn't. It's anti Westminster which isn't the same thing.

Isn't it ironic that the apparent anti English sentiment in Scotland (which I've never seen, neither have my numerous English friends!) is attacked, yet the consistent sneering at Scots on here goes unnoticed?
