Radio 2 version, 2 hrs 56 minutes in. Can compare to the youtube channel version. it is more echoey than the youtube version. Do we complain if they removed echo for youtube version? Sounds deeper, more like a bathroom version I guess. And has more wobble than the youtube one, I think.

allworthwhile · 19/05/2019 23:13

This unedited version is horrific. Compare the first lines!

Sometimes I feel like I'm missing something the rest of the world can see. I am utterly baffled by Madonna's fame and success. I first saw her on TOTP writhing around singing "Like a Virgin" and just felt really embarrassed both by and for her. I have never changed my view. I don't think she looks great for her age, her face is frozen with surgery and fillers, her voice, always mediocre, is now dire, and what's more she's a graceless dancer.

I feel more than a little cross that we (the UK) pay a lot of money into Eurovision and a chunk of that will no doubt have gone towards the shitfest that was her performance.

Justaboy · 20/05/2019 00:15

I hate it when people come out with shit like that. Usually said about older women who "aren't dressing right" or should be better behaved at their age.
Balls to that.

Indeed! the older woman has a lot going for her. Now theres one here who plays paino, shes a few years short of 80! a lot say she gets better with age, some say she has magic in her hands, genius is oft mentioned, some say her hands are possed by a godess, well maybe a tad much but either way some also say one of the best pianists of our time?.

The fantastic Martha Argerich!!! in a concert here with a youth orchestra in Brazil..

Oh gosh. I watched the official VEVO vid on YouTube and was thinking “it wasn’t that bad... for Madonna” but they clearly cleaned it up because that is truly awful allworthwhile.

I too, have been bewildered by her success. Less triple threat, more triple meh. She can’t sing, she’s ungainly and resorts to a lot of chin thrusting when dancing and her acting is dire.

All she’s ever had was the shock value and an intractable belief in her own amazingness. It’s looking tired now. I don’t think it’s age per se, it’s just that’s she’s a one trick pony.

RageAgainstTheVendingMachine · 20/05/2019 06:09

fleas I thought an israeli millionaire paid for her?
For the record, I bloody love Madonna.
But that youtube video on her channel has been cleaned up within an inch of its life - she sounded nothing like that on Saturday.

skunkatanka · 20/05/2019 06:45

I'm slightly amused by the cleaning up and wondering whether Madonna requested it (thus knew she sounded awful) or whether the sound engineers just did it in order to protect the brand that is Madonna?? Either way, millions heard it live on the night and more on iplayer since. Not sure who they're trying to kid!

Sylvan Adams was the real estate miilionaire.

The slate article also has the accurate footage.

Dongdingdong · 20/05/2019 07:49

Not clever enough to reinvent herself as she goes along though which is what most enduring stars do.

Eh? Madonna is known as the queen of reinvention - and I’d say a 35-year career is pretty enduring.

She was awful on Eurovision though.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 20/05/2019 09:50

I thought an israeli millionaire paid for her?

Well I feel a lot better for knowing that, @RageAgainstTheVendingMachine. He may be demanding his money back - I would!

Moralitym1n1 · 20/05/2019 10:12

@RageAgainstTheVendingMachine

There are some brilliant MN usernames but that; is just fkg fantastic, Grin. First time seeing it.

HappydaysArehere · 20/05/2019 10:16

Just watched it on utube. The only thing that I can really say is that at least I can hear her voice whereas I have struggled to hear Beyoncé amidst the technical musical sounds that surround it.

BillGiggeloe · 20/05/2019 10:19

I'd rather watch Tasha Leaper doing her tribute than the real Madonna these days.

feelingverylazytoday · 20/05/2019 11:45

Grace Jones is another 'elderly' perforner who still puts on a great performance without embarassing herself. She's not a great singer but makes up for it in energy and stage presence.

Alsohuman · 20/05/2019 11:51

Grace Jones would have your head off for describing her as “elderly”! She’s ageless.

feelingverylazytoday · 20/05/2019 12:01

Also oh I know, thats why I put it in speech brackets. She's 71 now and still going strong.

JamieVardysHavingAParty · 20/05/2019 12:20

Honestly, I think the cracks about the steps are unjustified. I thought she was going for a slow, stately effect as she descended the stairs.

The two worst things were that tone-deaf me could hear her going off key, and her typical grandstanding in staging.

Gas masks, really?

Bluntness100 · 20/05/2019 12:30

Well from the way she keeps posting clips of her performance on Instagram I would hazard a guess Madonna doesn't give two tiny fucks who didn't like it. Which although I thought the performance poor is an attitude I respect.

And interestingly she seems to mainly do her own Instagram, based on the selfie videos of her going to sleep or her kids etc that she keeps posting. For many of them you can see they have someone else do it. It's just official snaps and nothing personal. Emily blunt is one of these. But Madonna I suspect is doing some of it at least on her own based on the sheer volume of inane personal shite she posts on there. I'm sure she has someone else also doing it, but there is no doubt she also posts her own stuff herself on there.

SirVixofVixHall · 20/05/2019 15:30

I have my diary entry somewhere, from her first UK appearance, a short thing to promote her, at the Camden Palace. She sang three songs, bounced around a lot, but the singing was shrill and awful. I mention that we saw a “really crap American singer called Madonna” ...!
I have been baffled by her huge success, I can only put it down to to a combination of ruthless drive, hard work and timing.

KittensinaBlender · 20/05/2019 15:55

And interestingly she seems to mainly do her own Instagram

Narcissism and control freakery. To be far it’s been a winning combo in terms of her career.

MissUGirl · 20/05/2019 16:39

@Patroclus Auto-Tune can certainly be used live. There is a dedicated plugin for that purpose.

Patroclus · 20/05/2019 16:55

Yeah I know but it sounds crap and blatant.

Patroclus · 20/05/2019 16:56

This lad autotuned their cat.

She’s certainly known for having an unbelievably high work ethic - and is said to be extremely charismatic. She also comes across as very articulate and smart in her interviews from the 1980s/90s IMO. I haven’t really followed her career in more recent years.
