To think this country has the best weather?

I honestly feel like the UK has the best weather. Not too cold, not too hot and almost always manageable. I am baffled by people who complain. I used to live in California and the heat waves could be intense, with very expensive air conditioning bills and I don't miss the burning sensation you could get when you touched a black steering wheel or sat on hot leather of a car that was parked outside. I have also spent time in Lapland and lived in Minnesota, so I know what it's like to step outside in to a cold that is painful.

AIBU to think there is no reason to complain about the weather here? I love it!

I love it too. Love our summers but equally love our winter. Nothing beats it.

Genevieva · 10/05/2019 15:50

I love British weather. You can't have green fields without rain. I hate intense heat. Sunny days here, when you get them, are the best in the world.

AlbertWinestein · 10/05/2019 15:52

Are you kidding?! It’s grey, damp and depressing half the time. As soon as it gets remotely warm, everyone starts moaning and as soon as it drizzles one tiny snowflake, everything grinds to a halt.

AngeloMysterioso · 10/05/2019 15:53

Most people in the UK are vitamin D deficient because we get so little sun. It’s just cloudy and grey all the fucking time.

I’d much rather New England weather- they get actual seasons, we get two weeks or so of proper spring, summer, autumn and winter and the rest of the time it’s just dull and grey.

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 10/05/2019 15:53

You have to be kidding.
There is a massive difference depending on where in the country you are, grey rainy Lancashire or the sunny south.

SVRT19674 · 10/05/2019 15:55

Well, it depends what you compare it to. Better than Saudi Arabia and Iceland I guess. Everything is relative.

NunoGoncalves · 10/05/2019 15:56

It's all subjective I suppose. You say "not too cold" but to me it definitely is too cold.

Where I live the winter days are 18-22C and pure sunshine, and I love it. I own much fewer clothes, I don't ever have to worry about putting on tons of layers and jackets etc (or having to take them off again every time I step into a shop or wherever). Rain is rarely an issue. I can sling on a pair of flip flops and pop out comfortably whenever I want. Me and the kids can COMFORTABLY do outdoorsy activities all year round.

English weather just makes life slightly less fun and comfortable for about 10 months of the year.

FloatingthroughSpace · 10/05/2019 16:00

Not only do we have a mild climate, we also have no scary creepy crawlies, no tigers to leap out on you, no volcanoes, earthquakes or tidal waves, and compared to many countries (whilst there is PLENTY of room for improvement) a relatively benign governmental system.

We are bloody lucky.

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 10/05/2019 16:05

I come from the north of Scotland and live in the south of Germany. I much prefer the climate here. Four proper seasons, cold in winter, warm and sunny in summer, and you can actually plan outdoor activities. One came back for a visit in July and had to buy a warm jacket, scarf, hat and gloves as it was windy and raining and 9 degrees. I cried.

Trippedupagain · 10/05/2019 16:06

Totally agree, OP. I love it too!

EjectorCrab · 10/05/2019 16:06

I agree - I love that we have seasons.

Zakana · 10/05/2019 16:07

I lived in Cyprus for 5 years, and worked there for an off shore company and I hated the way there were no real seasons as such, the way that it only rained for 28 days a year on average, and the fact that for months every year it would be so hot you could barely breathe, even at night. Hated that it was grey and dusty most of the year and that the water got turned off every other day.

I’m now in the SE and I love our weather and greenery, I really appreciate it.

Mind you, I have Scottish origins so maybe that’s why the heat doesn’t suit me too much....

BossAssBitch · 10/05/2019 16:08

I'm in the SE, I love the climate, I would hate to live somewhere with no seasons. I lived in the Med for three years when I was younger and I got bored of the endless sunny days, I desperately wanted it to rain!

There is nowhere like the UK countyside on a cold, bright day, so uplifting.

SolitudeAtAltitude · 10/05/2019 16:11

I agree, but I have to specify that I am on the South Coast which gets (IMO) the nicest weather.

In the West there's too much rain, in the North it gets too cold for me. But the South coast of England is just great. Mostly Grin From a weather point of view anyway. Too many people, too many roads ,and houses are £££ though .... Sad

I have lived in Scandinavia and South America, and one was too cold and wet and the other too humid and hot.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 10/05/2019 16:14

I'm feeling a bit sour because I was supposed to be on holiday in a sunny climate and had to cancel, but I think British weather is pretty dreadful for most of the year, grey, dull, cold and damp. And it's unpredictable too. There are regional variations, definitely damper and greyer the further west you go.

Our best season is without doubt Spring, when the gardens are coming to life and (usually) we are benefiting from longer sunnier days. But on a day like today all I want to do is curl up under a blanket.

Branleuse · 10/05/2019 16:15

I disagree, I find the winter too long and relentless, and the summer too short and too humid and unpredictable.

I really love the southwest of france pyrennees orientale/aude , with long warm summers, proper spring, proper glorious colourful autumn, and short snowy winters

Halloumimuffin · 10/05/2019 16:15

Our seasons seem to be merging into one greyish medium these days but I do like the complete averageness of it. Wish we had a bit more sun but not too hot.

JustLikeAPill · 10/05/2019 16:15

As a person born in May I used to have birthday parties as a child where friends from school/clubs and cousins etc would come to ours where there would be food and a bouncy castle in the garden. It was ALWAYS sunny. In the last 15 years I can't remember a day where it didn't rain on my birthday.

I generally like this weather. I'm thankful we don't have extreme earthquakes or tsunamis

MissCharleyP · 10/05/2019 16:16

It’s awful! OK, we don’t have extreme events like hurricanes or tsunami, but we don’t have proper seasons anymore. It’s grey, cool (if not cold) and windy for at least ten months of the year. I moved to the south coast in 2015 and I was stood at a bus stop in a howling gale with rain being blown into me and 13 degree temps in fucking July! Yesterday DH and I went for a day out and I had my winter puffa on, its crap for the time of year ATM. Today where I am (NW UK), it’s struggling to get to double figures and has been raining on and off most of the day. I also hate the humidity level here - impossible to have decent hair, that’s the reason I loved Vegas so much!

LagunaBubbles · 10/05/2019 16:18

I take it by UK you mean England?

outvoid · 10/05/2019 16:21

I agree to an extent but do think it depends entirely on your location. Obviously it’s always warmer and generally drier down south.

I like the cold so am fine with the temperature, could do with slightly less rain though...

NoHolidaysforyou · 10/05/2019 16:23

Hmm not sure if I just mean England. We spent some time in Scotland last winter around Dollar and drove around in the snow, it was cold but still a nice kind of cold that you could enjoy. You could play in the snow for quite a bit of time. It wasn't the feeling of your skin wanting to come off your face like it was in Minnesota and Lapland.

OP posts:
goingonabearhunt1 · 10/05/2019 16:23

I love British summer and the greenness of the countryside (rain needed for that obv) but what I hate is Brits complaining about summer; seems like as soon as the sun comes out people complain about how hot it is even though the summer barely lasts any time at all.

goingonabearhunt1 · 10/05/2019 16:24

Although come to think of it, Brits complain about the cold too even when it's not that cold, maybe we're just a nation of complainers Grin

SecretWitch · 10/05/2019 16:25

I really wish I lived in Washington state. Lovely rain and cool temps. I hate the sun.
