To do this in a hotel?

I stayed at a hotel last night for a birthday weekend away for a friend, there were 14 of us in total. At breakfast after checking out, my DH mentioned to the group that I had tidied the room before leaving (put used towels in the bath, tidied the toiletries on the side and threw all rubbish away and tied up the bag) then stripped the bed. 12 out of the 14 friends think this is crazy and that it's the maids job. I understand where they're coming from but I had ten minutes spare so thought I'd make their job a little easier. They still think I'm barmy.

Who is BU here? I'm getting quite a lot of stick for something I didn't think was that much of a big deal!

I always put dirty towels in the bath, and tidy up any rubbish etc into the bin and stack dirty crockery etc

I wouldn't strip the beds, but it's not that weird to do so I guess.

Ski4130 · 03/05/2019 14:41

PS I was a chamber maid in a very naice hotel in my youth, I saw some pretty grim/dirty behaviour from guests, which may have pushed me the other way when I stay anywhere, and I try to be as tidy as possible!

grumpyyetgorgeous · 03/05/2019 14:42

Yes I leave it nice and tidy, have you seen these tv programmes where they show you the time pressures on the staff involved? They have so little time and targets to meet. I always think it's nice to leave them with a Room that they can sort out quickly and easily. I don't strip the bed though.

StealthPolarBear · 03/05/2019 14:42

If you rinse out the cups they may think they're unused. Same for if you fold the towels neatly or make the bed. Bleurgh.

CammieKennaway · 03/05/2019 14:42

Reading other posts and I think I'll stop stripping the beds too.
Never even considered that they might think I'd left something grim (although my husband did once spill an entire mug of tea in a hotel bed and when it dried to my utter horror it did indeed look like a big pee stain)

SansasSnatch · 03/05/2019 14:43

I’ve always stripped the bed - takes a few mins and I think it’s helpful!

sundowners · 03/05/2019 14:44

My brother works in a hotel. You wouldn't believe the utter state a lot of people leave the room in - if I described some of it you wouldn't want to eat dinner- seriously Angry

EntirelyAnonymised · 03/05/2019 14:46

Towels in the bath, yes but I never strip the bed. I do think that’s a bit strange, tbh.

Strugglingtodomybest · 03/05/2019 14:51

I leave the room tidy and leave a tip, but I'm not stripping the bed, that's a step too far imo.

whyohwhyowhydididoit · 03/05/2019 14:54

I tidy up, rubbish in bins, towels piled up etc. I’ve never stripped the bed. I hate that job enough in my own house!

I’ve never stripped the bed apart from places like Center Parcs or caravans. But yes to the rest. Tidy and as we found it.

Honeybee85 · 03/05/2019 14:56

I always make sure any garbage like used tissues, empty water bottles etc are in the bin, towels are put together on the bed or in the bath, I left no hairs/make up stains in the sink etc. I dont clean but make sure the housekeeping staff does not have to clean more then they normally would and that it’s tidy. I learned from my parents that it’s a matter of respect, just like I would not leave peedrops on a public toilet seat (I always squat and sometimes make a mistake) so that somebody else would have to clean up my dirty mess.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 03/05/2019 14:57

Towels in the bath, rubbish in the bin, I wouldn't think about doing anything more than that, though.

ZippyBungleandGeorge · 03/05/2019 14:58

I stay in hotels week in week out for work usually for four or five nights at a time. I tidy any rubbish and put it in the bin, towels in the bath make sure things are generally clean eg used coffee mugs on the tray or by the coffee machine, if there's a mark from a tea cup or make up etc I'd wipe it away with a baby wipe. I always make the bed, I don't know why, I guess so they don't think I'm a complete slob, especially as I revisit some hotels often enough for the staff to recognise me. Most of my colleagues are the same. I don't know anyone who goes so far as stripping the bed though!

1forAll74 · 03/05/2019 15:03

I think that everything that you did in your hotel room was quite normal,I would do those kind of things myself. Lots of people, especially women, like to leave things all tidied up.

TheOrigRightsofwomen · 03/05/2019 15:04

Towels in bath.
Rubbish in bin.
Separate used and unused complimentary toiletries.
The only time I stripped the bed was when my period did a surprise early arrival overnight.

It makes sense to have a bit of a tidy as you're packing up, to make sure you haven't left anything.

starfishmummy · 03/05/2019 15:07

Thus reminds me of staying in hotels with my parents when I was younger.

Days when we were staying another night mum pulled the bedcovers up but not tucked in. This was supposed to indicate that we were staying (at least) another night. Last morning she would pull the top covers down to the bottom of the bed indicating that we were leaving!! I'm sure the staff had a list or something!!

I do not do this!!

Ribeebie · 03/05/2019 15:07

I do everything you've mentioned apart from stripping the bed. Hopefully makes that room just a little quicker for housekeeping and takes me a couple of minutes. Plus it's easier to see if you've forgotten to pack anything

TheNumberfaker · 03/05/2019 15:09

Used towels together, rubbish in bin - that’s enough, you don’t need to strip beds.
That is a big help to housekeeping.
It was my vacation job for a few years at university.

Qweenbee · 03/05/2019 15:10

I put the rubbish in the bins but don't tie them up and I don't make the bed. I do leave it tidy though.

Omzlas · 03/05/2019 15:15

I make sure our lube bottles are all in the bed, any signs of our S&M stuff are moved and towels are in the bath. I don't strip the bed though.

starfishmummy · 03/05/2019 15:15

I don't strip the bed. Don't want to find I have been sleeping with any horrors (watched too many episodes of four in a bed)

joystir59 · 03/05/2019 15:16

I do as you do OP except I don't usually strip the bed as it's too much effort

NewMum19344567 · 03/05/2019 15:17

Stripping the bed would insinuate to the cleaners that you did something really messy. Everything else is normal IMO
