To find Mumsnet to be very Victorian?

I'm not sure if maybe this was always the case and I'm just slow to pick up on it but... AIBU to find Mumsnet very Victorian? It seems like a lot of people post here just to shame others and like to control/dictate behaviour. In a historical context the shame aspect reminds me of the Victorian Era with individuals gossiping amongst neighbours to join in. Flaming the OP for having feelings that are contrary to the majority seems a bit of a sport.

Is Mumsnet the technical modern age answer to Victorian Era levels of propriety and shame? I'm just posting this for discussion of an observation and wondering if this was always the point of this website.

‘Show them this thread.’

Yes, cos looking like a weirdo will totally win me the argument.

Moralitym1n1 · 22/05/2019 21:49

How very dare you, pinkarsedfly I am a lay-dee. Large is perfectly adequate thank you.

BlackPrism · 22/05/2019 21:50

Anonymity makes people true unencumbered opinions come out - and people have a lot of opinions.

Pinkarsedfly · 22/05/2019 21:51

A petit filous?

Why not go the whole hog and just mainline heroin?

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 22/05/2019 21:52

Moralitym1n1 · 22/05/2019 21:52

Op found out her husband:-|:-P, with whom she has 3 young children, cheated - yesterday.

She hasn't kicked him out, moved out, set up visitation, applied for cm, filed for divorce etc etc within 24 hours ..

You're going to stay with him, aren't you op?

SarahAndQuack · 22/05/2019 21:52

Missing the point by a country mile, I know, but I think you know fuck all about the Victorians.

Moralitym1n1 · 22/05/2019 21:53

Have no idea where those random smilies came from.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 22/05/2019 21:54

Why come here, then?

Seriously - if you don’t like the general tone of MN, why keep on visiting the site?

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 22/05/2019 21:55

but I think you know fuck all about the Victorians
Maybe,aye,maybe naw.but it’ll be a better read than Rees-moog and his book

CarolDanvers · 22/05/2019 21:55

It's ok to discuss what you don't like about something without having to abandon it all together isn't it?

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 22/05/2019 21:58

It’ll be no time til the good old days crew turn up,reminiscing, dabbing wet eyes
They’ll reproach you for not being all jolly or knowing we dine that already
Bet you have a toilet brush op, and that you don’t have a stash of zoflora

UrsulaPandress · 22/05/2019 21:59

It was better back in the day. There are some right arses on here now.

pictish · 22/05/2019 21:59

‘What are you going to do about it OP?’

I hate that. I think it’s intended to be rousing but it’s so unkind.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 22/05/2019 22:00

Aha and there it is.the good ole days.everyone knew everyone,it was naice

calpoppincalpol · 22/05/2019 22:01

YANBU it's mostly women on mn and women are complete bitches to each other.

Maybebaybe · 22/05/2019 22:03

Mumupmanship is what it is.

SarahAndQuack · 22/05/2019 22:04

Grin Can't argue with that, @lipstickhandbagcoffee.

Calltheguards · 22/05/2019 22:06

@SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius I think some posters are genuine/helpful and create informative posts about things that I do not know about. Some posters can disagree with OP yet not 🔥, and they facilitate meaningful discussion. The Victorian ones I'm talking about just like to judge and shame, without putting much thought in to it. It's just an observation.

I blame Mrs. Hinch Grin

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 22/05/2019 22:08

Except the old days is undetermined time, from when one joined and it passes into yore
So one persons ole day is another person newbie.
It’s the mythology of it that’s important as opposed to the time period the fondly recalled and sentimental stories.all embellished & airbrushed of course

NeverSayFreelance · 22/05/2019 22:08

YANBU. Worst I saw was last week (I think) where OP was asking for advice and instead just got hundreds of comments judging her and telling her what a bad person she was - when she hadn't done anything wrong! It gets so judgemental on here sometimes.

Although I get more stressed by the middle class posts I cannot relate to at all Grin
