To ask if you remember the days when we didn't have to get our feet summer ready

It got warm, we slipped on our Jesus sandals (sometimes with our tights on) and greeted summer.
Maybe we'd paint our toe nails but there was no pressure to file away at our feet, put on some heel cream, buy a Footner.
We weren't shamed by our yellowing heels - they were just part of our wonderful feet that performed the miraculous feat (😊) of carrying us around decade after decade.

the most I do to my feet is the odd foot bath when I have had a rough day, what am I meant to be doing to them?

(To be fair I don't do eyebrows either, or shave, or wear make up, or straighten my hair etc so lots of these threads are a mystery to me)

PookieDo · 12/05/2019 18:09

It is not a made up routine to rid yourself of hard skin, put moisturiser on and cut your nails

You can go further with nail polish if you want, I would suggest it’s not a made up fad either seen as probably millions if not billions of nail polish is sold every year

KnobZombie7 · 12/05/2019 18:13

Processedpea, I'm confused

It wasn't that hot years ago was it ? I never really wore sandals

Do you not think summers were hot enough for sandals here years ago?

anothernotherone · 12/05/2019 18:13

PookieDo cutting your toe nails comes under hygiene but the rest is a hobby, unless you have a dermatological condition in which case obviously it's medical.

derxa · 12/05/2019 18:15

I have to go to a chiropodist for a regular seeing to now. My nails are thick and heels cracked due to wellie wearing at lambing time. DH says I need to go to the cattle chiropodist. To the relief of all I never bare my feet in public.

PookieDo · 12/05/2019 18:15

It’s not a hobby. So if you had dry hands you would forgo moisturiser?

DefConOne · 12/05/2019 18:19

I manage to paint my toe nails when the weather forecast is good. We live near the coast and hit the beach as soon as it hits 20 degrees and the sand sorts out the exfoliation for me.

PookieDo · 12/05/2019 18:22

I think AIBU is not an accurate representation. People love to be awkward and I cannot believe people are that innocent that they have no idea people might look after their feet Hmm or that it’s shallow to do so. It can be really uncomfortable and painful. I’ve seen a chiropodist before when I had a very bad ingrown toenail - I don’t want that to happen again and I just take a bit more care with them. They are your feet, it’s not about what they look like it’s whether they are fit for purpose! Some dry skin is pretty normal but same as hands - you use them a lot, you probably try to prevent them getting too damaged because it’s not nice to be uncomfortable.

I don’t shave my legs much though, as it has not much purpose to do so. Looking after hands and feet does to me

bananasandwicheseveryday · 12/05/2019 18:22

My feet are only ever 'hobbit hole' ready. At best.

Itwouldtakemuchmorethanthis · 12/05/2019 18:22

My heels just don’t crack or have anything that needs grating. Surely if you shower/bath normally it’s the same as a foot bath??? I honestly have no idea what I would DO to my feet?

RevokeRemainpastcaringreally · 12/05/2019 18:27

Ooh er missus Grin

DH says I need to go to the cattle chiropodist

That's sweet!

My heels get a bit dry- dunno why. It wouldn't really occur to me to do much with them. Having said that- my horse has this lovely hoof moisturizer stuff- I might slap a bit of that on when I'm next down the yard - he uses my suncream, so...

Otterses · 12/05/2019 18:29

My feet look like they belong to a well traveled hobbit regardless of how much effort I put into them Grin

anothernotherone · 12/05/2019 18:31

PookieDo I've only had dry hands when washing them extremely frequently when I had multiple small children still in nappies. Cracked skin becomes a medical issue under certain circumstances but normally hands and feet look after themselves beyond washing and cutting nails. Lots of people - mainly women - spend vast amounts of time on money on lotions and potions, routines and manicures and pedicures and waxing and plucking all sorts of other stuff, but it's a hobby except for a few people with medical conditions.

ChodeofChodeHall · 12/05/2019 18:32

I keep mine nice all year round. Much easier than neglecting them all Winter and then trying to get them 'presentable' for sandals.

I rarely notice other people's feet/toenails but I enjoy mine being well groomed.

I just moisturise them a couple of times a week when I get out of the bath, and sort the nails out every few weeks.

I find it cheering to see pretty toes when I look down. Never mind everyone else's!

Imustbemad00 · 12/05/2019 18:32

This thread is a god send. I really need foot advice.

My heels are really bad. Dry and hard. I’m going on holiday in 10 days. How can I sort them?

I’ve never done anything to them in my life. I bought a pumice stone a few weeks back. Tried to get into a routine with that but it was a faff and didn’t seem to be working so I gave up.

IAmTheChosenOne · 12/05/2019 18:33

I don't understand the concept of 'summer ready' , I've always had good grooming, it has never been season dependent.

ChodeofChodeHall · 12/05/2019 18:36

IAmTheChosenOne - my thoughts exactly. Some people only seem to start thinking about grooming when they think someone else is looking at them!

ChodeofChodeHall · 12/05/2019 18:38

IMustBeMad - I can recommend Newton's Chiropody Sponge (from Superdry or pound shop). It's much quicker and more effective than a pumice stone.

LadyRannaldini · 12/05/2019 18:39

I don't do anything to my feet other than cut my nails

Me neither, I tend to be barefoot most of the year unless it's really foul outside, as a student I was always barefoot round the campus and had skin like an elephant!
Does anyone know why one's toenails grown faster in Summer or is it just mine??

Oblomov19 · 12/05/2019 18:42

I don't bother either. I don't get 'beach ready'.

derxa · 12/05/2019 18:44

Yes Revoke he's a right charmer Hmm Grin

PookieDo · 12/05/2019 18:44

The problem with pumice is that if you go too far with it the skin will get harder to protect the foot so you don’t expect it to be baby bum smooth. Exfoliate gently when they are wet and get a really good intense moisture foot cream and wear that to bed at night
I like this one but peppermint ones are nice as they are also refreshing

ohtheholidays · 12/05/2019 18:45

I remember those times OP,it was in the early 80's for me but the reason I didn't worry was because I never had the hard skin on my heels back then.

I don't what's happened to my feet the last few years(I'm in my 40's now)but I'm bloody making up for it now.

I sort my feet out a few times a week though because I hate the thought of my DH going to give me a foot rub and finding that part of my foot feels like it's made on concrete, that or even worse I rub my foot up his leg in bed and end up making him look like he's gone 10 rounds with Edward Scissorhands.

PookieDo · 12/05/2019 18:53

Mine is shoe choices - not always very sensible Blush
My DD’s don’t wear sandals very much maybe only occasionally flip flops and their feet are lovely and soft.
I wear hard bottomed sandals and I also have a tendency to walk in the garden barefoot
Hard skin gets dirtier no? I struggle to clean my feet easily if there is a lot of hard skin. A few years ago I would walk home shoe less from a night out and wake up with rock hard tarmac coloured feet. I went to a festival once and couldn’t get my feet clean if mud for days!
