....to think that this is a new low in the Meghan Markle Debacle

Up to now I've been fairly neutral about Harry and Meghan. I'm not a royalist, im a bit of a republican, but I like to see what the royals are up to, and like a royal wedding. The family rows, extravagant baby shower, all the rumours....I believe in giving people the benefit of the doubt, i was pretty indifferent. And i liked the way she was shaking up the royal family.
However, this sickened me a bit. Using an instagram post supposed to benefit mental health charities to flog her rich mate's £900 a night hotel/retreat. Its such a blatantly tasteless and crass thing to do I think its shocking. Welcome the new Fergie.

I didn’t get my news from the DM - I’m a Guardian reader for what it’s worth, but I got this news from IG as I follow the Sussex IG account.

Bluestitch · 12/05/2019 16:17

The Middletons potentially exploiting royal links is tacky but they are private citizens so it's not really comparable. Enough people have picked up on this on their Instagram that it reflects badly. They are not beyond reproach and they need better PR.

JingsMahBucket · 12/05/2019 16:48

@HBStowe
People always claim to hate the daily mail until it’s the only media source that supports their particular pet prejudice. But remember - all of the reasons why you despite it normally (lack of transparency, inaccuracy in reporting, disregard for the truth, obvious agenda, misogyny, racism, homophobia) also apply to articles which support how you feel. This isn’t a case of a stopped clock being right twice a day. This is a case of you ignoring the obvious issues with this article because it happens to support an agenda you agree with.

Totally nailed the psychology of it all. This is a mix of confirmation bias and lack of empathy for other people. It’s what enabled people to vote for T*p because they thought most of his platform didn’t apply to them but they agreed about that one particular pet peeve. It’s the slippery slope where people let themselves be convinced.

Notmyrealname855 · 12/05/2019 16:52

So for those of us who are Guardian readers and agree the Sussex IG post was totally unethical, especially on a mental health post...

AudacityOfHope · 12/05/2019 17:00

Sickened? Really?

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 12/05/2019 17:01

I read lots of different news sources - not just one. I'm able to critically evaluate the facts and draw my own conclusions

AllAboutMeAlways · 12/05/2019 17:04

FFS.

Nobody is “getting their news” from the Mail. It’s right there for anyone to see on their IG. I saw it a week ago, long before the Mail clocked it.

Markle has used Mental Health Awareness month to publicise her friend’s expensive yoga retreat. Given that there’s hardly a shortage of not-for-profit mental health charities on both sides of the Atlantic it’s extremely hard to see how this anything other than her doing a favour for someone who showed up at her highly publicised baby shower.

This is disgusting and a very, very wrong thing for any member of the royal family to do.

And I will also say that it is becoming downright offensive that so many MNers are refusing to allow any criticism of La Markle on the very odd, totally insupportable claim that it’s always “thinly veiled racism”.

If you cannot judge a fellow human being on the content of their characters and only see a skin colour when you look at them shame on you.

Your accusations of “racism” are beginning to look suspiciously like projection.

Bestfootforward1 · 12/05/2019 17:04

IHaveNoIdeaReally

It would save a lot of time if people slagging off the Duchess of Sussex would just be honest and start their threads or posts off with "I hate her because she's black And American."

Really? Hmm

YABU for thinking there is actually a MM 'debacle'. She could die sacrificing her life to safe a boat load of orphaned new borns and she'd still get criticised as attention grabbing or some such nonsense.

Oh fgs leave the woman alone!!!!!

Aveeno2017 · 12/05/2019 17:08

Why can't people leave them alone.Prince Andrews former friend was a paedophile but I can't recall seeing endless MN posts about that.it goes to show that people just don't like successful mixed race women!!

I dont live in the UK but seen it on Instagram and thought that's just not right.

It is a blatant plug for a friends business. It hardly aligns to the daily struggle most people face in trying to support their mental health.

Aveeno2017 · 12/05/2019 17:14

I was trying to point out how the press seem to treat MM differently to other Royals.

BarbarianMum · 12/05/2019 17:14

ODFOD with you poisonous faux concern.

Bestfootforward1 · 12/05/2019 17:14

"Notmyrealname855

I follow the Sussex IG page and was surprised when they posted this tbh - it is a commercial venture, for people to spend several thousand at yoga retreats. A few of us queried this on their post - didn’t think royals could plug private businesses, or ones owned by friends, and tbh I did find it very distasteful that it was done on a post about mental health. The business is run by MM’s friend (this was pointed out by one of the IG posters at the time), who had attended her baby shower in New York.

Surprised it’s taken so long for the press to pick up on really. Agree the DM is grim, and agree reporting on MM has been off previously, but why Harry and her haven’t come under fire for this is also odd. It was a very obvious plug for a very specific company, and feels very wrong to do it on a mental health post. The company is a private venture, nothing close to a charity. It would be like them plugging Goop. Found it really strange they tried to do the plug amongst some really good causes. Plus the Sussexes unfollowed really good causes - including those supporting veterans and fighting AIDs - to focus on those in the post.

An odd and unethical move."

Thanks for that. You put it so much better than me. Totally agree.

And those accusing me of racism: So when I slagged Fergie off for flogging business meetings with Andrew, was I being gingerist. And when I got annoyed at Carole exploiting her royal connections to promote her business was I misogynist? And when Charles flogs his Duchy Originals products to make millions, what 'ist' am I then?

OP posts:
Bluestitch · 12/05/2019 17:18

I saw a thread a while ago discussing how criticism of MM was racist etc. When asked why she couldn't be criticised when other royals were those same posters said it was fine to criticise if there was a specific reason. Now there is a specific reason, evidenced, and what do you know? It's all 'leave her alone you racists'.

Bluestitch · 12/05/2019 17:20

And it's actually Harry and their PR who should be criticised the most.

RuffleCrow · 12/05/2019 17:22

You're only ever four clicks away from anything nowadays. Are we supposed to be blaming this fact on a member of the Royal Family who just happens to be mixed race?

Funny how the DM don't have an issue with Prince Charles and his captive-market Waitrose deal where if you want to buy almost anything organic you automatically have to contribute to his already huge estate. Hmm

Bestfootforward1 · 12/05/2019 17:24

"This is not a binary issue though - PH can do good work for Invictus and have acted inappropriately here. We are not required to fan girl everything they do. Thankfully critical thinking is not against the law. Pointing out a breach of standards - which is a matter of fact - is not racist. "

Thanks, summed up perfectly, better than I did.

Ah another Megan witch hunt 🙄

Not only a witch hunt though, the OP has kindly supplied a daily fail link without indicating you’ll be clicking on that piece of shit paper

Bluestitch · 12/05/2019 17:31

Harry should know better. MM is new to the institution and comes from a celeb culture where she had lifestyle blogs, endorsements etc so might need more guidance. Their PR is doing a crap job too.

Marilynmansonsthermos · 12/05/2019 17:35

Yes you are being very unreasonable. Don't believe this rubbish.
