22 is too cold! And I've got a jumper on.

OP I sympathise. I've always said some people are toads and others lizards. And if you're a very ill lizard or even toad you will want heat.

I'm an African-born toad who has always lived in cold old houses. Temp at 19 in winter, log fire in one unheated room. I always found going for a walk kept me warmer and yes, have the lovely (?) marl leggings and top underneath stuff when I know it's going to be cold, jumpers and a variety of shawls. I haven't had CH since January. Helps keep the bills down and I sleep better

My DB is different and keeps everything on not helped by an antiquated heating system which needs to be on to provide hot water.

For PPs who say bugger the environment - do check your thermostat and your insulation. I truly think you are buggering all of us and your descendants. And if the government doesn't get its energy policy sorted out you'll have to be finding various ways of keeping warm.

teyem · 06/05/2019 13:19

I can’t believe you still have heating on - unless you live very far up north.

I'm in the NE, it snowed here on Saturday morning, it wasn't much warmer today.

RomanyQueen1 · 06/05/2019 13:35

YABU it's bad for the environment and if you have a jumper on as well, best get to the docs it's not normal.

Lol....I have recently had many blood test for a different reason but I did mention to the doctor I felt cold a lot so she added in some more bloods. No reason was found for me feeling cold so it would seem I am normal. Wink

HappyMama01 · 06/05/2019 14:19

I never have my heating on. Summer or winter lol Grin

teyem · 06/05/2019 14:22

You must be hard as nails happy.

LoafofSellotape · 06/05/2019 16:33

I'm in the NE, it snowed here on Saturday morning, it wasn't much warmer today snowed and then hailed in the Midlands too on Saturday and but any warmer now. My heating is on,it will be off when it's not as cold.

ALongHardWinter · 06/05/2019 17:21

Good grief! I'm in the SE and my heating isn't even on!

Starlight456 · 06/05/2019 17:35

Excuse my ignorance but have storage heaters so no idea how warm my house is / isn’t but they are off.

Does this mean the house is 23 degrees or it turns off at 23 degrees. I am not a warm person but a few weeks ago was sat in the canaries on a subbed at 23 degrees .

LeggyLinda · 06/05/2019 17:52

I was expecting to say YABU when I first opened this thread - what’s the point of turning it on at all if you’re only putting on at 23o? That’s still cold. But it would seem, from other replies that I am more unreasonable than you. If ours is on, it’s turned as far clockwise as possible (32+). We like it warmer than most obviously 😂

Delatron · 06/05/2019 18:05

YANBU.

It just feels so cold today and I can’t get warm. I have a coat on inside and have just turned underfloor heating up to 23.

I think it feels colder than winter! I think maybe as we got used to it being warmer a few weeks ok? I don’t understand it myself but I’m chilled to the bone. (SE England).

RoseMartha · 06/05/2019 18:06

Ours had been off for a while but i did have to turn it on saturday evening as was so cold even with layers on. Only put it on 18 though. Room temp was 15 at the time.

megletthesecond · 06/05/2019 18:17

Mine is on 20° , I'm in Hampshire and in thermals. And my feet are still cold.

TalkinPaece · 06/05/2019 18:36

I have Max/Min thermometers all over the place

DO NOT trust the thermostat to guess the temperature of your house

Isitmybathtimeyet · 06/05/2019 18:40

the environment can get to fuck

Don’t worry, it will.

RottnestFerry · 07/05/2019 11:54

Outside temperature affects how cold the house is you daft banana!

But the whole point of a thermostat is that it automatically maintains the set temperature inside at all times... regardless of how cold it gets outside.

helpfulperson · 07/05/2019 12:59

The temperature outside is irrelevant. That's the whole point of a thermostat.

If you set your thermostat to 20 degrees your heating will heat the house to 20 degrees then switch off whether the temperature outside is 25 or minus 10.

Ohyesiam · 07/05/2019 13:05

I tell my kids that if they put on two layers of wool and thick socks and are still cold , then we can put the heating above 19. We never need to put it up.

When I moved into our draughty Victorian villa I had to develop a new relationship to knitwear Smile. It’s a great excuse for cashmere.....
woolovers catalogue is really reasonable for a chunky second layer cardi. I might not wear it on a night out , but it’s great for being at home.

TalbotAMan · 07/05/2019 13:17

What sort of thermostat is it? The older dial ones weren't that accurate to start with and only got worse with age. A modern digital one is more accurate.

But as others have said, what matters is the actual temperature in the room, not what the thermostat says it is. You need a couple of decent room thermometers to find out what the temperature really is.

Apart from global warming, the hotter you have it, the greater you're heating bill. The bigger the difference between the inside and outside temperatures the more heat you will use and the more gas (or whatever you have) you will need to burn to keep the inside at that temperature.

Even so, I have a temperature in here today that is somewhere between 19 and 20 and it's feeling cold, perhaps psychologically because it's been as dull as ditchwater.

safariboot · 07/05/2019 23:12

*The temperature outside is irrelevant. That's the whole point of a thermostat.

If you set your thermostat to 20 degrees your heating will heat the house to 20 degrees*

The thermostat only knows the temperature where it is. If the thermostat is in a well insulated area like a hall or landing, then the rooms more exposed to the outside can get colder when it's cold out.

YesQueen · 08/05/2019 00:15

If you're really cold can I recommend the fail safe "grans method"?
Feet in washing up bowl of hot water and mustard powder. Hot drink while you do this.

Works for even cold to the bone feeling and I was sweating within 5 mins and opening windows Grin it's my foolproof solution for when I've got drenched riding or out walking. I laughed at my gran until I tried it and the sweat was pouring off me

LadyRannaldini · 08/05/2019 06:44

You sound like children I used to teach who didn't understand the idea of dressing for the weather, they expected to be in short sleeves all year round! We're in the East of England, I'm sitting in pj's and it's warm enough with no heating.

FrowningFlamingo · 08/05/2019 07:06

Our new house thermostat shows 2 degrees above the gro egg temp while in our old house they tracked exactly. So OP might not be as toasty as you think if theirs is similar.
Check insulation, wear sensible clothes (doesn't need to be a ski suit but walking around in vest and shorts with the heating on is just irresponsible), move about the house more should all help.

Arnoldthecat · 08/05/2019 07:08

You only pay for a jumper once. You pay for gas all the time that stat is too high...

Acis · 08/05/2019 08:07

If I'm the only person in the house, I work on the basis that I will only heat the room I'm in, unless it's really bitterly cold. Otherwise 20 degrees is fine for the thermostat.
