To ask if you remember the days when we didn't have to get our feet summer ready

It got warm, we slipped on our Jesus sandals (sometimes with our tights on) and greeted summer.
Maybe we'd paint our toe nails but there was no pressure to file away at our feet, put on some heel cream, buy a Footner.
We weren't shamed by our yellowing heels - they were just part of our wonderful feet that performed the miraculous feat (😊) of carrying us around decade after decade.

I just cut my toenails. My feet are fine. I do have two sideways little toes though (from ballet I think)1

I get dry skin on my hands but that’s because they are exposed to air, and ink. My feet live in cotton socks and comfy flat shoes 90% of the year. Heels are strictly for special occasions like weddings and sandals probably get worn for 2 weeks of the year.

I had a pedicure once before my wedding and I hated it. The foot buffer thing was so painful!

thelastgoldeneagle · 12/05/2019 21:36

I have a chiropodist appt every year to get rid of any hard skin etc., then regular pedis. Feet are so important!

PookieDo · 12/05/2019 21:37

noticing someone has unpleasant feet is all on me. I’m shallow - I judge them on their foot health and hygiene. I wouldn’t do it myself. I wouldn’t want them walking barefoot in my house. I wouldn’t really like them walking around the pool on holiday. But for the sake of the persons feelings I wouldn’t say anything to them. I don’t think it’s necessary to let it get that bad. I’ve said all this already so what is your point? That it’s everyone’s right to have whatever feet they choose? It sure is. Just not my choice and I don’t like it much. It’s painful and uncomfortable and doesn’t seem pleasant. People do have medical conditions but also people don’t value it very highly (as seen here) as they think it’s something vain, unimportant and frivolous all created by an industry trying to sell us rubbish we don’t need
My feet do look nice but I am also confident they are healthy feet Wine

TotHappy · 12/05/2019 21:49

Is this what you lot mean by dry cracked heels?? I've always had it, pumice doesn't get rid, it's not painful! I just don't wear shoes much and go barefoot even outside. It's hard yep but no pain? Just a callous?

PookieDo - you're scaring me with your foot fetish. Please stop!

JustCallMeSliths · 12/05/2019 21:58

@TotHappy - they look dry but fine. Cracks are where the skin has spilt. You know when soil goes hard and cracks. It's just like that. It bloody hurts.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 12/05/2019 21:59

I have to go to a chiropodist for a regular seeing to now

Ooh er missus Grin

I am an NHS Podiatrist (used to be known as Chiropodist before HCP name changes )

Can I just say m I have NEVER given ir wanted to give ANY of my patients a "seeing to" Wink . Ok , now we've cleared that up !

Put some cream on your feet . Your heels take your entire body weight every step. Your heel touches the ground first (unless you are wearing Heeleys - my pet hate ) . Especially open back sandles , its a fissuring waiting to happen.

I do look at people's feet when I'm out and about )occupational hazard not some weirdy perversion Grin )
Sometimes on the escalator or walking behind someone slowly in a queue it is all I can do not to shake their shoulders and shriek For the Love of God , look at your heels . Get some bloody cream and a file ............but I don;t because I'm not weird (much)

TotHappy · 12/05/2019 22:00

Ah, thank you! The top layer of skin has fissures in mine but it's obviously only the dry callous that's split, it never bleeds or anything (unless I pick it...)

LunaTheCat · 12/05/2019 22:03

I think looking after feet is good. They do a lot of work for us! Take us to great places, let us run and walk and breathe in good air.
They deserve pampering and good shoes. Thickened cracked skin and nails broken off is a risk factor for infection - just one small bug needs to get in one of those deep cracks and you are in trouble!
Treasure your feet and paint your toenails - they do a lot work for you.

lazylinguist · 12/05/2019 22:04

I don't get any of myself 'summer ready'. It's a load of sexist bollocks. I am trying to get fitter and lose weight, but that's for general health purposes, not because I'm thinking about what I'd look like in a bikini (I don't wear bikinis).

tor8181 · 12/05/2019 22:04

as a 38 y old woman ive never got my legs or feet summer ready and yes i do wear shorts(never had a comment on why i dont shave, men dont so why should i)

i dont shave anything and havent since i was 13/14 as i got severe PCOS and say i shaved in the morning it would be back by the evening

and i havent been able to wear ladies shoes since i was about 9/10

i only wear trainers as im a mans size 12(13 if they are small )

as at 11/12 i was that shoe size above

ive never had bad feet tbh anyway as i look after them as part of my beauty routine(hair masks, diy facials a few times a week)

PookieDo · 12/05/2019 22:04

@RevokeRemainpastcaringreally

I feel like I am taking the flack for what is for a lot of people otherwise a relatively normal part of life! I will leave it there. No foot fetish. Seems ok for other people to say the same thing (see podiatrist) but not me.

RevokeRemainpastcaringreally · 12/05/2019 22:11

@70isaLimitNotaTarget - I'm right to warn 'em about fallen arches, aren't I? I'm a martyr to my knees because of 'em. A martyr.

Ooh, I enjoy having painted toenails, but the poster who described it as a hobby is absolutely right.

However, I'm surprised how many people have said they use moisturizer on their feet- is that all over? As my skin would probably end up being ripped off by shoes if I did that (speaking from experience here!).

PookieDo · 12/05/2019 22:16

Am I allowed to respond?
You put it on when you don’t have shoes on
So before bed or after a shower. The tops of my feet and ankles get really dry so I sleep with it on
Shoes and moisturiser do not go well at the same time 😂

Stormy76 · 12/05/2019 22:17

I was born in the summer of 76 which was apparently a very hot summer 😊 I normally go for a pedi once a year in the summer so that the hard work is all done and then I maintain for the rest of the summer .......winter I don’t do anything except moisturise my feet occasionally.

TheSmallClangerWhistlesAgain · 12/05/2019 22:17

I realised this week that a fungal nail infection I've been trying to get rid of for years has cleared up by itself. I have a healthyish middle toe for the first time in about 8 years.

WorraLiberty · 12/05/2019 22:20

I also think cracked heels is kind of age dependent.

I only started to get dry/cracked heels in my late 40s.

I can't help thinking if I had taken better care of them (or given them any care at all) when I was younger, I may not have such a problem now.

Can anyone recommend a really good cream for cracked heels please?

Topseyt · 12/05/2019 22:28

I cannot be arsed with any of this "summer ready" shit.

So I am summer ready all year round. I just put my sandals on when the weather permits and that is that.

CheshireChat · 12/05/2019 22:36

PookieDo that's what I did though! Moisturiser and shoes mixed together sound like a recipe for a twisted ankle!

But whilst I had lovely soft skin like a newborn's bottom it was about as sensitive and useless for doing any actual walking. I've not moisturised since.

Titsywoo · 12/05/2019 22:41

I don't do much to my feet. I don't have dry or cracked heels though. If I ever get a bit of rough skin there I just file it off. I paint my toenails once at the start of summer and that lasts me until Sept (my toenails don't seem to grow very fast!).

Echobelly · 12/05/2019 22:42

Never done anything to my feet, never painted my toenails.

I tend to stick to comfortablish shoes due to an orthopaedic issue, so I don't have foot problems associated with high heels, pointy toes or anything like that, so my feet look okayish, other than my toes which are messy as I can't easily reach them due to issue mentioned above.

I don't really do anything for summer in fact, other than moving to shaving my legs every week rather than every couple of weeks.

Alsohuman · 12/05/2019 22:45

Flexitol @Worral. Massage it in when you get into bed.

WorraLiberty · 12/05/2019 22:48

Thanks Alsohuman

Dotty1970 · 12/05/2019 23:08

KneelJustKneel

Dotty - beacuse they fancied weaekng sandals? Beacuse they're not wearing sandals to show yuou their feet but beacuse they like them/want to feel cooler than in shoes?

Really does everyone have to look asceticly pleasing to be allowed to wear or do certain things!?

.........
I understand what your saying here, I do, however I still think really disgusting feet should be for the owners eyes only due to the affect it can have on others 🤮.
I have to wear shoes/trainers when I haven't sorted my feet even when I want cool feet... but I don't want people to see so I don't..
