Mobile phone ban in spa

WhenZogateSuperworm · 19/05/2019 19:50

Whilst I fully expect a spa to have a silent mobile phone policy, why is it necessary to have a blanket ban? How is reading an article on a phone different to kindle or book which are allowed? How does me sending a text disturb anyone else?

I have a spa day booked but having just read the ban on phones (according to their info you will be asked to leave if caught with a phone anywhere other than the changing rooms) I am now wanting to cancel. I have a 2 month old baby and a 2 year old and would feel very uncomfortable about being uncontactable all day.

I think its reasonable-maybe they tried the silent thing and people didnt listen and just shrieked on their phones and disturbed everyone so they banned them

I hate to use the cliche but what would you have done 30 years ago did your parents freak out everytime they went out without you

Hiddenaspie1973 · 19/05/2019 20:28

I'd love a spa which bans phones.

underneaththeash · 19/05/2019 20:30

Many nice spas I go to ban mobiles (which is great), you just go to the changing rooms periodically and check to see there hasn't been any emergencies.

EdWinchester · 19/05/2019 20:30

YABU

Check on your phone regularly if you must.

Or wear a fitbit/apple watch to get text notifications.

Jaxhog · 19/05/2019 20:31

Because while you might respect others and not make endless loud annoying calls, otherrs may not. Since they don't know who would and who wouldn't - they've made the blanket ban.

I personally hate that there are mobile phones everywhere, ringing and disturbing my peace. It's nice to know that there is at least one place where this won't happen.

If you don't like it, go to another Spa.

Justwanttotravel · 19/05/2019 20:31

Get a grip!

BackforGood · 19/05/2019 20:32

YABU
If you can't manage without your phone for the duration of a spa treatment, you have a serious problem. I think it's an excellent policy to ban them.

this ^

Seriously, if there ever were such an emergency, which, in terms of risk assessment is pretty unlikely, do you honestly think that the staff wouldn't be willing and able to find you. Hmm

HollaHolla · 19/05/2019 20:33

I had to complain about a mother filming her kids in the pool on my last spa day. She was standing right next to the ‘No phones or cameras’ sign. She claimed she didn’t think that applied to her. She was filming everyone in the pool, without our permission.
It’s people like this who spoil it for everyone else, and why this policy is required.
You’ll cope, and they’ll find you if they really need to.

Littleheart5 · 19/05/2019 20:34

Have to say I agree with this policy. Nothing worse than a spa day where a phone on ‘silent’ is buzzing and buzzing beside you as someone texts into all their whatsapp groups!

MashedSpud · 19/05/2019 20:35

A spa is meant to be relaxing, a spa break. I’m all for a blanket ban.

WhenZogateSuperworm · 19/05/2019 20:40

I can put my phone down, I can manage without it. But I find being told I have to just annoys me. It’s my decision how I choose to relax and if I want my phone on my person I don’t see why that should be banned as it doesn’t affect anyone else.

I do disagree with people talking on phones or them not being on silent in a spa- that’s unfair on others.

It will also be about insurance probably - a new iPhone can cost over £1000, if one was to get damaged/wet/stolen or whatever then someone might complain and try to claim against the spa - far easier & safer to just not allow them.

Floatyboat · 19/05/2019 20:43

Yabu. Get a grip.

Disconnect a little, let go. Or if that is not possible for you don't go to the spa. Most people like spas with such a policy so why ruin it for them?

ChipSandwich · 19/05/2019 20:44

It’s my decision how I choose to relax

That's true. You just can't take your phone into that spa. Simple

ladybee28 · 19/05/2019 20:44

It’s my decision how I choose to relax

Absolutely.

You can relax in a spa without your phone, or you can relax somewhere else with it. Totally your decision.

OhTheRoses · 19/05/2019 20:45

This is what I don't want at a spa - on mega volume. And I don't wsnt to hear Harriet and Camilla braying about the hunt either. Pretty much the same in a different accent - often louder.

Hello, how are you
Nah he didn't
The little fucker
What you gonna do
You know Laurie, yea
She said that
Not right innit
You going up Carla's Saturday
Nah, Julie's not invited
Hahahaha
Ah, yeh bitch
What time you home tonight
See ya babe

Banhaha · 19/05/2019 20:46

If someone sees you with your phone held up as you are reading it they have no idea if you are filming or videoing. Maybe if you put gaffer tape over the camera I'd just about be comfortable with it but if I saw you from far away and didn't notice I might still be worried you were taking pictures to laugh at me.

Could you leave it with reception and ask them to get you if it rings?

European12345 · 19/05/2019 20:46

If you can’t be a few hours without the phone because you’ve got small children and they might need you ... then maybe you’re not ready to have a spa day. When we become parents we need to assume there will be things that will have t change to before and this is one of them not being dependant on the phone just in case

I only went t a spa day when my baby was nearly 1year and I could feel confident with myself that I was ready not to hear about him for a few hours. Until then i was refusing not to be contactable just in cSe

Btw I agree phones should be ban in spas

OddBoots · 19/05/2019 20:46

If you personally won't relax without your phone then you are well within your rights not to go to that spa. Getting a refund will obviously depend on the T&Cs you have already signed up to.

lazyarse123 · 19/05/2019 20:46

They want banning from most public places too. I work in a shop and the amount of people who do a lot of shopping while having a constant loud conversation that you can hear every word is awful. I asked a young man if his wife was recovering from her operation and he asked if I knew her and i said no but I had heard him telling his friend for the last 10 minutes. He looked surprised that I had heard him, and don't get me started on the people who carry on talking while I serve them without even acknowledging my existence. So rude.

BritWifeinUSA · 19/05/2019 20:49

Which spa is this? I’d like to book when I next take a trip back to England. It sounds perfect.

Their house, their rules. If you don’t like them, you can book elsewhere. Do you think you’re going to be the only one there who has children at home?

stucknoue · 19/05/2019 20:51

I've seen a no electronics policy (kindles, iPads included) because it's about relaxation. As long as you know the policy when you book. Most places would be fine with you giving the reception number to your sitter

Millie2018 · 19/05/2019 20:51

I went on a spa weekend recently that had a ban on phones, I wasn’t the only one that had it in my robe pocket on silent and I saw a lot of people discreetly checking their phones. No one said anything.

woodhill · 19/05/2019 20:52

How on earth did we all manage without mobile phones having dc

I'm sick of them disturbing my peace when I'm out and about.

Just leave your details at reception

Cottonwoolmouth · 19/05/2019 20:55

Cancel if you can’t cope with out it
