To do this in a hotel?

I stayed at a hotel last night for a birthday weekend away for a friend, there were 14 of us in total. At breakfast after checking out, my DH mentioned to the group that I had tidied the room before leaving (put used towels in the bath, tidied the toiletries on the side and threw all rubbish away and tied up the bag) then stripped the bed. 12 out of the 14 friends think this is crazy and that it's the maids job. I understand where they're coming from but I had ten minutes spare so thought I'd make their job a little easier. They still think I'm barmy.

Who is BU here? I'm getting quite a lot of stick for something I didn't think was that much of a big deal!

I wouldn't strip the beds in a hotel but I probably would in a holiday cottage. I used to work in a B&B and anyone who stripped the bed before leaving was very welcome to come back Grin I always tidy though and put towels in the bath

FenellaMaxwell · 03/05/2019 14:08

I don’t strip the beds but I do tidy

Shopkinsdoll · 03/05/2019 14:11

Not silly at all, shows you have respect. When we go away in a caravan and lodge, my partner even hoovers lol. Draw the line in getting the bleach out haha.

TeenTimesTwo · 03/05/2019 14:12

I strip the beds in self catering places, but not hotels.
We throw rubbish away, but wouldn't tie up the bags (what if the cleaner wants to throw something else away mid room clean?)

RickOShay · 03/05/2019 14:13

I strip the bed.
I used to be a chambermaid and was so grateful for people who did.
Please strip Grin

AlletrixLeStrange · 03/05/2019 14:14

I strip the bed too. I think it stems from our childhood haven like caravan holidays where you had to strip the bedding and put it into a bag before leaving. I always do the other things you do too it takes 5 minutes and makes the maids life easier. Why should they have to clean up grown adults rubbish?

AlexanderHamiltonsleftshoe · 03/05/2019 14:17

I work in housekeeping. I love when people strip the bed. Saves a couple of minutes for us and time is usually tight. Every minute counts. Thank you! anyone I've worked with in housekeeping were always happy seeing a stripped bed. Never thought about someone staining the sheets to be honest.

Branleuse · 03/05/2019 14:20

i think its good if you strip the bed as at least you know theyll change it for the next person and not just make it up again

Inmyvestandpants · 03/05/2019 14:24

I once had a period leak in bed at a cottage on the last night we were there. I scrubbed the sheets with soap and water to get out most of the blood, and left them soaking in the bath with an apologetic note saying that I had done my best to remove the stains, and hoped they would come out fully in the wash.

My main point of pride here is that I coined the phrase "lady's excuse me" to describe a period leak (it was originally a dance where the ladies were permitted to cut in) and I just wanted to let you know, and encourage you to use the term yourselves.

@Somuchchocolatesolittletime

As someone who knows half a dozen people who work in a hotel (in housekeeping,) I think you are a gem. 😘

The housekeepers get SOOOO little time to clean up/turn around rooms in these hotels, and they get scolded (by management) if they don't clean every bloody last bit of each room. Their job is tough and physical and tedious.

They also have some customers who are utter filth-bags, and wreck the joint and leave shit everywhere, making their workload much bigger. So any customers who help by cleaning up the room a bit, throwing rubbish away, and throwing the towels in the shower, and suchlike, are REALLY appreciated.

You sound lovely, and very kind OP. The world would be a better place with more people like you in it. 😊 There is probably no need to strip the bed though!

The80sweregreat · 03/05/2019 14:27

I always leave a hotel room tidy.
It's just good manners and helps the cleaners too. I can imagine that most people don't though.

Nancydrawn · 03/05/2019 14:27

Tidy the room.

Tip generously.

Lozz22 · 03/05/2019 14:28

I do all that but instead of stripping the bed at the end of my stay I just fold the duvet or sheets down to the end of the bed but leave the bottom sheet on. I remember once when I was away and I was going through a chemical pregnancy and I woke up soaked through in blood which had gone straight through the pad and also went all over the bedding. I was mortified because I was staying in a premier inn at the time. Thankfully I saw the cleaner outside so just explained what had happened

Yabbers · 03/05/2019 14:28

working out which bit of bed linen is which won’t help.

That makes no sense. Is all going in laundry. As an ex housekeeper, I loved it when folk stripped the beds.

goldenchicken · 03/05/2019 14:30

Just asked one of the people I know who works in a hotel (in housekeeping..) She said she WOULD appreciate the bed being stripped.

Crack on OP!. Grin

ShabbyAbby · 03/05/2019 14:33

Rubbish in bins, towels in a pile or in the bath, I also wash up the mugs (or if in a hurry just rinse them or leave them in the sink)

I don't strip the beds though

EllaEllaE · 03/05/2019 14:33

I always tidy up and make the bed when I leave a hotel. I would have thought it weird to strip the beed too.

But after reading all the comments here from people who have worked in hotels, I'll start doing it from now on!

StealthPolarBear · 03/05/2019 14:33

Why would you put the towels neatly on the bath or make the bed!
I agree with most, rubbish in bin and toilet flushed is normal anyway! Generally tidied with towels in Bath. No bed stripping!

StealthPolarBear · 03/05/2019 14:34

Again why and how would you wash up mugs?!

SrSteveOskowski · 03/05/2019 14:37

I always leave the room clean and tidy, would put all rubbish in the bin and towels in the bath, but I wouldn't strip the bed.

I shared a twin room with a friend of mine a few years ago. I had to clean the bath after her before I could use it as she left it dirty and covered in hair after shaving Hmm

She said "Its the maids job to clean up after me. I'm not doing her work for her".
She wasn't too happy when I told her that all the maid should have to do is clean the bathroom and room (a general clean) and change the bed, not clean someone's leg hair out of the bath and have to deal with their used sanitary towels and tampons left unwrapped and just thrown on the top of the bin.
Needless to say I won't ever be sharing a room with her again.

I hate people who look down their nose at cleaners and treat them like dirt Hmm (no pun intended)

RB68 · 03/05/2019 14:37

I always make sure everything is where it should be and that rubbish in the bin, bathroom tidy and towels/bathmat in bath and no wet floor etc. But as to stripping bed - no, if its a bit messy will pull it straight but no strip it etc

CammieKennaway · 03/05/2019 14:38

I always clean the hotel room when I'm leaving and I'm the same when we stay in a caravan on holiday - I strip the beds, throw all rubbish out and clean everywhere - it's often cleaner when we leave than it is when we arrive.
I just do it because it feels wrong not to, I guess. Maybe it's because my Nanna and Mum worked as cleaners and I saw first hand how much pain they'd be in at the end of the day sometimes.
I don't think you're weird OP :)

BarrenFieldofFucks · 03/05/2019 14:39

I wouldn't strip the bed, but everything else is pretty normal IMO

Mynotsoperfectlittlefamily · 03/05/2019 14:40

I strip the beds and put pillowcases and sheets and covers in separate piles. Helps to see if we have forgotten to pack, helps the housekeeper and makes sure that all the beds are changed (premier Inn family rooms with 3 beds). Also rinse out cups tie up bin bag if able and put towels in the bath. Every little helps tbh, I've done the job and hated touching sheets.

Lottieskeeper · 03/05/2019 14:40

I used to be a housekeeper for premier inn and was so grateful if a guest had stripped the bed. It really helped me out as rooms have to be done in a certain number of minutes.
The filty state some people leave the rooms in is really shocking.

Now if I stay somewhere I always strip the bed and leave things as clean/tidy as possible. Because I know how hard and unappreciated housekeepers work for minimum wage.
