Mobile phone ban in spa

WhenZogateSuperworm · 19/05/2019 19:50

Whilst I fully expect a spa to have a silent mobile phone policy, why is it necessary to have a blanket ban? How is reading an article on a phone different to kindle or book which are allowed? How does me sending a text disturb anyone else?

I have a spa day booked but having just read the ban on phones (according to their info you will be asked to leave if caught with a phone anywhere other than the changing rooms) I am now wanting to cancel. I have a 2 month old baby and a 2 year old and would feel very uncomfortable about being uncontactable all day.

Many people have young children and work in an environment where they can not have their phones on them. Yabu

I wish all spas did this. I go every year to a fancy spa which my friends and I adore. It costs a packet but we save for our annual getaway.

There's a beautiful, tranquil relaxation room which is so wonderfully designed, we all manage to drop off in there at some point over the weekend.

But twats being what they are, the 'silence is golden' sign on the door isn't enough to deter the phone addicts. They now have a polite sign saying its a mobile free zone.

Still not enough. People just don't believe it applies to them. I had to ask a pair of silly idiots to switch their phones off last time I was in there, which they hissed about but who cares.

When it comes to mobile phones, signs aren't enough. You have to actively tell people. A ban seems like the best way to me, then people have effectively agreed ahead of time not to use them.

Now if someone could wave a magic wand over the quiet coach on the train, that would be even better.

Ofgs, some people are so bloody sanctimonious. Lots of people like using their phones to relax and would be disappointed at not being able to use it at a spa where they're, yanno, trying to relax. I'd be pissed off if I wasn't allowed to take my kindle to a spa. It's not really any different. As long as it's not disturbing anyone else then why does it matter?

LoafofSellotape · 19/05/2019 20:12

Are you really saying you can't go one day without your phone?!

Give the babysitter the spa's number and they can find you in an emergency just like people used to do before everyone had phones.

Leeds2 · 19/05/2019 20:12

Who will be looking after your children?

Rezie · 19/05/2019 20:13

I'm sure they have an intercom for emergencies. Also if you want to be cheeky you can have it on vibrate in your pocket and only take it out if it rings and run outside to answer.

I was recently on a restaurant that had a phone ban. It was amazing. The food was fancy and beautiful and the place was beautiful and I really wanted to take a photo but couldn't. It was amazing to just enjoy it.

SauvignonBlanche · 19/05/2019 20:13

This is one of those what would you have done 15/20 years ago situations when barely anyone had mobile phones

It’s a wonder we ever dared leave the house Hmm

MorrisZapp · 19/05/2019 20:14

Of course it will disturb others. Loads of people don't even know that their phone has a silent setting, far less have the awareness to use it. In a relaxation room, the flickering screen is distracting.

HappilyHarridan · 19/05/2019 20:15

Just keep it in your dressing gown pocket and check it when you go to the toilet.

Passthecherrycoke · 19/05/2019 20:15

I’d cancel. What would you do all day hanging round the side of the pool without a phone? Of course you could take a book or managzine but as you say why not take your phone which has all of that on there and fits neatly in your pocket Shock

LarryGreysonsDoor · 19/05/2019 20:16

When I was young and used to baby sit the parents would leave the number of the pub or restaurant.
I’m guessing that would still work.

Whatdoyouknowwhenyouknownowt · 19/05/2019 20:16

You don't need to look very far to see people taking sneaky pics to upload to shame people. I've certainly seen changing room shots & I've even ever looked...

Ihatemyseleffordoingthis · 19/05/2019 20:17

YABU the point of a spa is to relax and be uncontactable.
We've only really had mobile phones for @20 or so years.
It sounds to me like it would do you good for whomsoever's looking after your kid not to be able to reach you.

ChipSandwich · 19/05/2019 20:18

Before the advent of mobile phones I needed to be contactable whilst my epileptic SEN non verbal daughter was in respite care, or with her dad. Whatever I did I had to keep nipping home every couple of hours for any possible messages, although it was easier for me to give them a call from time to time. Trust me, in the unlikely event of a real emergency, they would find you. Perfectly reasonable to ban mobile phones in a spa

IDontDrinkTea · 19/05/2019 20:19

I think this is a brilliant idea. Nothing relaxing about hearing people chatting on the phone, the constant text alerts, the worry you accidentally appear in the background of someone’s selfie that’s going to be plastered all over Facebook...

Wish more spas would implement this rule!

MrsTerryPratchett · 19/05/2019 20:19

Loads of people don't even know that their phone has a silent setting, far less have the awareness to use it.

Or don't switch off the bloody clicky texting noises. Or the vibrate is bloody loud.

I love a good no mobiles policy.

FlorenceandtheWashingMachine · 19/05/2019 20:21

I went to a spa recently and a guy was watching cricket in the sauna with the sound on. He full on eye rolled when I asked him.

I never take my phone in. It's part of what I am paying to get away from.

AlexaAmbidextra · 19/05/2019 20:22

However did we manage in the days before we were contactable 24/7? There was life before mobile phones and we all lived our lives perfectly well and safely for years without them.

SpoonBlender · 19/05/2019 20:25

Put the fucking phone down for four hours and relax. You don't need a constant stream of information beamed into your eyeballs all the time.

Gingerkittykat · 19/05/2019 20:25

There will be women walking around in swimwear, it is reasonable no devices with cameras are allowed. I'm sure you would respect people's privacy but others might use it as an opportunity to take unwanted pics or videos.

I think they should also ban the phone in the changing room.

qazxc · 19/05/2019 20:26

I think it's a perfectly reasonable rule.
phones have cameras
people do not want to listen to phones ringing or texts pinging or people having conversations on phones.

Let whoever is minding kids know number of spa in case of emergency and you can also check messages by going to check in locker.
Enjoy your temporary escape from real life and relax.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 19/05/2019 20:27

It's a great idea.

WeWantJustice · 19/05/2019 20:27

Yes, YABU.

Give the spa number out for emergencies, of course they'll come and find you if they need to.

Feel the pleasure of not having your little security blanket in your pocket and know that you don't need it. Give yourself up to the relaxation and stop worrying.

Enjoy yourself. Smile

Breastfeedingworries · 19/05/2019 20:27

Phones were banned, but me and my friend snuck ours in to take pictures 😂🙈 of us in the different spa rooms. Just put it in dressing gown on silent. O my took quick snaps not to damage phone. We weren’t on it much though. Wanted to relax and enjoy ourselves. I certainly wasn’t texting, I was relaxing Grin

Still18atheart · 19/05/2019 20:27

SauvignonBlanche well quite we survived somehow. Had some lovely spa days pre mobile phone Grin
