How dreadful does Madonna sound on Eurovision?

This is hideous

I watched it and was shocked at how poorly she sang. I thought that maybe she was ill. I also wondered how Terry Wogan would have commented. She was by far the worst singing performer. Still, it must make all the contestants very happy about their own performances.

RhubarbIsEvil · 19/05/2019 08:35

If you want to use the Brexit theory for the UK’s poor performance then compare it to Germany. We scored 3 points in the public vote and Germany got 0. So look at it this way, maybe some people do like us and feel that the EU (aka Germany_) is being too hard line over Brexit? I say this as a staunch remainer BTW.

Anyway, Eurovision and The Olympics need to exclude politics so shame on you Madonna.

QueenOfTheAndals · 19/05/2019 08:38

Madge sounds great in the Met Gala clip posted upthread and that was only s year ago. Last night she sounded like she had a bad cold so maybe she felt under the weather but didn't want to cancel?

Sarcelle · 19/05/2019 08:38

I have seen Kate Bush sing live a few years back. Her voice is beautiful. Stevie Nicks too. I think Madonna has never had a great voice, like Kylie too. But their productions and spectacular staging detracted from that.

Now Madge is getting older, she has lost that edge, she now looks needy and desperate for attention. She could still have a career if she dropped the tedious styling and dance tunes.

I saw Martin Fry (ABC) sing a few weeks ago. He is around the same age as her, his voice was as strong and ABC soundings as normal.

funnylittlefloozie · 19/05/2019 08:39

All the people wittering about how ageist it us to criticise older women on stairs - Madonna CHOSE HER OWN FREAKING SET!!! She didn't need those stairs, she could have had anything else on the planet (and should have done).

It was quite a tragic performance all round, really.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 19/05/2019 08:45

She’s never claimed to be Barbra Streisand. Her singing was dreadful and seemed to get worse as she inched down those stairs.
But she’s all about the showmanship, and I think she’d be great in a small theatre.

81Byerley · 19/05/2019 08:45

I thought it was embarrassing...as was the chat with the presenter.

Alsohuman · 19/05/2019 08:46

Shirley Bassey is 82 and still sounds amazing.

DrinkReprehensibly · 19/05/2019 08:56

She didn't look or sound like she usually does. Even during the interview I thought "that's not Madonna". I can only assume she's had something done that has changed her voice or has a cold or something. I think the dozens of stairs plus eye patch was a bloody dangerous choice for a performer of any age!

buttery81 · 19/05/2019 08:57

I wonder if she’ll put out any sort of statement addressing the criticism or just ignore?

thegreatcrestednewt · 19/05/2019 09:05

How does autotune work?? Can anyone explain it?

HappyHammy · 19/05/2019 09:15

at least she kept her legs together

Fuckwheresitgone · 19/05/2019 09:19

It sounds like her timing is out , I wonder if there was a feedback issue? She's also running out of breath and at one point she has to stop to catch up, it's subtle but you can hear a discrepancy between the tune being a beat faster than she can sing to. At other times she's ahead of the tune. She's also sing-shouting which doesn't work for this song doesn't work for any songs, hate it when singers shout but singshout seems to be in vogue blame musical theatre myself.

BevfromPurchaseLedger · 19/05/2019 09:24

@WoollyMummoth

Dd commented that she hopes she doesn’t break a hip falling backwards seen as bones take a lot longer to heal now she’s nearly a pensioner

What a shitty thing for your DD to say. Fine to comment on the performance but why make nasty misogynistic and ageist comments about another woman?

Dungeondragon15 · 19/05/2019 09:39

There are some incredibly ageist comments on here. Most people don't lose their voice at 60. She just didn't have a great one in the first place. Her songwriting and ability to sell records made her famous rather than her voice. As for her walking down the steps like an 80 year old, I think anyone would have to be stupid not to be careful if they were wearing an eye patch and weren't used to it. I think she is actually very fit and probably could run a lot faster than a lot of the people suggesting she walks like an 80 year old.

DizzySue · 19/05/2019 09:39

Even in her hey day her voice was never truly amazing, her personality and showmanship made her an icon.

As a performer she is a shadow of her former self, I really wish she had bowed out of the limelight gracefully, this is just cringeworthy and desperate.

Obviously nobody had the guts to tell her honestly how awful she sounded, what a pity she ended up looking and sounding like a has-been.

eurochick · 19/05/2019 09:41

Oh blimey. I love Madonna but that was dreadful!

mindproject · 19/05/2019 10:22

She's a terrible singer now. She used to be above average. I think her mind is elsewhere.

She seems to be more interested in making her political/religious statement now. The whole staging/costume/lyrics were just freemason/satanic cult porn. So much blatant symbology,

The covering of the eye with a hand or patch represents the all seeing eye (eye of lucifer).

The X symbol (on her eyepatch and body) is the mark of the beast. It's everywhere nowadays - iPhone X, X factor, celebrities doing X signs with hands and arms. It represents merging man and machine - transhumanism. Also represented with their robot arm costumes they wore.

They carried masonic temple columns up the ascending stairs (masonic) at the beginning. Quite a few pyramid symbols flashing in the background.

Then she sang "Not everyone is coming to the future. Not everyone is going to last" while scenes of fire, destruction and the apocalypse played in the background with people around her wearing gas masks.

I could go on. So depressing. Wake up.

marvellousnightforamooncup · 19/05/2019 10:33

Illuminati confirmed! [snirk!]

mindproject · 19/05/2019 10:40

Snirk if you like. Most of Hollywood keeps referencing it. You start to ask yourself why? Is it just fashionable, or is it more sinister? I hope it's just a trend they'll all grow out of.

thecatsthecats · 19/05/2019 11:08

I've always found her performances weak (not a fan, so only catch them occasionally - I'm sure there are good ones, but the ones I've seen are never good).

Awkward, tryhard to be sexy/avant garde/whatever but coming across gauche and cringe instead (and - IMO - not very skillfully done, like someone who learned the moves but has no elan in performing them).

So last night just looked like a standard Madonna performance to me (going back over 20ish years of me occasionally seeing them). Not an especially good or bad one.

lljkk · 19/05/2019 11:15

Oh dear. I really am tone deaf. I thought she sounded fine just her voice is deeper than it used to be (natural process happens to women as we age).

mindproject · 19/05/2019 11:33

Well we could just discuss how bad a singer is now or how she has/hasn't aged well. Or, we could discuss the messages she is sending. I guess most people would rather stick with the former.

mouldyhousemouldylife · 19/05/2019 11:40

We are discussing a singer singing at a singing contest, it's hardly irrelevant. Hmm

Time40 · 19/05/2019 11:44

Oh just great - as soon as a 60-year-old singer sounds less than wonderful, everyone assumes she's too old and has lost it. It it were a 30-year-old singer, everyone would be wondering what went wrong technically.

Madonna can still sing the song. There were technical problems. It sounded as though she couldn't hear herself, at all.

The ageism on this thread is jaw-dropping.
