To think this country has the best weather?

I honestly feel like the UK has the best weather. Not too cold, not too hot and almost always manageable. I am baffled by people who complain. I used to live in California and the heat waves could be intense, with very expensive air conditioning bills and I don't miss the burning sensation you could get when you touched a black steering wheel or sat on hot leather of a car that was parked outside. I have also spent time in Lapland and lived in Minnesota, so I know what it's like to step outside in to a cold that is painful.

AIBU to think there is no reason to complain about the weather here? I love it!

God no. It's way too cold and damp. It's wet and grey and miserable way too much.

Likethebattle · 10/05/2019 16:33

If you want seasons come to Scotland. You get all 4 every day.

Toddlerteaplease · 10/05/2019 16:35

Agree OP. I would hate the same weather every day. And what else would we have to talk about if the weather was predictable! It the whole basis of British society!

Allhailthesun · 10/05/2019 16:41

It’s ok. I like seasons but I don’t like that lots of the long days ie May and June can be so unpredictable. Even in the SE we have had frost and snow in May even if March was relatively warm.
By the time the days start getting shorter in August it’s bloody Autumn again.

AguerosAngel · 10/05/2019 16:44

Good God, no! It’s miserable, grey, rainy and far too cold.

I’m counting the days till DH & I retire to sunnier climes!

BorisBadunov · 10/05/2019 16:51

YABVU. How can grey, damp cold for most of the year be “great weather”? Spring is just a slug invasion, summer lasts a few weeks and isn’t even that warm, there are no autumn colours, no proper snow in the winter so no winter sports.

The south of France is obviously better.

BorisBadunov · 10/05/2019 16:52

And the days are way too short in winter.

MaxNormal · 10/05/2019 16:54

I'd be happy with four seasons if you actually got four of them. Some snow in winter, a decent hot summer and also if winter didn't last for almost six months. It's just a chilly grey sogfest for way too much of it.

specterlitt · 10/05/2019 17:00

Us British are known to complain about the weather, just think of it as part of our charm. What else could we talk about when making small talk? The weather unites us all Wink.

Jokes aside, I love UK weather as we really do get to experience it all.

piratehooker · 10/05/2019 17:02

Absolutely on side with you OP! I love the grey, the cold, the rain... could do with the summers being less stifling and overly hot, but I (grudgingly) accept that some light and heat is needed at some point! But yes, I generally love British weather, especially Autumn and Spring.

HJWT · 10/05/2019 17:21

Ask my poor DD who has been stuck in doors for 2 weeks because of the rain! Went out in the garden today for 20 mins now is pissing down again 🤣

lilabet2 · 10/05/2019 17:23

In terms of a lack of extremes I think Britain's weather is great- we're never (or very rarely) at risk of dying in heat waves or from the cold.

I hate rain but it does mean we have beautiful grassy fields and flowers so yeah!

Asta19 · 10/05/2019 17:25

I agree. I hate the summer but I get through it knowing that Autumn then winter will come. It would be my idea of hell to live somewhere where it’s sunny all year round. Equally, I think year round cold weather would get to me in the end (although less so than hot). Spring and autumn are my favourites.

However, I personally wish it would get darker earlier in Summer. I’ve been to Japan in the summer and the days are hotter than here but it gets dark around 7:30 still, which cools things down nicely in time for bedtime.

Toodleoopuddle · 10/05/2019 17:30

I absolutely hate the weather in the uk, it makes me utterly miserable (except for usually July and august) But it's nice to hear all the appreciation I'm going to have a good read through later.

BogglesGoggles · 10/05/2019 17:31

I lived in Australia and find the heat harder to deal with here. No infrastructure to deal with heat and no bloody trees

Meadowland · 10/05/2019 17:40

Yes, love the weather in the UK.
Lived in a country with a hot climate for a while and hated it. Felt so sluggish all the time.
Got sick of putting on sun tan cream in daytime, then mosquito repellant at night. Felt my skin aged 10 years !!

AnnaComnena · 10/05/2019 17:45

Ask my poor DD who has been stuck in doors for 2 weeks because of the rain!

It is possible to go out in the rain! One just needs appropriate clothing.

Another thing we have that many countries don't is the seaside! Paddling, sandcastles, Iovely coastal walks, fish and chips! I think most people in the UK live 2hr or less from the seaside.

Gertie75 · 10/05/2019 17:47

yabu.
It used to be good, sunny summer's and snowy winters but the seasons are all merging into being generally cloudy, cool and grey.

We had a lovely week at Easter and Feb half term and the odd nice day but apart from that it's been dull and cold for the last 8 months.

Yet again they're forecasting a few nicer days then back to depressing grey.

Ronsters · 10/05/2019 17:53

I mainly like it, I prefer cool weather. Spring is my favourite time of year. I find the frequent grey and cloud depressing at times though.

PissOffPeppa · 10/05/2019 17:53

I agree with you. I hate the cold. I hate the heat. I’m generally happy here in the south east purely because it’s so ‘meh’. I do wish it was a little sunnier at the moment though.

Also agree with what a PP said about no dangerous animals, no risk of strong earthquakes/ tornadoes etc and a generally peaceful society.

We have our problems but I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else

Kismett · 10/05/2019 17:54

I really dislike the weather here. I don’t understand how people can say it varies so much, it certainly doesn’t in our part of England. It’s so often some version of grey with a chance of rain. Not proper rain, just enough to spoil your day.

I’d take the weather in the Bay Area or even midwestern winters over the weather here any day.

ForalltheSaints · 10/05/2019 17:57

We may not have the weather everyone likes, but we are devoid of extremes, which given how badly many cope with the odd day over 25C is no bad thing.

What we have that could be avoided is longish dark evenings, by the sensible approach of BST all year around.

BorisBadunov · 10/05/2019 19:21

@specter we really do get to experience it all

We really, really don’t.

It’s never hot, it’s never cold (think Canadian winters), there’s no monsoon, there’s no dry period. The UK has some of the most boring weather anywhere in the world.

Gin96 · 10/05/2019 19:44

I love the UK weather, we hardly ever have a drought. I didn’t enjoy last summer, I love the rain, it makes everything grow, beautiful green fields. It is usually only cold for a couple of days a year and we only get a couple of weeks when it’s hot in the summer 😊

Strokethefurrywall · 10/05/2019 20:58

As someone who lives in the Caribbean I'd have to agree about the UK having the best weather ever, but that being said I miss actual seasons (which the UK has variable versions of...).

I want to know that I'm going to have a cracking summer, beautiful fall, chilly winter (with some snow) and a lovely spring. Each marked with a few months of each type of weather.

As it was, the false hope of a lovely early summers day being followed by a 10oc drop in temp the following day was too much for me so I left for sunnier climes. That's not to say that I don't think that the UK on a beautiful summers day is not one of the best things in the world, but I like the consistency of a good climate over the "hope" of a decent summer, rather than the average grey skies and chilly damn weather.
