....to think that this is a new low in the Meghan Markle Debacle

Up to now I've been fairly neutral about Harry and Meghan. I'm not a royalist, im a bit of a republican, but I like to see what the royals are up to, and like a royal wedding. The family rows, extravagant baby shower, all the rumours....I believe in giving people the benefit of the doubt, i was pretty indifferent. And i liked the way she was shaking up the royal family.
However, this sickened me a bit. Using an instagram post supposed to benefit mental health charities to flog her rich mate's £900 a night hotel/retreat. Its such a blatantly tasteless and crass thing to do I think its shocking. Welcome the new Fergie.

So they’re endorsing a private business, and asking you to visit the page

Springwalk · 12/05/2019 18:50

I think it is against royal protocol to advertise any business or venture whatsoever. MM either has a dreadful ill advised PR machine that must be utterly clueless. Or she is ignoring their advice. Neither bode well for the future.

They are the royal family not the Kardashians. It is very important that these little slip ups and mistakes do not happen again. The royal family are supposed to be above all of this.

Bestfootforward1 · 12/05/2019 18:54

Whatever any of you think this type of behaviour will start to annoy the general public if it is repeated over and over. Was actually rooting for MM to prove everyone wrong but this is disappointing.
Maybe Her Maj could get a Tesco sign in Buck Palaces window? She could start talking about how great Waitrose is?

They’re asking you to look at an Instagram account. Instagram does not exist primarily or fundamentally to promote business, you’d have to click through to other links for that.

Springwalk · 12/05/2019 18:56

If the royal family are seen to be offering to advertise for people, yes there is a risk of corruption, blackmail and extortion. Not to mention the reputation all damage inflicted on the RF if it is discovered they are on involved with something or someone very distasteful/criminal.
The protocol is there to protect the royal family, and should be adhered to.

What happens if next week yoga retreat owner has photos published with her snorting coke on one of her retreats or uncover fraudulent practises? It leaves Harry and Megan very exposed.

IHateUncleJamie · 12/05/2019 18:57

So they’re endorsing a private business, and asking you to visit the page

No they’re not. They “invite you” to look at other accounts. It’s not bloody obligatory.

Also, what “Meghan Markle debacle” are you referring to, OP? Do you mean the almost daily digs at her from the Daily Heil and that twat Piers Morgan? Because apart from having a baby I haven’t seen or heard anything else this that would constitute a “debacle”.

IHateUncleJamie · 12/05/2019 18:59

Whatever any of you think this type of behaviour will start to annoy the general public if it is repeated over and over.

Will it really. Personally, I find the repetitive threads pretending to be “concerned” about the Duchess of Sussex much more annoying than one line in one IG post.

Abbazed · 12/05/2019 18:59

If I had a spare £3.6k my mental health would improve vastly

Alsohuman · 12/05/2019 19:00

It isn’t against Royal protocol to endorse businesses, they’ve been at it for centuries.

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 12/05/2019 19:10

Yes - there is a process to follow to get a royal warrant which is over seen by a lot more people than just one member of the Royal Family. The days of individual royal patronage is gone

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 12/05/2019 19:13

I find this thread totally odd - I thought the days of absolute deference to the Royal Family had long passed. Obviously not.

LaurieMarlow · 12/05/2019 19:15

there is a process to follow to get a royal warrant

For all we know there is also a process to follow to suggest people view an Instagram page - and Meghan and Harry have followed it to the letter Wink

asdou · 12/05/2019 19:18

There was an article about a month ago called 'H&M delete K&W from Instagram account' or some such similar click-bait headline.
What it actually was, that every month they were going to promote 10 mental health charities by following them or something like that.
If this is one of the charities she's promoting.......... well, what can one say!

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 12/05/2019 19:20

I doubt it - bearing in mind it breaches convention. They were meant to be focusing on charities too. The friend does not run a charity.

To use the platform obtained via marriage into the Royal Family to try and help your friend shill expensive retreats and goop style creams to people with mental health problems is pretty grim really.

Alsohuman · 12/05/2019 19:22

It’s only grim if it’s true. Which in this instance it isn’t.

Bestfootforward1 · 12/05/2019 19:24

Ok for those who are missing the point by saying the Daily Mail is behind the story, here it is in The Metro:

Instagram does not exist primarily or fundamentally to promote business

LOL. You've clearly never visited one of the many InstaMum threads on here where we discuss people's monetization of their babies.

Also for those saying it's not MM posting, yes it is. The account, despite being officially a British one, uses exclusively American terminology and spelling "diapers" "honors" etc. Even down to the detail that when giving birthday wishes to Louis, it ended the message with "xo" (American) rather than "xx" (British).

A British aide would use their own British English as the RF always use British English when releasing information globally.

Note that its of no consequence whether she has control of it, but it's silly to say she doesn't.

And as for "she's had a baby and doesn't have time"?? Am I the only one who spent the early days with baby clamped to nipple with one hand and the Internet open on my phone in the other?! Good Lord the Internet was virtually the only thing I COULD do!

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 12/05/2019 19:25

It is true

As a matter of fact it is:

  1. On Instagram.
  1. Friend doesn't run a charity
  1. Friend runs a business selling expensive lifestyle experiences/classes and accessories (skin care etc). None of the classes or retreats are easily accessible to most of then general public due to cost and location (New York/Carribean)
  1. Friend has not mental health qualifications.

All of this info is available on the internet

It's a complete faux pas. She needs to read up on the mistakes made by Aunties Sarah and Sophie.

Quite. I can only think that someone who makes a statement like that is in possession of quite a lot of Strong Mothers etc clothing which by pure coincidence a huge amount of Instagrammers with accounts aimed at parents wear too. Deluded

A load of shit, I’m barely on the thing.

Gentlemanwiththistledownhair · 12/05/2019 19:31

Haha yes OP! Now it's in both the mirror and the metro as well as the daily mail, I'm right behind you. They're all such quality publications... Hmm

Bluestitch · 12/05/2019 19:32

It's on the bloody IG account. The blind defence of anything MM related is pathetic.

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 12/05/2019 19:35

That's probably for the best laurie as you don't seem to be able to work out when people are trying or influence you online to do or buy something
