....to think that this is a new low in the Meghan Markle Debacle

Up to now I've been fairly neutral about Harry and Meghan. I'm not a royalist, im a bit of a republican, but I like to see what the royals are up to, and like a royal wedding. The family rows, extravagant baby shower, all the rumours....I believe in giving people the benefit of the doubt, i was pretty indifferent. And i liked the way she was shaking up the royal family.
However, this sickened me a bit. Using an instagram post supposed to benefit mental health charities to flog her rich mate's £900 a night hotel/retreat. Its such a blatantly tasteless and crass thing to do I think its shocking. Welcome the new Fergie.

It seems like people’s concern, and not Daily Mail concern but maybe actual concern, springs from the fact that they assumed that all accounts highlighted would be non-profits dedicated to mental health. In fact, of the 16 accounts, only eight are dedicated non-profit orgs. Of the rest... Two are personal accounts. Two are for online movements run by individuals which could mean anything in terms of profit vs non-profit - there’s no oversight yet for them. Four are for-profit businesses (including the Instagrams for Talkspace which has varying costs, Headspace which costs £300 for a lifetime membership, “The Class” by Taryn Toomey which costs min. $35 for class and are only in the US, and Oprah’s SuperSoul Sundays which are exclusively on her TV network). I think to some people that matters and some people probably don’t care at all.

As for me personally? No opinion. I do think it’s very deliberate wording that they NEVER used the words “non-profit” about the organizations they were following for the month. “Strength,” “kindness,” “global support,” “amazing work,” but never “non-profit”... all just PR language.

asdou · 12/05/2019 20:11

It's like her team want her to be some sort of global brand. Maybe that will earn her income, but for now, it's the royal purse that's paying her overheads....

RightYesButNo · 12/05/2019 20:12

Oh, but to be clear, YABU - no, this is not some “low” for MM. Either you blame both her and her husband for running the account OR you accept that their PR is running the account, which is most likely.

Bookworm4 · 12/05/2019 20:13

It's corrupt and shouldn't be allowed
Possibly the most ridiculous thing I've read today. Who actually gives a fuck what they post online, there's no law against it.
Calm down you absolute roaster. 🙄

asdou · 12/05/2019 20:14

Well MM hired her PR team......... Harry certainly didn't. Not sure they would have been the Queen's choice either......

She's not doing herself favours here. I think she should move to the US where she might be more revered than here..

Someoneonlyyouknow · 12/05/2019 20:15

@RightYesButNo
Thank you. I looked at all 16 but didn't count. Just realised that several were not charities.
I also tried a couple if clicks on the offending link and couldn't find how to sign up for the expensive retreat so don't think it's that obvious?

asdou · 12/05/2019 20:15

What's a roaster Bookworm? Grin Not one I've heard before.....

SamanthaBrique · 12/05/2019 20:15

I think YANBU with the point you raise OP but YABU to refer to the "Markle Debacle". It seems no matter what she does, people look to find fault and are keen to think the worst of her.

ElspethFlashman · 12/05/2019 20:17

I think they're trying to be a cross between the Beckhams and Oprah. The Beckhams in terms of that husband-and-wife-global-brand, and Oprah for that New Age Holistic Positivity Energy Rah Rah Empowerment vibe.

PortiaCastis · 12/05/2019 20:17

Joint IG account isn't it so why blame just one of the holders

asdou · 12/05/2019 20:18

I don't think any of us here wrote the articles Samantha.

We're just commenting on a royal story. I.e. that M&H are not promoting British mental health charities, but global expensive retreats run by Meghan's friends.

asdou · 12/05/2019 20:19

Joint IG account isn't it so why blame just one of the holders

Because this particular friend, is Meghan's friend.

asdou · 12/05/2019 20:20

£3600 for 4 days.........

Yes - just what you want when you're in the depths of despair....

Pengrin · 12/05/2019 20:21

There are probably a lot of favours in return too. E.g. good press in the US, not selling stories etc.

asdou · 12/05/2019 20:23

I'm not sure many of us have almost 4k to pay for 4 yoga classes and 4 bootcamp classes in a posh hotel.......

I think my mind is a lot calmer not having to think about such an amount of money.

asdou · 12/05/2019 20:25

It's a bit crass to be honest.

The British public are not going to tolerate her notions of global influence in the high classes.

She married into the British Royal Family and seems to have not an iota of an idea of what that entails.

Bookworm4 · 12/05/2019 20:35

@asdou
Roaster is an idiot, somebody that talks shite.
Popular Scottish phrase 😂😂

Bestfootforward1 · 12/05/2019 21:02

"Gentlemanwiththistledownhair

Haha yes OP! Now it's in both the mirror and the metro as well as the daily mail, I'm right behind you. They're all such quality publications... hmm"

*Again, misses point.

It’s only grim if it’s true. Which in this instance it isn’t."

Yes it is. Have u actually looked at the IG post?

... take the blame off the royal PR officers. that account is 100% her

Whether it's her or not, the British RF seems to work on a principle where any credit goes to them and any blame gets passed onto "advisers". Thus we see endless examples of them being delighted to share success, but when did you last see a senior member admit to getting something wrong?

It's true that Meghan will have had little idea of what it entails to be a member of our RF, but given the haste of the marriage that's only natural. FWIW I also wonder about their PR staff choices, but hopefully over time they'll learn what works best and the whole thing might settle down a bit

Alsohuman · 12/05/2019 21:58

Yes, I have looked at the Instagram post. It’s a fuss over nothing stirred up by the gutter press.

Lostbutnotfound · 12/05/2019 22:14

I couldn't work out which square was getting everyone's knickers in such a twist. Now found it. It's not exactly in your face advertising is it. A small picture in amongst many others. You'd only discover who's tagged if you tap the picture, and then you have to click through to the other Insta page. I struggle to see how that can be perceived tbe way it has been by some . And actually really fucking rich people have mental health problems too.

Typical fucking Daily Mail. They've absolutely got the daggers out for MM. I hope she doesn't see this thread.

So just a few days after she has had a baby, probably sore, hormones all over the place, exhausted and totally fascinated by the love she feels and overwhelmed by all the emotions as we are when we have a baby but apparently Megan has other things on her mind that are more important to her and this is plugging a friends luxury retreat

Ffs it’s not even thinly veiled racism now it’s so f*cking obvious
