To do this in a hotel?

I stayed at a hotel last night for a birthday weekend away for a friend, there were 14 of us in total. At breakfast after checking out, my DH mentioned to the group that I had tidied the room before leaving (put used towels in the bath, tidied the toiletries on the side and threw all rubbish away and tied up the bag) then stripped the bed. 12 out of the 14 friends think this is crazy and that it's the maids job. I understand where they're coming from but I had ten minutes spare so thought I'd make their job a little easier. They still think I'm barmy.

Who is BU here? I'm getting quite a lot of stick for something I didn't think was that much of a big deal!

I wouldn't strip the beds but I'd do everything else that you did. It's respectful. No need to make the maid's job harder than it needs to be.

PamelaX · 03/05/2019 13:40

I dread to think what sort of mess the other rooms were left in!

why should there be mess in the first place? For example where on earth do you put your rubbish if you need to throw them away when you check-out?

viques · 03/05/2019 13:40

Towels in bath. Toilet flushed .Rubbish in bins including any toiletries I have opened but am not taking home. Bed covers pulled back so the mattress has time to air. If possible I open windows too. But that's it.

bagpiss · 03/05/2019 13:41

I tidy and bin any rubbish, towels in bath but I've never stripped the bed. I'd think they'd think I was hiding something Confusedlol

SciFiScream · 03/05/2019 13:41

I strip the beds but only because I'm generally looking for lost items amongst the bedding. Cuddly toys, lego, bed clothes.

I only strip the beds when I'm travelling with children. When it's just me (or me + DH) I know where everything is!

I do the towels in bath.

Don't do anything with the bin though.

I strip the bed is a DC has a nose bleed - which occasionally happens in a hotel. As I don't think they should have to touch it.

Of course use the bin and put towels in the bath.

Magmatic80 · 03/05/2019 13:42

Don’t strip the bed. The maids have 19 minutes to clean a room, working out which bit of bed linen is which won’t help. Putting used towels in the bath does though, so they know which are clean and can be left Smile

MrsBailey2be · 03/05/2019 13:43

I always make sure the hotel room looks how it did when I arrived, I tidy up, get rid of rubbish, fold the towels & place them on the floor, make the bed etc. I'd hate to leave it messy.

I wouldn't ever strip the bed though, that's just weird Grin

yearinyearout · 03/05/2019 13:43

I put towels in the bath and all rubbish in the bin, that's sufficient I think.

DizzySue · 03/05/2019 13:44

I do everything you do OP, except strip the bed (id also worry they thought I was hiding soiled sheetsBlush)

NunoGoncalves · 03/05/2019 13:44

why should there be mess in the first place? For example where on earth do you put your rubbish if you need to throw them away when you check-out?

Right? Like, do you just chuck rubbish all over the floor until you clean it up just before check-out? Why not just put it in the bin in the first place?

Once I've packed all my clothes and things into my suitcase/bag, the room is tidy anyway. Rubbish is already in the bin, towels are already hanging in the bathroom.

MaybeitsMaybelline · 03/05/2019 13:46

I do all those OP except strip the bed. The only time I did strip the bed was when I bled on it during the night and thought that was unpleasant for the housekeeper. I don’t call them maids that’s an awful term.

Normal hotel etiquette to put used towels that need replacing in the bath or shower tray.

Servalan · 03/05/2019 13:47

I was a hotel chambermaid in my teens. It's really horrible, tiring work.

The state people used to leave their rooms in was often totally vile.

Op - you are lovely! Flowers

Babdoc · 03/05/2019 13:47

I always strip the bed if I have time, and fold the sheet, pillow cases and duvet cover separately so the maid can see it’s all there and not been pinched. I leave the bathroom the way I’d want to find it and leave the chambermaid a tip with a note saying thank you in the local language.
They have a shit job on minimum wage, and I’ve had a lovely holiday, with them keeping my room beautiful throughout. I’ve stayed in some hotels where the maids scatter fresh rose petals on the bed each morning. I think they deserve some appreciation in return.

Poppyinafieldofdreams · 03/05/2019 13:48

I always do that. Leave no footsteps. I tidy up and clean the place as it was when we arrived.

Megan2018 · 03/05/2019 13:49

Stripping a hotel bed is weird.

I leave towels in the bath at the end of a stay, but that's it.

I'd put rubbish in bins as I go as a matter of course - but wouldn't tie the bag. They might sort it for recyclables.

OwlBeThere · 03/05/2019 13:49

'poop in the loo'

where else are you meant to do it???

Ginkythefangedhellpigofdoom · 03/05/2019 13:50

I strip the bed if I have time but that's because I used to work as a chambermaid (as it was called then) and it saved loads of time if someone had done it when I went in.

Rubbish in the bin and cups not being left half full of coffee/tea was helpful too.

As for stains well there there if it's stripped or not! Much better than a shit dropped right in the middle of the bed!

There's no rules though as long as someone didn't deliberately do things to make me heave.

Purplecatshopaholic · 03/05/2019 13:50

General tidy up, defo yes. Towels in bath, yes. Strip bed, no.

whatnow40 · 03/05/2019 13:50

I don't strip the bed in hotels, but do the rest. I strip the bed if it's somewhere like butlins, centre parks or a caravan. I always book to have sheets etc included but figure the extra work of stripping the bed isn't included in the cleaners time allowance. I don't want to make it harder for them, but I'd expect a hotel to have managed the time allocation differently. Now I think I've been over thinking it! Grin

janeybumtum · 03/05/2019 13:53

I was always brought up to be considerate of anyone cleaning/tidying and not to make their job more difficult.
My stbxh was a complete embarrassment the way he thought it was ok to leave hotel rooms a bomb site. One of the final straws was the complete lack of respect he had towards our cleaner.

When staying I always make sure nothing such as pjamas have been left in the bed so don't get lost, I keep my dirty laundry in a drawstring bag at the bottom of the wardrobe and I keep the room tidy so cleaning it doesn't take unnecessarily long (I do the same re my cleaner at home - she's there to clean, not pick up after me like a servant)

When I leave a hotel room I leave the duvet folded over, make sure all rubbish is in the bin and tie the bag and all towels are in a bundle in the bath. That way I can see very quickly if I've left something behind. I know hotel maids aren't very well paid and have a difficult enough job already and it's not nice to make it harder than necessary.

I don't strip the beds because I don't have any idea whether they have a particular way of sorting out the bedsheets and I assume they will think I'm trying to hide stains.

cleanasawhistle · 03/05/2019 13:55

I do the same as you OP

If I can my someones day easier by helping out a little then I will.

MashPotatoMashPotato · 03/05/2019 13:56

I tidy up to the extent that I put all our rubbish in the bin, dirty glasses/cups together and dirty towels in the bath. I’ve never started stripping beds though.

Nanny0gg · 03/05/2019 13:57

I put towels in the bath. Throw rubbish away and throw the bedding back. I would never make the bed nor strip it.
