....to think that this is a new low in the Meghan Markle Debacle

Up to now I've been fairly neutral about Harry and Meghan. I'm not a royalist, im a bit of a republican, but I like to see what the royals are up to, and like a royal wedding. The family rows, extravagant baby shower, all the rumours....I believe in giving people the benefit of the doubt, i was pretty indifferent. And i liked the way she was shaking up the royal family.
However, this sickened me a bit. Using an instagram post supposed to benefit mental health charities to flog her rich mate's £900 a night hotel/retreat. Its such a blatantly tasteless and crass thing to do I think its shocking. Welcome the new Fergie.

YANBU. They unfollowed everyone they were already following on May 1st, and wanted the focus of their account for this month to be on mental health. So they followed some mental health charities and Meghan's friend's business. It's not the kind of situation where it's just one business account amongst many - they have said themselves that the focus is to be on charities, yet they follow this business. It's dodgy as fuck, and I can see it happening every month as they focus on a new "cause" each month with an advert for one of Meghan's mates thrown in.

I’d be interested to see if the Sussex team get in trouble for advertising a private business and separately in effectively endorsing this influencer’s ideas on mental health treatment. Because this influencer isn’t a healthcare professional and has no qualifications in the area.

How do you know this won’t hurt anyone - especially endorsing Goop style ideas on mental health. And for lots of people that can’t afford that apparent “solution”.

And separately the post is still an abuse of their position.

Uncertain as to why people’s principles fall away, especially on mental health campaigns.

coldsyrup · 12/05/2019 18:19

MM is the one in charge of their IG, it looks exactly the same as her prev ig account! so she needs to take the blame off the royal pr officers. that account is 100% her...

So let me get this straight and correct me if I’m wrong. What they’ve actually posted is a picture of this person in a yoga pose. Correct?

Mississippilessly · 12/05/2019 18:25

I never realised so many people must live far away from any interesting attractions, have no cars or bikes, and have cleaners, gardeners, personal PAs and no TVs, board games, books or phones in their houses

This is the only explanation for how anybody has enough time on their hands to complain about this.

Notmyrealname855 · 12/05/2019 18:26

Their post links to the influencer’s page, her yoga business profile is tagged. The rest of the tags are for actual charities.

The Sussex page unfollowed all previous IG pages they followed - ie charities and other royal pages - to follow only pages tagged in the post we are discussing.

Alsohuman · 12/05/2019 18:27

Perhaps everyone frothing about the inappropriateness of Royal endorsement might like to reflect on that centuries old tradition of By Royal Appointment awarded to countless British businesses.

DizzySue · 12/05/2019 18:28

@LaurieMarlow

You are wrong.

The post contains links to organisations that support mental health. One of the links is to her friends exclusive yoga retreat charging upwards of £900 per night. So basically the post is an advertisement for her friends business, instead of offering just links for mental health charities and support.

I don't think she should be endorsing friends businesses on her official royal Instagram page. But it seems many people don't have a problem it.

Breathlessness · 12/05/2019 18:29

It links to their Instagram page which has all sorts of ‘inspirational’ quotes and yoga pics. Just like the Bryony Gordon link leads to her instagram page that’s full of stuff about body and general positivity and and the book she’s written and is selling. Just like the Matt Haig link goes to his Instagram page that has lots of positive stuff and quotes from the books he has written including Reasons To Stay Alive. The Bryony Gordon link is arguably the most commercial with recent posts about her book.

Notmyrealname855 · 12/05/2019 18:29

Mississippilessly because it’s a form of light corruption. It is why other royals have been reviewed for this - including Sophie and Fergie.

Pengrin · 12/05/2019 18:31

This is what happens when someone who is used to a certain lifestyle marries into the royal family.

It’ll be difficult to let go of everything she’s used to and I imagine it’ll take some time to completely adapt to her new life and all of the limits it brings.

VampireSlayer19 · 12/05/2019 18:31

Rich people have MH problems to!

It was one square out of 9 and it is a health resort promoting meditation and relaxation so seems in keeping with the message.

Plus Daily Mail it’s probably not the place at all and I doubt she personally over saw anything I would think quite busy atm!

Mississippilessly · 12/05/2019 18:33

But couldn't the same be said of the Duchess of Cambridge's wardrobe? And her styling her children in clothes which sell out hours afterwards? Isnt that the same thing?

(I do think that royalty and actors dont mix and that MM is going to struggle but I hope I'm wrong).

Breathlessness · 12/05/2019 18:33

www.instagram.com/theclass/ The one this thread is about

www.instagram.com/bryonygordon/ Another link from the same post

www.instagram.com/mattzhaig/ And another

AudacityOfHope · 12/05/2019 18:35

Yeah, advice. It's basically a 'play nice and don't take the piss out of the paying public too obviously' line.

Whether they stick to it or not they're all shysters. But let's not pretend it's more than a general code of behaviour.

Notmyrealname855 · 12/05/2019 18:37

Mississippilessly so what are any of them supposed to wear...

LaurieMarlow · 12/05/2019 18:39

So they’ve also linked to other people who also publicise their wares on their Instagram pages? Right?

CarolDanvers · 12/05/2019 18:41

Children need clothes. No one needs to go yoga retreats costing £1000's where they'll be smilingly encouraged to buy related products and certainly not have it linked to support with mental health issues.

IHateUncleJamie · 12/05/2019 18:42

Visitors to the Sussexes’ Instagram page are encouraged to follow 48-year-old Mrs Toomey

No they’re not. I follow the Sussex page and nothing pops up saying “follow Mrs Toomey”. Typical DM.

Mississippilessly · 12/05/2019 18:45

Do people know who dresses the queen?

I'm.not trying to be facetious I just think that it's almost impossible for them not to be adverts for stuff

Breathlessness · 12/05/2019 18:45

They’ve linked to people who have something to do with mental health. Yoga is recommended by Psychologists and Psychiatrists as a way to help manage anxiety and stress, the breathing exercises in particular. Books about body positivity, changing your mindset and perspective to focus on positive things, finding hope for a future are all related to mental health. Self help is as important.

Notmyrealname855 · 12/05/2019 18:45

“We invite you to explore the extraordinary stories of strength, and the commitment to kindness seen in the above accounts”

Alsohuman · 12/05/2019 18:45

For info

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_warrant_of_appointment

Notmyrealname855 · 12/05/2019 18:47

Yes but they link to a very specific yoga business run out of the States and with classes in Mustique, not a community run charity

LaurieMarlow · 12/05/2019 18:49

We invite you to explore the extraordinary stories of strength, and the commitment to kindness seen in the above accounts

So they’re inviting people to look at various Instagram accounts. Ok. Not seeing much to get worked up about there.
