To wonder how people think a new Prime Minister is going to be able to deliver Brexit

Bearbehind · 25/05/2019 11:12

I’m no fan of Theresa May; the reason we are in the mess we currently are is because of her red lines and the fact she has never been honest about what was and was not achievable.

But what do people think a new PM can achieve?

No deal will seriously damage the country, even the government’s own impact assessments have concluded that and there’s simply not the numbers in parliament for no cal to happen (even though it’s the default position)

The EU aren’t suddenly going to remove the backstop for a new PM because we’ve proven we cannot be trusted to do what we say so it’s needed.

I think it will be just leaving with no deal.

If we can’t reach an agreement on leaving we will leave with no deal.

Brexit will be delivered.

hidinginthenightgarden · 25/05/2019 11:26

No I don't.
I think it will be a no deal.

AlexaShutUp · 25/05/2019 11:29

I think we'll end up with a no deal exit. It's fucking terrifying.

Stillpinching · 25/05/2019 11:32

We surely must revoke now. This can't go on and we can't end up with a damaging no deal on the say so of a tiny group of people. Bullshit is this democracy. A state of national emergency should be declared and article 50 be revoked.

HollowTalk · 25/05/2019 11:34

The idea of both no-deal AND Boris as PM is absolutely terrifying.

Theghosttrain · 25/05/2019 11:36

I'd like to see someone with proven diplomatic skills get the job eg someone like Rory Stewart. However, the fact he has a look of 'Tory boy' about him, despite some solid credentials in the real world, will probably mean he has no chance. The pool of candidates is dire but if pushed, I'd pick him over the rest of the bunch of chancers.

AwdBovril · 25/05/2019 11:36

YANBU OP. It's all unicorns again.

Isthisnecessary · 25/05/2019 11:36

Part of me thinks it's just another delay tactic.

LadyRannaldini · 25/05/2019 11:38

It will be No Deal, it will be a disaster, hopefully those who voted for it come out worst. No-one has ever said how it could be delivered successfully, especially the liars of the bus.

Bearbehind · 25/05/2019 11:45

I genuinely don’t believe no deal will happen; it could have happened twice already and it didn’t because, deep down, parliament knows it will be a disaster.

Part of me wants it to happen because it is literally the only way to prove Project Fear is Project Reality.

I don't think any deal will get through HoC so will either go to No Deal or Remain or just delayed for years longer. If Boris gets in maybe No Deal.

ScreamingValenta · 25/05/2019 11:55

I don't think they will.

I don't blame TM for her failure - it was an impossible task.

araiwa · 25/05/2019 11:56

No deal is impossible

Northern ireland border issue cant be solved

Ringdonna · 25/05/2019 11:59

Doomed! Doomed! We are all doomed! FFS......

AlexaShutUp · 25/05/2019 12:01

I'm not convinced that it was impossible. Parliament voted to trigger Article 50 after all, so there was a general acceptance that Brexit had to happen, even though it was a bad idea.

May's big mistake was that she failed to capitalise on that general acceptance. She charged ahead with her own version of Brexit, drawing all those ill-advised red lines right at the outset, without considering the potential consequences of that approach. What she should have done instead was to have a constructive dialogue with MPs from all parties to try to reach a consensus. Unfortunately, it was too late when she finally realised that she needed their support.

Bearbehind · 25/05/2019 12:11

Absolutely alexa. TM made it impossible by promising things that could not be achieved.

We can leave with no deal but we’ll all be worse off by doing so.

If people know and understand that and still want to do it then that’s one thing, but it’s very different to thinking things will stay the same / get better.

I’m not sure many people actually voted to make their lives harder.

Northern ireland border issue cant be solved

But Oeavers still refuse to acknowledge that.

Only last week I was speaking to a Leaver who insisted that as we don’t want a border and the EU don’t want a border, we don’t need one.

It just would not sink in that the only way that was possible would be for both us and the EU to offer the same trading terms to the rest of the world under WTO rules, and that that will not happen.

I like Rory Stewart too but Boris is the Tory faithful favourite sadly.

JustSomebodie · 25/05/2019 12:15

Sadly, we won’t be leaving.

Alsohuman · 25/05/2019 12:22

If I were PM the first thing I’d do is ask the EU for an extension of at least a year. Then I’d set up a cross party group with a completely blank sheet of paper. Thrash out a deal by consensus, get it through Parliament then take it back to the EU with a proper, experienced negotiating team. And I’d start by saying the default if all this fails is revoke.

OublietteBravo · 25/05/2019 12:31

Boris is a showboater. He might just have the chutzpah to threaten no deal, and then do a complete u-turn, revoke A.50 and spin it as him ‘saving the day.’

Of the leadership candidates who’ve thrown their hat in so far, Rory Stewart at least seems to have grasped that the WA has to be signed in order to leave. And that it cannot be renegotiated (although the ‘flavour’ of Brexit in the PD can be changed).

Leighhalfpennysthigh · 25/05/2019 12:32

Boris gets in maybe No Deal.

Boris is well know for bullshitting and lying and he was shit scared when leave won the referendum. He knows he can't deliver. No one can deliver it because it's all a fucking stupid idea.

If it's no deal then yes, I want the wankers who voted for this clusterfuck to suffer the most.

Dongdingdong · 25/05/2019 12:36

I think this could happen too. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I reckon I'd begrudgingly, almost, just about be prepared to put up with Boris as PM if this were to be the case. The end justifies the means and all that...

Thinkinghappythoughts · 25/05/2019 12:37

Two things: Firstly Boris is the favourite but the Tories are ruthless. I wouldn't be surprised if they recognized how hated he is by other MPs and toxic he could be to voters they went with someone else.

Secondly, here is a good article from ian dunt about how Brexit will devour the next PM too: www.politics.co.uk/blogs/2019/05/23/this-prime-minister-was-destroyed-by-brexit-and-the-next-one

I don't understand why all these MPs are going for PM now. If it was a poison chalice in 2016, it is even worse now. Do they think this will be their last chance? Do they think they are the only ones to save the Tory party from the brink? How do their minds work?

Dongdingdong · 25/05/2019 12:39

Actually I take it back. Boris is awful!
