i find it funny when people say "oh they won't be scared" how do you know for sure.
ds is 15 and a while back we got war of the worlds. thought well he has seen the punisher and loved it so this won't scare him. he hated it and left the room. said it was to dark.
I would have thought he would have been fine........just goes to show you never know.

I usually avoid these threads with a barge pole, but I think there is alot of speculation based on the trailer alone. I have, as I said, seen the film and I don't think you can always judge a film by the trailer. How many times have you seen a film and been disappointed or sat through something you weren't expecting? We saw Bridge to Terrabithia (?sp) based on the trailer and hype. It was nothing like it. ds1 sat through it but was bored. We also saw shrek 3. Of the 3 films at age 7 his favourite by far was Transformers. He's not been affected by it. We talked about war death etc afterwards. That is a minor part of the film at the end of the day, good triumphs over evil and there are some very funny moments. The moment that made me squirm was not the war scenes but when they talk about masturbation for a nano second, but I'm convinced it was my embarrasment and it went straight over his head. Do we not sometimes project our own thoughts about what we are seeing onto our children when they are just waiting for the next 'hero' to come on the screen. Ask him who his favourite is - Optimus, 'cos he's cool and he saves the day'.

People still don''t seem to get it. It isn;t necessarily about whether your child will be scared by a film but whether the film is appropriate for their age group.

HP is most definitely not appropriate for a 5 year old to watch. I can't comment on transformers as I haven;t yet seen it, however the trailer certainly looks as though it isn't.

I agree with the OP that it is wrong for the merchandise to be aimed at young children when they can;t watch the film. Sorry you felt got at however you did ask how can I tell him he can;t watch the film, my posts were mainly directed at those who said that they would definitley take their 3 and 5 yrd olds to watch them.

If anyone is interested, DH took our 10 yr old yesterday. It wasn't (according to DH) particularly violent unless you happened to be a robot. DS#1 wasn't frightened or, as far as we can tell, psychologically scarred. He thought it was the coolest film he'd ever seen . DD and DS#2 however would have been too young for it, found it alarming and/or boring and instead went with me to Hestercombe House and had a walk around the landscape gardens, rolled down the grass slopes, played cafe in the charcoal burners hut, took it in turns to pretend to be the witch who lived in the witches hut and then had tea and cakes in the tea room. And I know which I'd rather have done .
