Like this one. DD is 11 and thinks IABU.

It's a no from me, it's a bit too old for an 11yr old

Eliza9919 · 05/05/2019 19:28

I wouldn't let my 11yr old wear it, but then I wouldn't let them wear those awful shorts that finish at the bottom of the bum cheek, or even worse, show bum cheek.

I think the way some kids walk around is disgraceful. It shows such low self esteem and lack of self respect imo. And I'm talking about the young, young, girls that roll their school skirts so short you can see their arse hanging out. Bare legs with it in the winter too.

I don't care what all the 'cool' ppl think, I judge when I see that.

UnexpectedItemInShaggingArea · 05/05/2019 19:29

I think there is a world of difference between ensuring your kids are wearing age appropriate clothes / non sexualised clothing and putting the onus on a child to avoid inappropriate attention.

Certainly I can distinguish between the two, although it can get harder in the tweens.

Not appropriate for a kid.

InTheHeatofLisbon · 05/05/2019 19:36

I genuinely fail to see how a vest without straps is sexualised though. That's my point.

If it had padding and bra cups, aye ok I'd see that. If it didn't cover her from armpits to belly button and had massive cutouts I'd see it.

But honestly, it just looks like a top without straps to me.

BettysLeftTentacle · 05/05/2019 19:39

So back to the beginning, why isn’t this top not age appropriate?

speakout · 05/05/2019 19:42

I really don't get it.

A small summer top on a child.

How is that wrong?

Mummyoflittledragon · 05/05/2019 19:56

I genuinely fail to see how a best without straps is sexualised though.

I think another name for a top like this is a boob tube. I find young girls and tweens in them uncomfortable. Ditto crop tops.

Yabbers · 05/05/2019 20:03

@BettysLeftTentacle

I’m sure there’s plenty of clothes that you might choose that I would think look awful @yabbers. Should you stop wearing them immediately because I think they look crap?

No, but this isn’t about you not liking my clothes, it’s about whether a mum should allow her 11 year old to wear something.

ICE50 · 05/05/2019 20:21

I think my DD bought one of these when she was 15. She usually wears it under a jacket.

I'm not opposed to an 11 year old buying one - chances are they'd wear it very occasionally anyway and therefore it's a non-issue.

It becomes more of any issue by not allowing them to buy it.
