To think this isn't a compliment?

To be told regularly and often that you look 17/18 at the age of 34.

OP posts:
lilabet2 · 24/05/2019 16:48

I guess it's not in that people might take you less seriously if you look like a teenager but most people are so desperate to look younger that they'd definitely take it as a compliment and expect you to be pleased if they mentioned it!

I'm early 30s and I think I look a bit older so I'd love to look 17/18!

sunshineandshowers21 · 24/05/2019 16:49

my mum is only 16 years older than me and looks younger than her age, and when we were last out on a night out together someone asked if we were twins. she was chuffed, i was fuming! 😂

cookiechomper · 24/05/2019 16:50

Gabsalot, because it's pretty obvious . They look like me and they're often shouting " mum" anyway.
I think in most cases when you see a woman pushing a pram with a gang of kids, it's safe to assume that's probably their mother. I don't look like a kid and I wouldn't want to. I'm a grown woman with a family.

GPatz · 24/05/2019 16:51

Somehow the 'dont worry about it' got lost in my last post.

Vulpine · 24/05/2019 16:51

Surely it's about the intention behind the 'compliment'. No offense is meant.

caughtinanet · 24/05/2019 16:53

I could be wrong but I'd be willing to bet that no one thinks they are insulting you when they say you look young.

It's either an observation or a compliment, obviously it's annoying you which is a valid reaction but doesn't affect the thought behind it.

Di11y · 24/05/2019 16:55

I get this too and it's ok sometimes, but in work context I feel has held me back. people just can't 'see' young little me in positions of authority. even though I have over 10 years experience.

Itsnotmesothere · 24/05/2019 16:56

I used to get mistaken for younger regularly then I had a child. I'm not yet 30 and I feel joyful if I get ID'd which is getting rarer and rarer. Currently every two to three months. To think I used to get pissed off at being ID'd. I'm worried I look worn and like I've had my day. Enjoy it, you wouldn't want to be told the alternative.

EleanorAbernathy · 24/05/2019 16:59

I get it OP - I'm 40 but no-one ever believes me (I've been told "but you look about 12!") many a time, I'm certainly not particularly attractive!

A nurse came to take my blood yesterday and had to double check I was the right person as I did look old enough to be the 40 year old she was expecting.

When people find out my actual age it frequently leads to them calling over a few other people in shock, saying "How old do you think Eleanor is?"

I was at a festival earlier this year and a man said to me "I can't help noticing you're a lot younger than everybody else here" and started explaining the history of all the bands to me then didn't believe me when I told him I'd seen them the first time round! Grin Then DH turned up, he's only two years older than me but he's always being accused of having a much younger wife!

Last week my mum was taling a photo of me to show her sister what I look like these days and she wanted to do it again because my forehead looked to wrinkly- I was secretly pleased as it's something that might make me look older - but then last night I was asked for ID whilst buying DH's beer and the cashier was looking at me and my driving licence for ages as though she didn't believe it was me......

So now I'm trying to cultivate my forehead wrinkles a bit more. Grin

Sparklfairy · 24/05/2019 17:02

GPatz-Better to be sarcastic cunt than a nasty cunt.

It's not nasty to call out pure jealousy.

Jaxhog · 24/05/2019 17:03

I got charged child's fair on the bus until I was 30, and had my ID refused for buying beer at a beer game (in the US) when I was 36.

Ah, those were the days.

Jaxhog · 24/05/2019 17:03

Ball game!!

tinkerbellla · 24/05/2019 17:05

Hell yes it's a compliment! Unless you want wine and have no ID

EatShitBoswell · 24/05/2019 17:05

Are you always such a sarcastic cunt?

I'm slim and early 30s and get ID'ed and told how young I look all the time. I make no apologies for it. If you're fat and old looking you don't have to be a bitch about it on this thread.

Fuck me @Sparklfairy I'm wondering whether you actually look as young as you think. Maybe people mistake you for a teenager because of your attitude and behaviour? 🤔

Sparklfairy · 24/05/2019 17:11

EatShitBoswell quite possibly!

I just can't stand fat and old looking keyboard warriors trying to wreck OP's self esteem when it already seems quite low. She shouldn't have to apologise but somehow she's been bullied into apologising anyway. Sort yourselves out before you start attacking others.

purplegirdles · 24/05/2019 17:12

"I'm worried I look worn and like I've had my day"

It's awful how women are sucked into thinking they are worth so much less if they don't look young.

Mammylamb · 24/05/2019 17:13

As someone who looked 44 at 34, yabvvvu

MaxNormal · 24/05/2019 17:13

Sparklfairy how on earth do you know the age and size of everyone posting? And what's your rather unpleasant obsession with "fat and old"?
Seriously people are only jealous of you in your own mind, we don't have a clue what you look like.

neveradullmoment99 · 24/05/2019 17:13

I am 51 and someone said they thought I was in my 30's. I was delighted!

neveradullmoment99 · 24/05/2019 17:15

but I do hate that youth is so valued when in actual fact you are young for such a short period of time!

Isthisafreename · 24/05/2019 17:15

@Sparklfairy - It's not nasty to call out pure jealousy.

Bit of a stretch assuming that a view contrary to yours = jealousy.

Aprillygirl · 24/05/2019 17:16

I wouldn't be too chuffed at being told I looked like a child at your age either OP. I remember once being asked if that was an adult or a child's ticket I wanted on the bus when I was around 22 and I was mortified. Then of course your age being questioned in the pubs and clubs while your friends sailed through was a bit of a ball ache. Of course now I'm 43 I love being mistaken for someone much younger so swings and roundabouts I suppose.

Isthisafreename · 24/05/2019 17:17

@Mammylamb - As someone who looked 44 at 34, yabvvvu

I don't see the connection? You look older than you are. Op looks younger. How does how she feels impact on you?

origamiunicorn · 24/05/2019 17:19

I'm in my 30s OP and I hate that I look so much older. I've been refused alcohol in shops and people I haven't previously met seem to address me as if I was 18 and the summer placement. I'm a manager for goodness sake!

origamiunicorn · 24/05/2019 17:19

Ugh, so much younger* Grin
