To think this country has the best weather?

I honestly feel like the UK has the best weather. Not too cold, not too hot and almost always manageable. I am baffled by people who complain. I used to live in California and the heat waves could be intense, with very expensive air conditioning bills and I don't miss the burning sensation you could get when you touched a black steering wheel or sat on hot leather of a car that was parked outside. I have also spent time in Lapland and lived in Minnesota, so I know what it's like to step outside in to a cold that is painful.

AIBU to think there is no reason to complain about the weather here? I love it!

On the whole I agree with you OP, although I would love a bit of snow in the winter (I live in the SE so it's rare) and more warm sunny days in the summer. But am grateful that we rarely have the extremes of weather that make life difficult. And of course we wouldn't have our beautiful countryside without all the rain!

Pinkarsedfly · 11/05/2019 19:05

Well, it gives us something to talk about.

Miljah · 11/05/2019 19:43

bibbitty The Alps manage to look lush without feet of rain drizzling out of a grey sky!

I agree waking to a bright, clear, blue summer's day is a delight, as you drive in to do your 12 hour shift..... cos, come your day off...🙄

Like many, if there were a reasonable guarantee of even 2 months of sunshine in the summer and a reasonable amount of bright, dry, crisp winter weather, it'd be okay. But British weather isn't like that.

Yes, in Hants tonight, it's clear and lovely. But I'm in my conservatory in tracky trousers and fleece top as it's cold. And I got drizzled on in London this morning!!

Nickpan · 11/05/2019 19:46

I used to work with a man from off of Canada, and his friend came over to visit him. I asked if they tased about he weather, GOD YES! he said. In Canada apparently it's hot from April, then cold from Oct, there's nothing to talk about.

Miljah · 11/05/2019 19:49

I do miss humdinger thunderstorms, and rain so heavy on your corrugate roof you can't hear yourself think! And the mad dash home before flooded creeks wash over the Highway!

However, I am more than aware that it's fine in a well-built house, in a first world country, but could equal losing everything for many people around the world.

Miljah · 11/05/2019 19:51

Nikpan I gather east coast Canada has weather like ours but with feet of snow!

bonnielassie1 · 11/05/2019 19:51

I think it’s all about preferences. I live in a hot country it’s 30 degrees all year and that outdoor lifestyle of swimming in the ocean and being outside is constant. When I was in the UK it seemed to rain allll the time

Bugsymalonemumof2 · 11/05/2019 20:08

I live in Bournemouth so central south coast and love our weather

Miljah · 11/05/2019 20:10

See, in mid May, which is where we are 😉 we walked out onto Bournemouth pier last evening at 8pm. The sky was pale grey, the wind cool, the water steely.

Didn't do it for me. 😊

Whatwillhappentomorrow · 11/05/2019 20:21

I dislike British weather. Yes it could be worse and we could have the extremes of weather that cause absolute devastation. But, I would feel much happier if it could be about 18-24 degrees each day throughout the year. Constant grey, wet and cold weather just causes too much misery.

TapasForTwo · 11/05/2019 20:34

How hot PookieDoo?
Where I live was 12 degrees today. That is most definitely not hot.

Fortunately, where I am at the moment was 22 degrees and wall to wall sunshine - perfect.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 11/05/2019 20:46

It would drive me round the twist to live in constant weather all year round! The changing of the seasons is a marvel of nature and very much appreciated by me at least. As a UK resident I'm just saying I'd like a slightly more marked definitions and a bit less rain in the summer, generally (not including last year or 1976 obvs).

My London born parents lived in California for many years and sincerely got fed up of non-changing weather over there.

Boneshere · 11/05/2019 22:12

Yabu! Give me humid, sweaty boob weather anyday over cold, wet May's and two weeks of sun a year.

edgeofheaven · 12/05/2019 00:03

Continental Europe also has four seasons but seems to get far more sunshine. East coast of the US has intense winters but incredible summers. The lack of sunshine in the UK is a bit depressing. I’d take a colder but sunnier winter to be honest.

SnowsInWater · 12/05/2019 07:26

I'm really happy for those who like UK weather but I found it a miserable way to exist. The weather in Sydney is just one of the many reasons I love living here.

0ccamsRazor · 12/05/2019 07:35

I love that it can be tempestuous and elemental one day, calm and balmy another.

PookieDo · 12/05/2019 07:47

It was about 14 degrees and cloudy all day (no rain) then the clouds all cleared about 5pm and it was really warm until the sun went down

givemesteel · 12/05/2019 08:07

The weather is for me is absolutely the worst thing about living in the uk.

I don't mind the cold. But there are too many grey days, where I can't see the sky or sun.

I like hot weather but British houses aren't set up for heatwaves like last year so you just end up sweltering at night, your kids don't sleep etc. If I could spend £5k on air conditioning then I'd feel differently I guess.

I don't like the unpredictability of it. Organise a bbq and you know there's a 30-40% chance you'll have to cancel or have everyone cooped up inside as its been rained off.

I'd rather live somewhere with cold but sunny winters and guaranteed warm spring / summer.

But our country has so many advantages I wouldn't emigrate just because of the weather.

mydogisthebest · 12/05/2019 08:42

It rained all week where I lived. I did no washing because I refuse to use my tumble drier in May.

Yesterday started off sunny so I did a wash, hung it out and put another wash on. Within less than an hour it absolutely poured so ending up having to re-wash it and then tumble dry 2 lots of washing.

The weather in the UK pisses me off and really does not help my depression and SAD

Theoldwoman · 12/05/2019 09:19

I am in Australia, I could not stand the weather in the UK, barely any hot days and way way too much rain.

Miljah · 14/05/2019 20:03

occamsrazor 'loving that it can be tempestuous and elemental one day, calm and balmy the next' er- no.

I obviously don't know where you live in the UK, but here in Hants, it is often cool, grey, windy and drizzly for weeks on end, with maybe a couple of interspersed just grey days- then the odd hallelujah of really nice, sunny, blue-skied calm weather for sometimes, a week or two! Or not.

I mean, people on here have referred to1976 as a high point!

With respect, no one can really call Hampshire weather 'elemental', and may struggle to find 'balmy'.

It's mid May. Today it got to 15.

Meadowland · 15/05/2019 07:41

It's hilarious- last year during the heatwave people were moaning that it was too hot.
Then we had some much needed rain and people tutted that it was raining again....!!
I love our climate. Looking out the window now at a glorious blue sky while some friends are in the cold and rain in Munich.

BackToDecember · 15/05/2019 07:50

I like how boring the weather is here personally. Nothing like my home country.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 16/05/2019 18:12

Whoever wondered why so many Brits moan about grey, depressing weather - and then fill their houses with grey kitchens, grey paint, etc. I agree 100%.
Still, it's a fashion that will go the way of avocado bathrooms soon - if it hasn't already.

RedPandaMama · 16/05/2019 18:15

Yay! I love British weather too. I like it to be warm and sunny (I'm talking 15-25 degrees C) but any more and I just get sweaty and irritable. I'm a pale redhead so I burn no matter what and hot weather just does my head in.

My birthday is late April and I've always been lucky with the weather and had outdoor parties.
