This is hideous

Then she needs a new sound engineer as she stopped being a good live singer more than a decade ago. The first one that comes to mind is a performance with Justin Timberlake in 2007, and every other performance I've seen since then has been dodgy...

mouldyhousemouldylife · 19/05/2019 11:46

And sounding 'completely shit' is not exactly 'less than wondefful'!

skunkatanka · 19/05/2019 11:50

Her problems were nothing to do with sound engineers. She was occasionally in tune which demonstrates that she could hear. As a singer, if you gave me just the first note I could sing the rest to you in tune. It's what singers do. There have been 26 competitors before her and several interval acts who all managed without much issue. The issue here was solely Madonna's ability as a singer.

MyFamilyAndOtherAnimals1 · 19/05/2019 11:52

It's completely out of tune!
...I wonder if she couldn't hear the backing track very well?

MitziK · 19/05/2019 11:55

As a live sound engineer, there's only so much you can do. Especially for performers with both age related and cumulative acquired hearing loss/tinnitus. Because you could feasibly turn it up to very, very loud but they still couldn't hear it, it would bleed through into the radio mics, it couldn't be balanced enough for them to be able to hear themselves and the backing/band is - and even if they can hear it, a lot of people have their balance affected by lots of surrounding noise. The last thing she needs is a stair/Cape related incident - the eyepatch was probably a very bad idea for a similar reason.

(unless it's hiding a cataract. They're common with people who spend lots of time in sunny places)

LarryGreysonsDoor · 19/05/2019 11:57

Many many singers still sound great as they get older. She was flat. That has nothing to do with age.

mindproject · 19/05/2019 12:01

She's not covering a cataract. The covering of one eye is occultist symbology. As was all the other stuff on the stage. Wake up, indeed.

Bluntness100 · 19/05/2019 12:02

t it were a 30-year-old singer, everyone would be wondering what went wrong technically

Actually that's not true. If someone sings badly live it's always called out
Irrelevant of age.

Madonna has never been a great singer. Her ability levels are in capturing rhe mood of the day and releasing songs that are popular, catchy, that people can sing along to, along with her sense of the dramatic, her performances, her videos. That's where her skill set lies.

There is no doubt at all that many songs Madonna has released are good songs, catchy and hugely popular because of it, and that capture the mood of the day.

I also wondered if she couldn't hear herself though, but ultimately if you're a singer with as many years experience as she has, you should be able to sing your own songs in tune.

I'm not sure if she gave too much to the actual performance in rehearsals , and focused less on the singing, resulting in what occurred, but I suspect she focused heavily on the choreography, the messaging, the staging, her outfit, her make up, the dancers outfits, and so little on the actual singing that it resulted in a poor singing performance.

Either way, I'm not sure she's waking up this morning to the reaction she expected.

callmeadoctor · 19/05/2019 12:06

Why is it ageist to say that Madonna sang out of tune? Here is Shirley Bassey at 74 bloody amazing!

callmeadoctor · 19/05/2019 12:09

Not forgetting Tom Jones!!!!

FiremanKing · 19/05/2019 12:11

Better performance here - watch to the end

callmeadoctor · 19/05/2019 12:11
(Im getting carried away now Grin
FiremanKing · 19/05/2019 12:15

Must see this -

FiremanKing · 19/05/2019 12:15

Sorry posted twice!

MargotLovedTom1 · 19/05/2019 12:19

I think Madonna's vocals were always best on slower songs: on Live To Tell her voice has some depth, and Don't Cry For Me, Argentina is lovely. I've never heard her singing them live though, so don't know how much is actually down to producers performing magic in the studio.

PurpleFlower1983 · 19/05/2019 12:22

Evita proved she could actually sing although the whole role was lowered for her register (which annoyed a lot of people). I thought she was great in that though.

TheAssemblywomen · 19/05/2019 12:25

It was dire and embarrassing to watch.

MargotLovedTom1 · 19/05/2019 12:26

DH went to see Tony Christie in concert at the height of Peter Kay/Is This The Way To Amarillo? renaissance. He was probably about 60 years old and his voice was utterly amazing. I bought the tickets in a semi-ironic fashion thinking it would be a fun, 70s inspired, cheesy night out, and he turned out to be one of the best live singers I've ever seen Grin.

MargotLovedTom1 · 19/05/2019 12:27

DH and I went, not just DH.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 19/05/2019 12:27

I agree with the principle (as i didnt watch it)

Tom jones is one i still think sounds great...paul mccartney sounds awful

Personally i think its down to the type of singing voice you have and whether you can ‘update’ your technique or singing style to cope with changes

mouldyhousemouldylife · 19/05/2019 12:28

Her problems were nothing to do with sound engineers

I was being sarcastic if this was in response to me Grin

Louisianna16 · 19/05/2019 12:32

The covering of one eye with an X eyepatch ,is in reference to her new album, and tour both called 'Madame X'.

PurpleFlower1983 · 19/05/2019 12:53

Agree she was never a great singer, but she’s always been fabulous at promoting herself and picking up on trends before everyone else. This is just embarrassing!

Justaboy · 19/05/2019 13:05

Her problems were nothing to do with sound engineers

You wouldn't belive what sound engineers can do today to make a silk scarf out of a sows song;!

skunkatanka · 19/05/2019 13:57

Oh I would justa believe me. My point is that SHE was singing out of tune. She wasn't doing so because she couldn't hear the backing as she clearly could. She clearly believed herself capable of singing the song live and was clearly wrong. Ego over ability.
