Like this one. DD is 11 and thinks IABU.

I wouldnt like it.

But im not a fan of belly tops on my 10 year old either!

SarahTancredi · 05/05/2019 16:01

Would 2 thin straps make that much difference?

It's a top .

If she wants to wear it if let her if it fits ok.

ourkidmolly · 05/05/2019 16:01

No don't like it at all on very young girls. Guess that makes me uncool or something on here. It looks like you need a chest so it's too unnaturally sexy if you don't. Probably 14.

Bluetrews25 · 05/05/2019 16:04

Why are you against it?
Worried about boys pulling it down?
Worried it shows too much of curves? So would a tight T shirt be banned too?
Confused

MaybeitsMaybelline · 05/05/2019 16:07

I think it’s fine for holidays in the warmth, but not for walking down the high street in May.

AlaskanOilBaron · 05/05/2019 16:09

I wouldn't like it. I don't have an 11 year old daughter so I don't know much about these things.

Shoxfordian · 05/05/2019 16:10

I think its fine

Quartz2208 · 05/05/2019 16:10

Yes all about context - on holiday abroad perfectly fine - but not for day to day wear

blackteasplease · 05/05/2019 16:11

How would it ever stay up? Strapless tops have never stayed up on me unless when breastfeeding!

Its the model's expression that's ridiculous rather than the top i think.

WindsweptEgret · 05/05/2019 16:11

13, unless they had an unbuttoned shirt over it to cover their shoulders. If it was warm enough for a strapless top then they would need something over it for sun protection. 11 is not old enough to decide they want to risk getting sunburn or skin cancer.

Birdie6 · 05/05/2019 16:12

My DD 12 wears them. They don't need boobs to hold them up - there is a strip of silicone along the top which sort of adheres to the skin, the top stays up all day.

AlbertWinestein · 05/05/2019 16:15

Hell no for an 11 year old and I don’t care if that makes me Totally Uncool Mum. I can’t be that uncommon as I don’t know anyone who would buy this for their 11 year old either.

LillithsFamiliar · 05/05/2019 16:20

My DF was as puritanical as they come but I had summer tops like that when I was your DD's age.
I don't understand how straps would magically transform it from unacceptable to acceptable.

ourkidmolly · 05/05/2019 16:20

My dd is 12 and she nor none of her friends would wear this. I'm not sure they'd want to wear it. They wear leggings and T-shirts with slogans with expensive trainers and do elaborate plaits in their hair.

ginghamtablecloths · 05/05/2019 16:21

I'm not keen on strapless tops - anyone with a bosom could find them a bit unsafe! As for shoulders being thought sexy - they are if you live in a culture where everything is normally covered up. On a sunny day her shoulders could burn after a short time in the heat.

Mums are meant to be uncool.

WyfOfBathe · 05/05/2019 16:22

I wouldn't have a problem with strapless at 11. DD (7) often wears tops with thin straps, as do most girls that age. I don't think this is really that different.

BettysLeftTentacle · 05/05/2019 16:23

It doesn’t make you uncool to not like it. It makes you weird for sexualising a child though. Unless there’s another, less obvious reason you’re against that particular top.

It’s depreasing. No wonder our young ladies are under so much pressure to conform to how other people say they should look.

optimisticpessimist01 · 05/05/2019 16:29

oooooo showing off her shoulders?! We must alert the village elders!!

YABU OP, as long as if fits right and stays up, there should be no problem. If it was very low cut then that would be a different story entirely.

ourkidmolly · 05/05/2019 16:32

@BettysLeftTentacle
It's about not being sexualised. It's about why we think cropped tops, strapless tops and tight mini skirts are ok for pre pubescent girls when it stops them playing and reduces their freedom of movement. A boy wouldn't wear that in a million years. Why do we encourage it on young girls?

WindsweptEgret · 05/05/2019 16:35

I don't understand how straps would magically transform it from unacceptable to acceptable. I see neither of these to be acceptable sun protection for wearing outside in summer. With a loose shirt on top, fine, but not on their own.

RedSheep73 · 05/05/2019 16:37

I wouldn't let my 11yo dd wear that - mainly because it's yellow, really, but yes I do think it looks too grown up. I've had this conversation with her over inappropriate tops and tried to explain about unwanted male attention...not sure she got it but 11 is still an age where I can overrule, I think.

User11011 · 05/05/2019 16:38

Whenever she wants. Why not? Because it's her responsibility to cover up as boys aren't capable of controlling their urges round a bare shoulder? 😂

User11011 · 05/05/2019 16:41

Jesus - please stop educating your daughters about "unwanted male attention" - they aren't male. Educate your sons about it and how to be respectful regardless of what the other human being is wearing.

AnnaComnena · 05/05/2019 16:41

On a sunny day her shoulders could burn after a short time in the heat.

Not could, burn, would burn. Wouldn't even need to be sunny. I got very badly burned one day as a teenager because it was overcast and I didn't think I needed to cover up. If she bought it, I'd be insisting she wore a loose shirt over it when out.

SarahTancredi · 05/05/2019 16:42

Nice way to make sure she knows it's her fault ...

Fyi this unwanted Male attention happens whether you are in trackies and an oversized hoody. In a full length coat. Please make sure your dd knows if she walks down the street in a sodding bikini its NOT HER FAULT
