Danny Baker: Standing ovation at first show since Twitter storm www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-nottinghamshire-48249637

What is wrong with people. He showed his true inherent racism but people still believe he's a top bloke!

OP posts:
RiversDisguise · 13/05/2019 11:56

who are the "white Cambridge children"?

LaraLily90 · 13/05/2019 11:57

Let’s be honest, looking at how pale MM is, the baby isn’t exactly going to end up being dark is he? Meghan does look more tanned than of mixed heritage and so the baby will probably not even look like his grandmother is black

SoupDragon · 13/05/2019 11:58

I also feel a bit sorry for Danny Baker. I don’t know his motivations and I can see why people saw the tweet as racist, but from what I know of DB, it seems like a very foolish mistake.

Except he didn't apologise profusely did he? Didn't he just get all defensive?

NoSauce · 13/05/2019 12:01

What’s your point here? The fact remains he is of mixed race whether he looks dark or not Hmm

Scarcelyburnt · 13/05/2019 12:01

Peardrops: I couldn't agree with you more.

I do wonder about the mindset of those excusing Danny's tweet.

Racism is alive and well, especially unconscious bias and people wilfully ignoring the massive impact this has on black, Asian and other ethnic minorities. Who cares about their feelings, eh? What matters is poor Danny. Ethnic minorities can't win. Even when they are the victims of these horrendous behaviours, the perpetrator turns it to be all about them and their poor feelings.

Pieceofpurplesky · 13/05/2019 12:02

To all the posters who say they don't read articles on the royal family, didn't know MM was black and didn't watch the wedding. If you knew there was a wedding you are aware of her colour - absolute bollocks that you don't. To the PP whose sons would not know - if they use the Internet they will. Ignorance is not an excuse for racism.

Pieceofpurplesky · 13/05/2019 12:03

@LaraLily90 you do know how genetics work don't you?

ShatnersWig · 13/05/2019 12:04

@NoSauce That's Nigel Farage who married a German woman and who despite all his bluster and bollocks made sure his kids have German passports for their freedom of movement. Hypocrite and racist yet so many people continue to listen to him like he's the Second Messiah. Almost every word he utters is a lie.

Lifecraft · 13/05/2019 12:04

Again, a ridiculous statement. I’m a total republican, but that doesn’t equate to not knowing who anyone in the royal family is, especially when it has been such a recent news piece. There is no correlation between ‘don’t like royal family’ and ‘completely ignorant of all media to do with royal family’.

Good for you. But regardless of that, anyone saying "every UK adult knows who MM is" is deluded. And anyone saying "everyone knows she's mixed race" is also deluded.

I knew, you may have known, Danny Baker may have known, but thousands, maybe hundreds of thousands of UK adults will have no idea.

Jarstastic · 13/05/2019 12:05

He said he didn’t know whose baby it was. Yet the day before he had tweeted a picture of the parents in game about the baby’s name. His contribution was Homer Wallis Simpson.

HBStowe · 13/05/2019 12:06

No sauce....Im sorry your 13 year old made that connection. That's quite a shame. I showed it to my 13 year old, and he didn't.

This is interesting because personally I would be horrified if I had brought up a child this oblivious to the realities of racism. Black children don’t have the luxury of growing up oblivious to the ways in which they are abused by racists, and if you want your son to be a good ally, and someone who challenges racism where he sees it, you’re going to need to teach him not to be so oblivious.

ChocChocButtons · 13/05/2019 12:07

He’s not a racist, He made a stupid mistake. It was thoughtless and he shouldn’t of done it but he’s not racist.

justarandomtricycle · 13/05/2019 12:07

It might not prove anything, but I had no thoughts of the Duchess of Sussex's ethnicity before this debacle, I think I might have been vaguely aware at some point in the past? But it would not have occurred to me in anything I said about her, if I was prone to edgy comments like DB is I can see how I might have made such a mistake?

Wouldn't have happened to me because I think they're a lovely couple and am thrilled at their news, and some of the racism around at the moment is awful, but I do think it's possible not to have been that aware.

Thymeout · 13/05/2019 12:08

Crispbutty Why on earth do you think DB is lying when he says he doesn't have a mobile phone? It just shows how little you know about him. It's always been a thing with him. I remember one of his radio shows when he was briefly tempted by an ap which Beylon showed him using a phone as a musical keyboard. But he decided it wasn't worth it.

Of course he knows about racism in football. He's spoken up about it before. But when he sees a chimp he doesn't immediately think 'oooh racist'. It is possible for things to have more than one connotation.

I don't have a smart phone. You can use other devices for Twitter, you know.

NoSauce · 13/05/2019 12:11

He’s not a racist, He made a stupid mistake. It was thoughtless and he shouldn’t of done it but he’s not racist

Even though he tweeted a racist photo?

DoneLikeAKipper · 13/05/2019 12:11

But regardless of that, anyone saying "every UK adult knows who MM is" is deluded. And anyone saying "everyone knows she's mixed race" is also deluded.

Sorry, I’ll correct myself. Everyone adult in the UK knows who Meghan Markle is, unless they live in a cave or are deliberately ignorant of all current affairs/popular culture/big news items.

SoupDragon · 13/05/2019 12:13

Why on earth do you think DB is lying when he says he doesn't have a mobile phone? It just shows how little you know about him. It's always been a thing with him.

Christmas 2015 he tweeted that he now had one.

RiversDisguise · 13/05/2019 12:13

Lol... but they are irrelevant to a lot of people. I

Prince William visited my country to patronise some poor fuckers at the mosque down my street on ANZAC Day. If I hadn't had an argument with a tit of a policeman who tried to bar me from going home, I wouldn't have known. That family are a joke and an irrelevance to most normal people.

My husband is English. Don't know if he knows who Meghan is. I would not be surprised if he hadn't until this past week or so.

Scarcelyburnt · 13/05/2019 12:16

Remember Ron Atkinson? He portrayed himself to be anti-racism but all the while he was a closet racist.

People like Danny pretend to be on the right side of the moral argument but deep down harbour these abhorrent views. Only some people will be fooled.

His mask slipped. He won't be the first one to get caught out and for people to see what really lies deep within his mind.

RiversDisguise · 13/05/2019 12:17

Do the royals count as popular culture? I tend to think of music, TV and films by that term.

They are certainly not news in the way that, say, the gilets jaunes are.

Thymeout · 13/05/2019 12:20

Sorry, Soupdragon. Does he use it? My cousin was given one for Xmas so she could be part of the family Whatsap group, but doesn't like it. I heard DB say the other day that everyone in the industry knows he doesn't use one.

Suiker · 13/05/2019 12:20

I also feel a bit sorry for Danny Baker. I don’t know his motivations and I can see why people saw the tweet as racist, but from what I know of DB, it seems like a very foolish mistake.

Except he didn't apologise profusely did he? Didn't he just get all defensive?

Not immediately, no, he handled it badly. But it doesn't negate my assessment of his foolishness.

NoSauce · 13/05/2019 12:20

Remember Ron Atkinson?
Yes he made out that he’d never used such a phrase before. Like anyone would believe that. Won’t quote what he said but there’s no way somebody would talk like that who wasn’t racist.

SoupDragon · 13/05/2019 12:21

Anyone withinnocent intentions would have just gone "Shit! I'm so sorry, I didn't think".

TabbyMumz · 13/05/2019 12:23

HbStowe....I'm pleased he didn't make that connection. I think it's a horrible connection. Posters on here say it's been used and well known for hundreds of years, but I'd never heard of it. I'm not the odd one out here either, as we were discussing this in work and lots of colleagues didn't make the connection and thought it strange. If it has been used in the past, it's a connection people need to be stamping out, not referring to it constantly.
