Mobile phone ban in spa

Whilst I fully expect a spa to have a silent mobile phone policy, why is it necessary to have a blanket ban? How is reading an article on a phone different to kindle or book which are allowed? How does me sending a text disturb anyone else?

I have a spa day booked but having just read the ban on phones (according to their info you will be asked to leave if caught with a phone anywhere other than the changing rooms) I am now wanting to cancel. I have a 2 month old baby and a 2 year old and would feel very uncomfortable about being uncontactable all day.

Can’t believe people would cancel the day rather than be without their phones. Good grief.

Good for the spa. Last time we went to Center Parcs spa I was in the pool and a couple of teenagers came into the pool area and started filming everyone in the pool. HmmShockAngry

Dress it up how you like but you're an addict. One day won't kill you.

regmover · 19/05/2019 20:56

Brilliant. Where is this wonderful place?

IronManisnotDead · 19/05/2019 21:00

Because people take photos of others without their consent. Seriously Hmm

Passthecherrycoke · 19/05/2019 21:02

Because I’m not paying good money to be treated like a child flowery. If I want to use my phone or tablet I expect to have the choice to do that, within the obvious confines of noises etx

NancyJoan · 19/05/2019 21:02

It’s my decision how I choose to relax and if I want my phone on my person I don’t see why that should be banned as it doesn’t affect anyone else.

But it does affect other people. Seeing you with a phone in your hand could make the other spa users (who have gone there to relax) nervous that you are going to take a picture/video. Then they won't be able to relax.

Your needs don't trump their, esp when you can easily give the main spa number to the person looking after your kids. Who I assume is a trusted adult, and unlikely to need to ring you.

chipsandgin · 19/05/2019 21:04

Love it. Such a great idea (& if it stops the duck face selfie brigade then even better!). The spa in Bath has a ban for those that are interested..

Sweetsandcrisps · 19/05/2019 21:05

I’m sure you can be without your phone for a day. Just leave the spa number with your family so they can phone in case of emergency x

Passthecherrycoke · 19/05/2019 21:06

Someone who genuinely goes around worrying about that is a bit pathetic imo Nancyjoan

Beautiful3 · 19/05/2019 21:06

I think it's a great idea. I'm sure you can give the number of the spa in an emergency?!

Antigon · 19/05/2019 21:07

Non-issue. keep it in your gown pocket. if it vibrates, go to loo.

MerlinsScarf · 19/05/2019 21:09

I see what you mean, you need to be contactable, but how about making sure the person looking after your DC has the reception number, and you could drop by between sessions to check there's no message?

My last gym had a no phones rule, for a while people were pretty good about it. It was great because I never felt pressured to check emails etc. But people started using them as music players (OK, understandable, so nobody cracked down on it), then eventually checking messages while sitting around on machines they'd finished on, making calls, guys posing around taking pictures... So it did make a real difference (and it's so much hard to get inconsiderate people to stop what they're doing if it's not a blanket ban).

speakout · 19/05/2019 21:09

I am of a generation before mobile phones.

It was rather lovely to be out of contact for periods of time.

TheFaerieQueene · 19/05/2019 21:11

What do you think we did before bloody mobile phones? If you haven’t got the ability to survive for a few hours without a phone, perhaps you need to give your head a wobble?

Jaspermcsween · 19/05/2019 21:11

It’s a great policy.
Wish more places did this

flowery · 19/05/2019 21:15

Does the same apply to anywhere you go that has rules? Are all venues with any restrictions on behaviour or what you can bring, what you have to wear or anything else all treating you like a child, just because you don’t want to abide by the rules they set?

Passthecherrycoke · 19/05/2019 21:15

Like where?

asheepysheep · 19/05/2019 21:15

I think it sounds fantastic!

I'm a 90s kid so most kids at school had a phone when they were 11/12 and I still think it's ridiculous and unhealthy how addicted some people are to their devices. It's a tiny piece of shitting metal and glass.

Of course the spa staff would come and find you in an emergency. Do you honestly never go to places with poor signal in case of an emergency?

ManchesterBorn · 19/05/2019 21:16

that's such a stupid argument.

Before mobile phone, I wouldn't have been able to work from home and be out and about, I would have been stuck in my office.
Before mobile phone, I would have had to stick to a rigid schedule because I couldn't have arranged last minute pick-up of my kids.
Before mobile phone, I would also have found many more public phones funnily enough.

If you go far enough, people didn't have spa, how did they manage?

NotWithTheProgramme · 19/05/2019 21:18

What would you do if you phone got nicked when you hung up your dressing gown outside the sauna, you really would be uncontactable then...

Leave it in the lockers, and nip back to check.

ooft · 19/05/2019 21:18

I was on a spa day recently and I actually reported a lady for being on her mobile phone as I was sure she was taking photos and I was very uncomfortable

Thinkinghappythoughts · 19/05/2019 21:19

I went on a spa weekend recently that had a ban on phones, I wasn’t the only one that had it in my robe pocket on silent and I saw a lot of people discreetly checking their phones.

That's what the kids at school do. Fairly disrespectful from an adult.

We go indoor climbing. There are big notices in the kiddies section "No taking photos while belaying". For non-climbers belaying is when the person at the bottom holds the rope (with both hands) for safety of the other person climbing.

People are addicted and some fall into a me me mentality without any thought for anyone around them (and lose a little bit of their brain at the same time).

flowery · 19/05/2019 21:19

Have some empathy. Plenty of people aren’t body-confident and wouldn’t like the thought of appearing on someone’s Facebook page in their cossie. In a spa you ought to be able to wander around in swimming attire without worrying about this. As my earlier post indicates, if phones are allowed, it is a genuine risk. I imagine I ended up on someone’s instagram when I was last at Center Parcs.

Passthecherrycoke · 19/05/2019 21:19

Before phones I would’ve taken a book. Thanks to kindle I no longer buy books. Why shouldn’t I read my phone or tablet? Confused

Passthecherrycoke · 19/05/2019 21:20

Not body confident? On the contrary they’d have to be somewhat self obsessed to think a total stranger would be interested in taking a photo of them and putting it on their social media
