....to think that this is a new low in the Meghan Markle Debacle

Up to now I've been fairly neutral about Harry and Meghan. I'm not a royalist, im a bit of a republican, but I like to see what the royals are up to, and like a royal wedding. The family rows, extravagant baby shower, all the rumours....I believe in giving people the benefit of the doubt, i was pretty indifferent. And i liked the way she was shaking up the royal family.
However, this sickened me a bit. Using an instagram post supposed to benefit mental health charities to flog her rich mate's £900 a night hotel/retreat. Its such a blatantly tasteless and crass thing to do I think its shocking. Welcome the new Fergie.

The Royal Warrant clearly illustrates the principle of endorsement of commercial enterprises. It doesn’t make any difference if they link via social media or not. The principle is firmly established and has been for centuries. It goes even further with Duchy Originals, as you say @Puzzled. But clearly OP isn’t interested in the facts.

"Agree the anti Meghan sentiments are racism with a lot of snobbery and anti Americanism mixed in. I bet if she was Lady Horseington-Oldmoney and did the same things the papers would be fawning all over her."

Racism? Seriously? Hmm.

"Lady Horseington-Oldmoney" (Fergie) WAS dragged through the papers for pimping out business meetings with Andrew for cash.

No - I havent missed the point at all regarding Royal Warrants. You have seem.to be conflating them with underhand and opaque Instagram advertising on behalf of friends

The point is that the Royal warrants are at least administered through a clear published process by a third party to stop the Royal Family showing or appearing to show fear or favour individually - which is exactly what has happened here.

Apparent bias is just as damaging as bias

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 13/05/2019 18:45

It's the Lord Chamberlain - NOT the Royal Family individually who decides who is grated a royal warrant.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 13/05/2019 19:07

Alsohuman to be fair, I should have added that all profits from the Duchy products allegedly go to charity ... though given the dubiously opaque nature of the separate Duchy of Cornwall, anyone who believes that will probably believe anything

And though I'm probably splitting hairs, I honestly do see a difference between three "senior royals" being allowed to endorse a supplier and the wider family indulging in blatant advertising. Granted it's perhaps a fine point, but IMO it's still there

Alsohuman · 13/05/2019 19:07

For the third and final time, it’s the principle of commercial endorsement. It could be the Lord of Darkness who decides who’s granted a Royal Warrant, the principle is the same.

Alsohuman · 13/05/2019 19:09

Sorry, @Puzzled, cross post and I do think you’re splitting hairs!

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 13/05/2019 19:12

The principle is totally different. Can't you see the difference between individual members of the Royal Family giving free ads to their mates and a transparent process that anyone can apply for as long as they meet published criteria administered by a third party? Honestly - you cannot see the difference in that.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 13/05/2019 19:17

You could well be right, Alsohuman - I'll gladly put my hands up to that Wink

Overall, this is why I object in principle to the Royal Warrants thing too; it's clearly too much to expect with such a grasping family, but I'd much rather they steered clear of all commercial activities, whether that's flogging biscuits, supporting paedophiles, selling access or anything else

You'd think the public money they already suck up was reward enough, but apparently not Hmm

Alsohuman · 13/05/2019 19:38

No I can’t @Gobbol. Sorry not to oblige you.

twattymctwatterson · 14/05/2019 20:05

cold do you GENUINELY believe that MM is sitting at home updating an instagram account? Honestly? I worked in the world of comms/media relations in a previous life. The Sussex's have a public relations team behind them and a small part of their job is to manage the official Instagram account. That's literally what they're being paid to do, to ensure the account is "on message". They'll also deal with press queries and sort out appropriate coverage for the couple's charitable work etc. The Cambridge's will have one too - believe it or not, Kate isn't sitting choosing which snaps she's taken from her iPhone to whack on insta.

coldsyrup · 14/05/2019 22:49

yes she sits there and write all her IG captions. she strikes me as that type who believes they know it all

she just keeps on putting her foot in it Smile
