Danny Baker: Standing ovation at first show since Twitter storm www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-nottinghamshire-48249637

What is wrong with people. He showed his true inherent racism but people still believe he's a top bloke!

peardrops1 · 14/05/2019 16:02

This thread is agonising. Why are some people bending over backwards to claim it wasn't racist? ANYONE WITH HALF A BRAIN CAN SEE IT WAS RACIST. Jesus, people!

peardrops1 · 14/05/2019 16:06

Also, is it coincidence that the classic, hilarious 'I don't see colour' argument always seems to come from white people? Well yeah, of course you don't see colour - systemic racism doesn't affect you, so you never need to be aware of colour. How lovely for you.

Pgqio · 14/05/2019 16:09

I've been a fan of Danny for about 30 years and have read all his books, I still don't think he's racist, just an unthinking arse.

The desperation for people to be vilified for social media gaffes has got out of hand. This is the sort of thing that drives people to suicide.

Racist or otherwise he's apologised and can't do much else, people need to back off now.

Scarcelyburnt · 14/05/2019 17:48

Suiker, but he said he normally uses it for these sorts of occasions. There have been at least 6 other such occasions in the last 6 years.

Suiker · 14/05/2019 18:06

He didn’t actually say that! Or at least what he said doesn’t necessarily match your interpretation. He said he had a “go to” image for when posh people are born. That doesn’t mean royals, doesn’t mean he posts on twitter about it, it could be an image he has in his mind, it could mean all sorts of things

SpanishFly · 14/05/2019 18:18

suiker as I said earlier, re the tweet and the sample pool -
No, it's actually not the same as that example - it's more like saying that he could have been selected many times, but was only chosen once. So a possible chance of 7, but it only happened once.

Scarcelyburnt · 14/05/2019 18:34

Suiker, we're going round in circles. We'll show me where he has used it for posh babies or even posh people.

Nevertheless the question still stands. There were 6 previous situations where he could have used his so-called go-to photos but he never did. What was do special about this occasion that he decided to whip out his so-called go to analogy? Out of 7 recent posh births he decided this one fitted his go-to gag, not the previous 6.

Scarcelyburnt · 14/05/2019 18:36

And context matters. When challenged he made it seem like for occasions similar to this, he uses his monkey theme. So there were 6 others before. He should be able to prove that this is just par for the course.

Lifecraft · 14/05/2019 20:36

Standards of proof for guilt to be established:

Criminal court - beyond reasonable doubt
Civil Court- on the balance of probabilities
Social Media - I've never liked him/he looks dodgy/everyone else says he's guilty and I don't want to be on the unpopular side so I'll jump on the bandwagon (delete as applicable)

Punishments for guilt:

Criminal court - a fine, or possibly a custodial sentence, maybe suspended
Civil Court- damages to be paid to winner
Social Media - The complete ruination of your life.

Forgetting about Danny baker for a minute, but in general, I'm not 100% convinced that this is the direction a civilised society should go in.

RiversDisguise · 14/05/2019 20:40

Of course it's a terrible direction. But people are happy for other people's lives to go down the toilet over a tweet because it's not them.

It always reminds me of that poem which begins, "First they came for the communists..."

NannaNoodleman · 14/05/2019 20:49

Disagreeing that he deserved a standing ovation is quite different from wishing total ruination of his life.

He's a privileged white male, he'll be fine!

Maybe pen a new poem...
"First they disagreed that casual racism is ok, and I agreed because I'm not a racist"

OP posts:
Scarcelyburnt · 14/05/2019 20:53

Yet if this was about a white woman having her knees touched or someone making a sexist comment aimed at a white woman, all hell would break loose. But racism, who cares about a little casual racism, eh?

Kazzz65 · 14/05/2019 20:53

Blatant racism and all those who believe he didn't realise it are as daft as he is... He knew full well what he was doing. As someone of mixed race I think it's disgusting, it reminds me of all the overt racism in the 1980's,a backward step imo.

TheGardenFairy · 14/05/2019 21:05

*The "I don't see or notice colour or that someone is mixed-race, black, Asian" is just downright ridiculous and insulting. How can you not see something so fundamental to a person and their identity?

Not seeing someone's race is deliberately trying to ignore who they are, their experiences and their future experiences. How can we ever move forward when there are people who want to literally ignore others' identity?

There is nothing wrong in seeing the colour of a person's skin or acknowledging their race. The problem is using the colour of their skin or race to denigrate them or say they are less than. It's not their race or skin colour that's the problem so why try to make them the problem by pretending they are invisible?

When will all this nonsense stop*

👏👏👏 Well said!

I have 3 mixed race children. The number of people who skirt around the issue of them being black is insane! My children used to become extremely embarrassed when their friends tried to excuse their blatant racism when speaking, in a derogatory manner, about people of another race - usually black - and then come out with, "I didn't mean you. You are not black. You are mostly white so you are one of us". What's so fucking great about being white??? Now my children simply say, "I'm black. I don't have a problem with that. Do you??

It's like when people say, "I don't care what colour his skin is. He could be pink with purple spots. It doesn't bother me" 🙄🙄🙄

OP that "comedian" is a racist twat! He deserved to lose his job. I've yet to find out why his tweet was meant to be funny 🤷‍♀️

Lifecraft · 14/05/2019 21:14

OP that "comedian" is a racist twat! He deserved to lose his job.

He's not a comedian! You know nothing about him, do you? Yet you've labelled him a racist twat based on one tweet in a 44 year career, a career that's included the promotion of black music and artists and attacking racism in football. A tweet that he claims has been misinterpreted and not meant in the way it's been taken.

Well done you.

TheGardenFairy · 14/05/2019 21:20

Lifecraft.

I agree Danny Baker is not a comedian. He just fancies himself as one. He's not funny at all - and never has been. What's your point?

.. to be disappointed that a racist received a standing ovation!
Lifecraft · 14/05/2019 21:28

My point is Danny Baker is not a comedian. That's not his job. Never has been. He would never claim to be. Regardless of what the Evening Standard says.

I'm guessing he would've described himself as a journalist, perhaps a broadcaster.

I guess it's largely irrelevant now...he's unemployed.

Pgqio · 14/05/2019 21:41

"He's a privileged white male he'll be fine"

That's a disgusting thing to say op. Do you think white men are immune to internet vilification and the mental health problems it causes?

Seriously, you're an appalling person for implying that.

TheGardenFairy · 14/05/2019 21:42

I guess it's largely irrelevant now...he's unemployed

As he should be... His "jokes" are about as funny as Piers Morgan on a bad day.

Scarcelyburnt · 14/05/2019 21:51

Pointing to his white male privilege and the fact that the cult of white male privilege will protect him is disgusting? Really? His white male privilege is the reason why many are bending over backwards to gloss over his racist abuse of a mixed-race woman and her child.

Poor Danny Baker. The problem is with the people standing up to racism not the racist. After all his best friend is black and he has said a lot of nice things in the past about black people. So what if his mask slipped and he racially abuse a mixed-race woman and her 2 day old baby? All of this should be swept under the carpet because he said some nice things in the past. Those bloody ungrateful ethnic minorities. How dare they not show gratitude for the nice things I've said about them in the past? What next? Will we be subjected to the "oh and did I forget to say my best friend is black and I dated a black woman in the past? How can I possibly be racist?"

SomethingOnce · 14/05/2019 21:53

The "I don't see or notice colour or that someone is mixed-race, black, Asian" is just downright ridiculous and insulting. How can you not see something so fundamental to a person and their identity?

How do you know it’s fundamental to every single person and their identity? Some people aren’t that into ‘identity’ and for others ethnicity isn’t fundamental.

Pgqio · 14/05/2019 21:54

White guys commit suicide quite frequently, being white and male doesn't protect you from that funnily enough. So yes, appalling.

LimeKiwi · 14/05/2019 22:00

I'm guessing he would've described himself as a journalist, perhaps a broadcaster.

Exactly!! Journalist. Broadcaster. If you didn't know which Princess gave birth, or her heritage, you are absolutely talking out of your arse lol.
Maybe he was unthinking and thought "Oh shit!" when pointed out (giving benefit of doubt) but even if he was unthinking it shows white privilege.
Cos he doesn't have to think about it.
Probably wouldn't have occurred to me much when a lot younger Blush

Scarcelyburnt · 14/05/2019 22:07

Pgpio, I guess you do not know about the stats for suicide amongst black people and the mental health issues that they suffer because of casual racism. Day in and day out. But hey, all that matters to you is the white men and the harm they suffer when they are called out for their racism.

Go look at mental health issues amongst minorities because of racism and unconscious bias. You think Danny's joke has no consequences and no victims?

White privilege means ignore others and focus just on the feelings of whites. The feelings of non-white are secondary even when they are the victims. The racist feelings matter more.

Pgqio · 14/05/2019 22:09

Enjoy your pitch fork waving witch hunt keyboard warrior nonsense, I'm out.
