Frasier Was Better Than Friends

Niles with baby the bird stuck on his head. Niles setting fire to Frasier's apartment. Niles scoring from the halfway line. Kelsey Grammer's wonderful overacting. The lovely autumnal colours. The clever dialogue. The list goes on

Niles and Daphne were better than Ross and Rachel.

Aibu? No I'm not 😀

And the all-time best line, when Niles guest-hosts Frasier's show:

"Frasier is a Freudian, but I am a Jungian, so there'll be no blaming Mother today!"

NoTheresa · 04/05/2019 23:52

And Bulldog at the radio station. Comedy gold.

OccidentalPurist · 04/05/2019 23:53

I remember often fantasising about living a similar life to Frasier. Maybe not presenting on radio, but involved in it, living in his apartment and enjoying all the cultural pursuits in Seattle that were featured.

Although I was pretty much the same age as the Friends characters, I never fantasised about being them for some reason. Maybe it was a lot to do with their grotty apartment!

SrSteveOskowski · 04/05/2019 23:57

"The next time I find something interesting in your father's underwear drawer, I'm just going to sit on it!"

rosenylund · 05/05/2019 00:02

I've been on annual leave for a few weeks and have watched Frasier right through for the first time since it was on.

Still stands up and though I love Friends, Frasier is so much better. In later series Martin Crane comes out with some stuff I now view as a bit creepy, but in general I love it.

Absofrigginlootly · 05/05/2019 00:04

Nile’s is my favourite character, I used to have a bit of a crush on him back in the day! Love his snappy one liners

Favourite quote

Cherie (martins girlfriend) “laughter is the best medicine”

Niles (under his breath) “we must be in the placebo group”

starryeyedsnowgirl · 05/05/2019 00:07

Friends has dated and if I hadn’t liked it as a child I’m not sure I would like it now.

Frasier is my ultimate comfort tv and my mum and I quote bits all the time. It’s the build up- episodes which get ridiculous because of the was something escalates.

Like the three mrs cranes where daphne wants rid of an old ex so pretends to be married to niles p. He likes it so invites him to stay for dinner. They explain to Martin but suggest he leaves as he doesn’t have the wits to keep up and he is offended so makes it hard by pretending to be an astronaut and when roz knocks on the door says “while what do you know- it’s Maris”. Everything so cleverly leads to everything else.

And brilliant one liners- “ in my defence a real baby would have cried before it burst into flames.”

Love it!!

Bluestitch · 05/05/2019 00:12

Like the three mrs cranes where daphne wants rid of an old ex so pretends to be married to niles p.

Love that episode. Although poor Clive challenges Dick Van Dyke to the worst cockney accent of all time. And he's supposed to be from Manchester!

TheValeyard · 05/05/2019 00:14

When Niles is preparing for fatherhood with a bag of flour:

Niles: I was vigorously air-conducting to a Brahms concerto and inadvertently ran him through.

Frasier: What young father doesn't tell that story?

WatcherintheRye · 05/05/2019 01:02

Love Frasier. Never tire of it on continuous loop on morning tv! The sophisticated witty writing and completely believable warmth and connection between the characters is unique imo. Not a surprise that some of the cast were close irl. Add to that the genius physical humour typified by 'The Inkeepers' episode, (which I think is my favourite!), and you have an unbeatable mix. vampirethriller · 05/05/2019 07:21

Frasier was so much better. (apart from the misogyny and Daphne and her family.) Niles was the best.

Meangirls36 · 05/05/2019 07:39

Bonus points if you remember side show bob and his brother

Constance1234 · 05/05/2019 08:49

Sideshow Cecil! :)

Dieu · 05/05/2019 09:00

My parents would watch Frasier back in the day, but never Friends. Frasier was proper, grown up comedy.

MNOverinvestor · 05/05/2019 10:44

I sometimes wonder if the British accent mangling of Frasier, especially in the later series, was an elaborate in-joke (similar to Bulldog being homophobic, yet played by one of the first publically out US actors) - the senior producer Maggie Blanc is 'of British descent'... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maggie_Blanc

Mummyshark2019 · 05/05/2019 10:45

Nope!

lottiegarbanzo · 05/05/2019 10:47

Yes, I wonder if it was some sort of joke about Americans not being able to hear the difference, or even that there is a difference, between different British accents. I've heard this claim in real life, a few times. So a parody of American ideas about the British.

“It’s Bebe! If you said you liked my eyes, they'd be on your desk tomorrow in a Tiffany box!“

WatcherintheRye

Thank you. Thank you for posting this and for the belly laugh today. This too is one of my very favorites.

“Now, quick! Niles! Kill five eels!”

Absolutely. Priceless.

flowery · 05/05/2019 19:33

“I barely had time to grab my pantaloons and buckle my swash!”

prettybird · 06/05/2019 10:51

Should I admit that dh and I weren't actually that keen on the first episode of Frasier, commenting that it wasn't as good as Cheers Shock

Just shows how the skill and brilliance of the show was the way that it built the characters and the ensemble of the core actors Smile (I agree with the opinions stated earlier with the exception of Daphne's family - I always just get irritated by them Hmm)

maddiemookins16mum · 06/05/2019 11:10

Frasier is timeless comedy. Friends was just silly.

ShatnersWig · 06/05/2019 11:15

Never got beyond one episode of Friends. I thought it was the biggest pile of shite imaginable and I never understood its appeal at the time. Frasier, on the other hand, was wonderful and I still watch the repeats now and find it still brilliantly witty, superbly played. Yes, a bit of a dip after Daphne and Niles got together and too much of Mrs Moon that one series (although the hideous Simon played by Anthony LaPaglia from Without A Trace was a fabulous creation), but it came back up again for the final series and, quite honestly, Frasier not as its very best still wiped the floor with every other sitcom of the time.

randomchap · 06/05/2019 11:18

I like the way that the minor characters in Frasier weren't overused. Bulldog, Gil, and Bebe are in surprisingly few episodes considering how much of an impact they had on the series.

Bebe trying to seduce Frasier is one of the funniest scenes

ShatnersWig · 06/05/2019 11:23

@Random. Agree, they knew when to use them and to use them well.
