To think this country has the best weather?

I honestly feel like the UK has the best weather. Not too cold, not too hot and almost always manageable. I am baffled by people who complain. I used to live in California and the heat waves could be intense, with very expensive air conditioning bills and I don't miss the burning sensation you could get when you touched a black steering wheel or sat on hot leather of a car that was parked outside. I have also spent time in Lapland and lived in Minnesota, so I know what it's like to step outside in to a cold that is painful.

AIBU to think there is no reason to complain about the weather here? I love it!

I'd have to disagree...

DinosApple · 10/05/2019 21:09

Last summer we had something like 8 weeks or more of sunshine (May-August) and not a drop of rain. I really, really missed clouds and rain by the end of it. It's definitely the changeableness that I really enjoy.

DrCoconut · 10/05/2019 22:39

It's rained almost non stop for a week here. Miserable, grey, muddy. Temperatures struggling to make double figures. And it's not really unusual. Clouds and drizzle make up too much of the weather. I hope we get some nice weather like last summer, but for a bit longer so we can enjoy it with the kids off school. Last year it had broken up by early August and was back to meh, low teens type temperatures for our holiday.

BenjiB · 10/05/2019 22:43

Uk weather is rubbish! We hardly ever get a decent summer, last year was the exception. It’s May and it’s still crap and pretty chilly most days and I live in the south. It’s the one thing I hate about this country. My friend lives in Bulgaria, cold snowy winters and hot summers .

frenchonion · 10/05/2019 22:55

Wales is very...damp! I agree in as much as you get a good mixed bag of weather from feeezing cold ans snow to the odd scorcher. I wish we had more of a run of good summer weather though. I loved last summer! British hot days are just right for me sun and temperature wise. Would be nice to have more summer consistency to be able to plan ahead for days out and bbqs etc. We do get a LOT of drizzle here in wales, but on the whole I quite like our seasons.

TapasForTwo · 10/05/2019 23:17

It clearly depends on where you live in the UK. I suspect that the posters who love our weather live further south than those of us who don't. Where I live the default weather is cold or cool, and damp, with low light levels.

We don't really get 4 seasons. It would be lovely if we did.

BlackeyedGruesome · 10/05/2019 23:20

I like our weather with not too much heat/cold. I think swedens sounds really good too, possibly better...

Fluffiest · 10/05/2019 23:24

I love British weather too. Real seasons, rain that makes everything green, a chance of a white Christmas.

True, a bit more sun would be nice but actually, I prefer dressing for milder days. Socks, jeans and jumpers are more comfy than sandals and summer dresses!

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 10/05/2019 23:28

British weather is mental & does your head in but I wouldn't swap our weather for the world.
Well what would we talk about to strangers & to pass time Grin

TapasForTwo · 10/05/2019 23:40

Fluffiest statistically we have a higher chance of a white Easter than a white Christmas. We had snow on Easter Monday last year.

MyDcAreMarvel · 10/05/2019 23:43

No we have awful weather! It’s never ever hot enough. Anything under 26 degrees is just miserable.

U2HasTheEdge · 11/05/2019 00:01

No it's bloody crap.

You can't ever plan anything. It's bloody cold in May. Most years we are lucky if we get a couple of weeks of sun. It's mostly grey. Very rarely hot enough.

Awful.

Dowser · 11/05/2019 00:05

If winter was only beginning of November till end of Feb
If spring was March 1 till May 31
If summer was June 1 sept 21
If autumn was sept 22 till Nov 1
I would be very happy...especially if summer was a constant 25 degrees
My Perfect temperature

U2HasTheEdge · 11/05/2019 00:09

What bloody seasons? It's always bloody grey and miserable. Well, except when we have some rare sunshine that is.

Miljah · 11/05/2019 00:14

I think one word sums up most British weather: grey.

The next contender is: unpredictable.

You can't plan ahead for anything; a camping trip, a BBQ. Why, in mid May, am I wearing my winter puffa, plus umbrella, for a trip to London tomorrow? Top of 14?

Why did I spend our (last ever family) camping trip, in 2010, sitting in a tent, in Devon, in late August, wearing all our clothes, as feet of rain fell around us for 7 days straight? Which is why we take a villa in Spain instead, now...😊 (The Romans were right!).

'Summer' can come- and go... in MARCH.

I lived in southern Queensland for years. The weather was entirely predictable, if sometimes extreme. V hot, often humid, but with some cracking thunderstorms, and hail, in high summer; but mild, calm, blue and pleasant in winter.

I also spent a year in Bavaria in my late teens: cold, snowy, blue-skied winters; hot, bright, blue-skied summers, swimming in the lake. Fantastic.

I gather a place with 'the best' climate is St Helena!! Never below 15, highs of 28?.

Anyway, DH and I are outta here as soon as the DC are old enough. Motorhoming around Europe.

I hate 'grey' (and wind!).

fancynancyclancy · 11/05/2019 00:15

I think we have less seasons now compared to when I was young & agree with another poster who said they have merged into one.

I do like a nice Spring day or a crisp autumn one but I would prefer if we had lower temperatures as opposed to the damp cold we seem to get. I also can’t stand when it’s really hot as it’s a sweaty, clammy heat

birdsandroses · 11/05/2019 00:16

I wish I felt like this but my perfect climate would be Mediterranean climate, seasons, but winter not too long and lots of guaranteed sunshine from March to October.

mimibunz · 11/05/2019 00:18

I dislike UK weather as I think it’s wrong to have to wear a jumper in May. Winters might be relatively mild but they go on forever.

birdsandroses · 11/05/2019 00:19

American writer, UK resident, Bill Bryson, described the English climate as akin to living inside a Tupperware bowl which captured the image of our far too frequent grey skies so well.

MissCharleyP · 11/05/2019 00:28

LagunaBubbles Yes, I’m in NW England about 20 miles from Manchester.

echt · 11/05/2019 01:20

I liked UK weather when I lived there, but then I lived in London, which in addition to being in the SE, has its own micro climate. The change of seasons is lovely too.

Now I'm in Melbourne, we still get four seasons. The best bit though is that days of overcast skies are very unusual in winter, so lots of sun to raise the sprits in the shorter days of winter.

ImaLumberJack · 11/05/2019 01:26

You keep kidding yourselves. Sunnier clines, far fewer horrible viruses.

itscallednickingbentcoppers · 11/05/2019 01:42

It's not very exciting but that's probably a good thing really. You're unlikely to die of exposure because we don't get extreme temperatures. PP is right though, virus season seems all year round here. I do enjoy a sunny, windy, warm day of the type we get in May most years. Not this year sadly Sad

yearinyearout · 11/05/2019 05:34

I love it too. I've got friends who moved abroad and are always gloating about their constant sunshine, but they have it too hot most of the year and terrible humidity. Give me the changing seasons any day of the week! I also love the feeling of joy when we do get a perfect unexpected sunny day 😁

BritWifeinUSA · 11/05/2019 05:44

I love the seasons. We have wonderful seasons here in Washington state. It’s similar to the UK but more snow in the winter and warmer, drier summers. But spring and autumn remind me of England in a good way. Today it was a bit too hot for me. It was 96 Fahrenheit (35 Celsius) today. That’s just a little over my comfort level but usually the weather here is perfect for the season.
