He really wants to see it at the cinema...how do I tell him that he can't?

sea, has he grasped the concept of Force etc? . The Empire strikes back is really dark though, I think it's too early for my ds... Knowing him he will spend the next few months fixated with the firsrt. that will buy me time

francagoestohollywood · 20/07/2007 20:16

I loved horrors as a teenager, but that's because I wanted to be scared... there mus have been something freudian going on. I stopped watching them for ages, but sea knows that I gave in and watched the descent.

quint · 20/07/2007 20:22

Sorry I think that there is a difference between a teen choosing to watch a horror even though they know they will be scared silly and a 3 or 5 year old being allowed and even actively encouraged to watch a film for children aged 12 and above

francagoestohollywood · 20/07/2007 20:47

sorry it was just stream of counsciousness...

quint · 20/07/2007 21:14

sorry franca wasn't having a go at you personally! Just amazed at some people.

Gosh, I went out this afternoon and this thread has taken on a whole life of it's own. Having watched the trailer, I don't think I will be taking DS to see it, but I am still annoyed that it has this classification. Like someone else said, the merchandise is aimed at young children; we bought a Transformers The Movie first reader in Borders yesterday FGS.

We have a few of the old DVDs and he loves them, and he has lots of toys (again some from the new movie aged 5+ from Toys'r'us). He will be heartbroken when he finds out he can't go.

Reading a few of the posts in depth, I'm feeling a bit got at here...I never actually said I would be taking him...

I also know I'm the boss in my house, deal with his tantrums about things on a weekly basis and don't think I'm a lazy parent (except when I'm MNetting and he's playing with his transformers or watching his transformer videos, of course )

sorry if you feel I was attacking you

I was meaning the parents who think it is a good idea to take 5 year olds to a 12A

It is them, I don't understand why they don't say "no! you are not old enough"

Perhaps it would have been fairer to the little children if they had called the film something else?

daisyandbabybootoo · 20/07/2007 22:04

It's just annoying when the merchandise etc is marketed at small children but they can't see the movie.

2spells - oke doke

daisyandbabybootoo · 20/07/2007 22:27

I see that now LL ....but I will be dealing with the mother and father of all tantrums when he realises he can't go; he's been asking when it's going to be on since we first heard about it months ago.

Maybe Shrek the Third will make up for it, and if he sees (and is scared by) the Transformers trailer, it might make things easier....she says hopefully, steeling herself for some stroppy behaviour.

Kerry Mumbledore- why and how does your 4yo know about Transformers the Movie?? that is slightly less worrying than your apparant unwillingness to say no to a 4yo? If he wasn't exposed to such commercialism, the situation wouldn't arise.

sibble · 20/07/2007 23:59

I took my 7 year old the other week, it's pretty full on with some very graphic war scenes. He was fine (I actually think alot of it went over his head) but there were some bits I was uncomfortable with him seeing.

sibble · 21/07/2007 00:04

having said that he's not seeing harry potter - we talked about the war scenes afterwards and about people killing each other etc. much harder to talk about the 'dark forces' to a 7 year old

my kids went to see harry potter last night and loved it. transformers has finished downloading and they will be able to watch it later. i have allowed them to watch many films in the past, most of which you lot would probably wet your pants at. i havent ever been woken up at night by them because of nightmares.

FoghornLeghorn · 21/07/2007 08:10

Not read whole thread but .......

12a means he can see it as long as he is supervised by an adult although .....

I saw the trailer on Tuesday when seeing HP and it is not like the TV series, it's much more violent, I was actually quite shocked. I wouldn't take a 5 year old to see it personally
