Mobile phone ban in spa

Whilst I fully expect a spa to have a silent mobile phone policy, why is it necessary to have a blanket ban? How is reading an article on a phone different to kindle or book which are allowed? How does me sending a text disturb anyone else?

I have a spa day booked but having just read the ban on phones (according to their info you will be asked to leave if caught with a phone anywhere other than the changing rooms) I am now wanting to cancel. I have a 2 month old baby and a 2 year old and would feel very uncomfortable about being uncontactable all day.

I never go to a spa because of this, I cannot be off grid for a whole day in case something happens to elderly parents/kids

Life of the midlife woman. So this midlife woman does not go to spa's anymore

AJPTaylor · 19/05/2019 21:22

Back in the day before mobile phones genuinely you just told people where you were going. Receptionist would go and find you. Can't believe they couldn't do that.

flowery · 19/05/2019 21:22

”Like where?”

Concert where videoing the performers is banned? School nativity where photos are banned? Restaurant where you are expected to wear clothes rather than swimwear? Church where you are expected to cover shoulders? Event where you are not allowed to bring glass bottles? Sports match where you’re not allowed alcohol?

Plenty of places have restrictions.

flowery · 19/05/2019 21:24

”Not body confident? On the contrary they’d have to be somewhat self obsessed to think a total stranger would be interested in taking a photo of them and putting it on their social media”

As I said, this happened last time I was at a spa. Teenagers were filming everyone in the pool. I’m not “self-obsessed” enough to think they were aiming at me in particular, but they certainly ‘got’ me in shot. I’m not that bothered but some people are.

Allhailthesun · 19/05/2019 21:25

Or you could use the reception land land to call home.

ManchesterBorn all of your examples are the antithesis of why you go to a spa.

Passthecherrycoke · 19/05/2019 21:25

Flowery I think you’re misunderstanding what people want to do in spas with their phones Confused it’s nothing to do with trying to get bootleg footage or photos of strangers, it’s about what you want to do when you relax which as long as you’re respectful with noise, doesn’t affect anyone.

Plenty of places have restrictions and therefore we chose whether we want to go there and comply or not. Plenty of posters have said they’d cancel, so I don’t really get the point you’re trying to make

ManchesterBorn · 19/05/2019 21:28

Allhailthesun

all my examples tell you why I would be able to go to a spa, whilst it would have been impossible in the past, without my phone.

Not sure why you can't understand that

flowery · 19/05/2019 21:30

”Flowery I think you’re misunderstanding what people want to do in spas with their phones it’s nothing to do with trying to get bootleg footage or photos of strangers, it’s about what you want to do when you relax which as long as you’re respectful with noise, doesn’t affect anyone.”

I’m not misunderstanding anything thanks. I’m sure most people are perfectly respectful. I’m just pointing out one of the reasons why phones might be banned in a spa, and asking for a bit of empathy for people who have expressed concern about behaviour that absolutely does take place.

Most people would be quiet and respectful with their phones but lots of people use them anti-socially, and in a quiet relaxing environment it only takes a couple of people doing that to ruin it.

”Plenty of places have restrictions and therefore we chose whether we want to go there and comply or not.”

Indeed. I was just asking whether you consider all places with restrictions to be “treating you like a child” and whether you therefore avoid all such places.

ManchesterBorn · 19/05/2019 21:30

Not body confident? On the contrary they’d have to be somewhat self obsessed to think a total stranger would be interested in taking a photo of them and putting it on their social media

lol that's a very good point actually Grin

Banhaha · 19/05/2019 21:30

@Passthecherrycoke
Someone who genuinely goes around worrying about that is a bit pathetic imo

You are entitled to your opinion but people worry about it because it happens. And unfortunately to some people it happens a lot. From the sniggery whispers people think can't be overheard to the photos and open pointing and mocking. It adds up and it hurts.

Chloemol · 19/05/2019 21:31

Hmm how sad that you feel it’s important to have a phone. I get you want to be able to be contacted, but guess what happened before mobile phones, yes a landline was used, and you know people have legs, they can walk and I am pretty sure could find you.

ChipSandwich · 19/05/2019 21:31

Some people have real anxiety at the thought of being separated from their phone. I think they really, genuinely need them to be able to relax. It's a growing problem.

coconuttelegraph · 19/05/2019 21:32

Spa days are optional, spas are fully entitled to set their own rules, if you don't want to abide by those rules go somewhere else, hardly rocket science

Passthecherrycoke · 19/05/2019 21:34

There is a difference between perverts taking photos - which can happen in a regular swimming pool/ gym/ through a hole in a public loo- and the fear that kids (not usually allowed in spas) or other guests are taking photos of you in your robe because you’re overweight or whatever. That’s self obsessed

ManchesterBorn · 19/05/2019 21:34

before mobile phone I couldn't have got an email so would have been stuck in the office all day for that one message.

ballsdeep · 19/05/2019 21:36

I think with the amount of people taking pictures of people in their bikinis who aren't up to their 'standard' of beauty and posting on social media, it's a good idea.

GabsAlot · 19/05/2019 21:36

So what if they let one person in with a mobile someone else says well if they can so can I then youve got everyone talking on their phones or playing stuff loudly

Why cant people just consider others for once

Lovemusic33 · 19/05/2019 21:37

If you don’t like the rules then go to a different spa.

I used to go to a gym with a no phone rule, I needed my phone as I’m I have kids with medical issues. I changed gyms and can now take my phone in with me.

Gamble66 · 19/05/2019 21:38

It only takes a few minutes on Google to understand why anybody who is overweight, has scars, a physical disablity, has birthmarks or a mastectomy or Anything similar would like to be able to spend the day in a swimming costume without worrying about sone bastard taking a photo of them and holding them up for ridicule.

Boom45 · 19/05/2019 21:39

As well as the peace and quiet angle at a spa your dressing gown spends a fair amount of time hung up, with lots of other identical ones, out of sight. If phones weren't banned lots of those dressing gowns would have valuable phones in the pockets and i imagine very easy to steal. Not something either the clients or the spa would enjoy much.

ChipSandwich · 19/05/2019 21:41

What about people who can't function without their phone for a couple of hours? That can't be healthy

Passthecherrycoke · 19/05/2019 21:41

I’ve just tried out of interest. Spa photos scar, spa photos fat and spa photos disability don’t bring up anything apart from photos of treatments for the above (or accessible spas for those with disabilities) what does your google look up? Confused

Passthecherrycoke · 19/05/2019 21:42

It’s not about functioning chip, it’s about having something to do whilst you rest ie read, watch a film etc. Saves you carrying around books or similar

Banhaha · 19/05/2019 21:43

@Gamble66 you expressed this so well. It happens and it happens a lot more than people who it doesn't happen to realise.
