To think that Deliciously Ella is unbearably smug?

Just that really. I used to be a fan. However recent pregnancy updates are incredibly smug and found her podcast awful - constantly interrupting guests. Am I being mean? Not sure why it annoys me so much!

Lol Sinkgirl rather autocorrect

BlueSkiesLies · 21/05/2019 10:13

the explosion of all the hemsleys

My least favorite food bloggers ever.

Bone broth. Nurishing bone broth.

ARGH fuck off its fucking stock!!!!!!! aaaannnnnnd breathe

MarshaBradyo · 21/05/2019 10:13

Also if she believes in hypnobirthing atm I not sure she does owe it to people to change this view - people do have to take responsibility for seeking out better opinions

She’s not falsely claiming to be an expert in birthing, she’s just someone who has become known by many

People need to get a degree of ownership about who they follow and the words they hang on to

Passthecherrycoke · 21/05/2019 10:17

I don’t think anyone is thinking of taking birthing advice from her, just thinking she sounds like a bit of a wally

MarshaBradyo · 21/05/2019 10:18

Good

DreamingofSunshine · 21/05/2019 10:23

blueskies I know, people where I live pay $8 a cup!! Guess my Nana was onto something with her chicken soup being a cure all.

FWIW if anyone wants plant based recipes from a Doctor, Dr Rupy Ajula aka the Doctor's Kitchen is very good. No use of 'clean' just lots of recipes to get the veg in.

ApricotExpat · 21/05/2019 10:43

She doesn't proton clean eating!!! Just encourages more fruit / veg in our daily lives. Who knew that was such a crime!

ApricotExpat · 21/05/2019 10:43

sp - promote

Oh really?

*Never use things like vegetable oil, vegan butters and sunflower oil – these are nasty and processed.

The main reason that I don’t eat peanuts is that they’re especially susceptible to mould and fungal invasions and are particularly linked to one mould that produced aflatoxin, a known carcinogen (linked especially to liver cancer).

I know that in an ideal world we’d all live off kale and cucumber, but I think it’s probably unlikely that any of us are saintly enough to do that.

To really thrive you should say goodbye to the following as they’re all incredibly acidic and your body works best when it’s alkaline, they’re also really hard to digest which means they suck your energy and slow down your digestion (She goes on to list all dairy, gluten, refined sugar, meat, fish, eggs and products labelled as healthy in the supermarkets)*

littlemimosa · 21/05/2019 10:57

Gosh just looked at her insta page and what a lot of sugar! So many recipes for muffins, cupcakes, sweet treats etc. I know they contain things like maple syrup instead of refined sugar but it's still sugar to your body and is celebrating sweet stuff when we should all be trying to break that addiction. Very surprised.....

She IS a bit smug but aren't ALL similar people on insta?? Don't think she's any worse than the rest of them.

NotAnotherJaffaCake · 21/05/2019 11:02

Gilliam McKeith was old enough that we could all slag her off as a crone, this new generation of batshit fake science orthorexics are still young enough to be given a pass.

Selling a dream of being thin and beautiful is easier when you are young and thin and conventionally attractive, with pots of cash to paper over the cracks.

ApricotExpat · 21/05/2019 11:03

Again - how can that be a problem? Vegan margarine / spreads etc are hugely processed and grim.

DreamingofSunshine · 21/05/2019 11:05

littlemimosa she told me that the cakes etc get the most likes on social media but far less people actually make them. By contrast, the veg dishes get less attention but the market research showed that her followers were more likely to make them. It's certainly true for me.

Passthecherrycoke · 21/05/2019 11:16

Agreed jaffa

Cloudyz7 · 21/05/2019 11:28

Yes, I find her unbearably smug too.

Although my biggest issue is that by using things like madjool dates, maple syrup, cacao nibs etc etc in her recipes she is perpetuating the myth that healthy /'clean' eating is expensive. Not everyone can afford to do their weekly shop at Whole Foods or Planet Organic.

I've looked at her recipes and most of her sweet things have way too many calories for my liking. I'd rather have a banana or a few squares of dark chocolate if I fancy something sweet.

littlemimosa · 21/05/2019 11:29

DreamingofSunshine - that's interesting. Just a bit of eye candy for the website then. Still recipes high in sugar though. I guess a vegan diet is fairly restrictive though so people maybe need those things to make it more interesting.

This topic does bring home the amount of non-qualified folk online who are promoting one singular way of eating. It brought to mind 'Wellness Mama' who promotes a paleo way of eating which is in direct contrast to Ella's (albeit both promote fruits and vegetables of course!). Her insta recipes are full of meat, fish, veggies, zero sugar of any form, no legumes at all and no carbs (except those found in veggies). She is as persuasive as Ella in that their 'way' is the ultimate way to good health. It's quite damaging and creates a lot of anxiety around food.

There has to be balance in life. And what works for one person's body would be a nightmare for another's. I just hope young girls growing up today recognise this.

Ellabella989 · 21/05/2019 11:39

Is her mum the heiress to Sainsbury’s?
I do find Ella quite smug but I enjoy making some of her recipes and I find her podcast interesting. I’m also jealous of her husband as he’s gorgeous!

MarshaBradyo · 21/05/2019 11:42

How much would that have helped when she started blogging? People wouldn’t have known and just followed

Marushka82 · 21/05/2019 11:53

I found her post about her birth plan and hypnobirthing quite self righteous and naive. The discussion under it really upset me - all these women praising hypnobirthing and saying they had amazing experiences and the exact births they wanted; I just felt like the majority of the comments demonised having a baby at the hospital. The issue is, while it's great to do research and equip yourself with some knowledge about what kind of 'ideal' birth you would like, the fact is that until you go into labour you have zero idea how your body will behave. I certainly naively envisioned breathing through my contractions while in a birth pool only to have my perfect birth plan shatter to pieces when my waters started seeping early and I had to be induced, have epidural and then forceps.

All I'm saying is I wish her well and hope her birth experience is great, but I find it incredibly smug to say: we've done the research and this works for us etc. To quote GoT, you know nothing Jon Snow :)

AlexaAmbidextra · 21/05/2019 11:57

Anybody who peddles the shit that you can influence your body’s acid/alkaline balance by what you eat deserves to be ridiculed. It’s absolute bollocks.

Marushka82 · 21/05/2019 12:13

I like some of her recipes but will never believe that she eats everything she claims (nut balls or medjool dates with lashings of almond butter). I have her app and saw a recipe for overnight oats which must have been at least 500 cals in total (of course she doesn't add calorific values of the meals as she's all about feeding your body nice plant based meals, but come on!). There was 60g of oats, then a giant heaped spoonful of peanut butter, then maple syrup. and then the toppings: more peanut butter, raisins, and more maple syrup! If I followed the recipes to the letter I would be the size of the house (and skint after buying medjool dates by the kilo :D

MyMumDimensionJumps · 21/05/2019 12:17

Despite what I said earlier, I can see why she's slim and I'm struggling to lose the post-baby weight: I've just had a look in the fridge as I'm breastfeeding and starving, I spotted some squirty cream and then yanked the nozzle off and sprayed it straight into my gob. Does that count as clean eating? There's no washing up, so the kitchen has remained clean. Grin Perhaps I should have a look at her recipes after all.

AnnaSteen · 21/05/2019 12:23

@mymumdimesionjumps that wasn’t even the best bit of that article. Apparently her and her DH decided at the start of the week to try to conceive. ‘Within the week’ she knew she was pregnant as ‘my body changed so much’. My eyes nearly rolled out of my head!

BarnabasTheMaineCoon · 21/05/2019 13:13

Is her mum the heiress to Sainsbury’s?

Yes. She didn't become famous by chance.
