To do this in a hotel?

I stayed at a hotel last night for a birthday weekend away for a friend, there were 14 of us in total. At breakfast after checking out, my DH mentioned to the group that I had tidied the room before leaving (put used towels in the bath, tidied the toiletries on the side and threw all rubbish away and tied up the bag) then stripped the bed. 12 out of the 14 friends think this is crazy and that it's the maids job. I understand where they're coming from but I had ten minutes spare so thought I'd make their job a little easier. They still think I'm barmy.

Who is BU here? I'm getting quite a lot of stick for something I didn't think was that much of a big deal!

I always do the same as you OP

tanpestryfirescreen · 03/05/2019 13:17

Towels in bath - normal
bed stripping- not normal, would indicate that you are trying to hide stains?

seastargirl · 03/05/2019 13:18

I always think if you strip the bed they'll think your hiding an accident!

VeraWangTwang · 03/05/2019 13:18

I put the towels in the bath but don't strip the bed

ChessieFL · 03/05/2019 13:19

I leave the room tidy, towels in bath etc. but I wouldn’t strip the bed or tie up the bin bag.

modgepodge · 03/05/2019 13:19

I detest changing bed sheets so much it’s the top of the list of jobs for my cleaner at home - no way would I even consider it in a hotel!!!!

BlueMerchant · 03/05/2019 13:20

I tidy a little bit (make sure all rubbish properly in bin, towels neat over bath etc) but would never strip the bed. For some unknown reason I actually make it before I leaveGrin

Somuchchocolatesolittletime · 03/05/2019 13:20

Oh god... I didn't think of that. If they check they'll realise there are obviously no stains but if not ... Imagine what they might think Blush I don't always do it, just if I have a spare 5 minutes before checking out.

I make sure rubbish is in bins, leave towels in the bath and make the beds in a rudimentary fashion including putting back the multitude of cushions there always seem to be Grin

I wouldn’t strip the bed.

Purpleartichoke · 03/05/2019 13:21

If nothing else, binning rubbish and grouping toiletries makes it easier for you to spot if you left something behind. Plus it’s just good manners.

Don’t strip the bed though. Makes it harder for housekeeping to see if something is mixed up in the sheets.

Cath2907 · 03/05/2019 13:22

I routinely do all but strip the bed. I used to be a chambermaid when being a student. It is amazing how horrible the mess is that people leave in hotel rooms. Dirty pants in the middle of the floor, used condoms on the floor, poop in the loo, etc.. I would not want my chambermaid thinking of me what I used to think of those customers.

Nesssie · 03/05/2019 13:22

I tidy and put used towels in the bath but wouldn't strip the bed.

Somuchchocolatesolittletime · 03/05/2019 13:26

Ok ... From now on I won't strip the bed. Glad I'm not the only one who does a general tidy though. I dread to think what sort of mess the other rooms were left in!

OP posts:
PamelaX · 03/05/2019 13:28

I wouldn't strip the bed either My hotel rooms are never a huge mess because I naturally wouldn't leave rubbish or a mess everywhere but I would never clean or tidy a hotel room or a holiday rental.

Still18atheart · 03/05/2019 13:29

Rubbish is in bin, towel is in shower/ bath, made bed as opposed to strip it.

NCforthis2019 · 03/05/2019 13:31

You’re a very kind person and your intentions good. I used to work in a hotel and believe me - some people are filthy. I would have done everything you said bar stripping the beds.

Gratefulbeyond103 · 03/05/2019 13:31

Strip the bed for what? You are crazy. Are you on holiday or at home.

Buttons4me · 03/05/2019 13:33

I used to be a chambermaid and would always appreciate people leaving the rooms tidy but if someone stripped the bed I would think they were trying to hide stains.

Gruzinkerbell1 · 03/05/2019 13:34

Towels - yes
Rubbish - yes
Strip the beds - no

YouBelongHere · 03/05/2019 13:35

My Uncle's wife works as a hotel cleaner and my Mum once asked her what the most helpful thing you can do when you check-out. She said stripping the bed saves her tons of time so since then me and my Mum have always done that.

I'm with you OP, not that weird to tidy up after yourself and make the maids life a bit easier.

IsYourGoogleBroken · 03/05/2019 13:36

I doubt they care - the bedding will go straight to the industrial launderette, no one will be examining it.

All rubbish in bins, all used towels in bath but yes, stripping the bed is a step too far.

BagofTeeth · 03/05/2019 13:36

I don't strip the bed but always tidy the room and put towels in the bath or shower. I then go through the room methodically just to double check we haven't left anything in a drawer or high shelf, or there isn't any rubbish (or socks, DH is good at this) that's fallen under the bed.

bigbadbadger · 03/05/2019 13:36

I wouldn't strip the bed but I do put towels in the bath and leave it tidy because I am polite :)

NunoGoncalves · 03/05/2019 13:38

I dread to think what sort of mess the other rooms were left in!

Why, what were people doing in there?

I would hang my towel to dry after using it, so I'd have no need to move that anywhere. Rubbish I put in the bin as and when, just like I do everywhere else.

Preggosaurus9 · 03/05/2019 13:38

I strip beds and tidy put away rubbish etc. Not to hide stains just to make maid's lives easier, it must be a crap job.

Who really cares what staff think about you in a hotel anyway?! You're on holiday, live a little Grin
