God the twats are out in force tonight.

So if OP wasn’t pregnant and wanted to “spunk” £26 on a bottle of gin, not a problem. But because she wants to substitute a pleasant alcoholic drink with something vaguely similar people are baulking at the cost. “Just drink x / y x” isn’t the same though is it, because fruit juice / coke / water is nowt bloody like a g&t and at least seedlip (in op’s tastebuds) is a good replica.

Bluntness100 · 02/05/2019 05:39

Why people disagreed with her was because she said it smelled and tasted like real gin. It doesn't. No one but no one would think it does.

If the op had said, I'm pregnant, looking for an alternate drink, found seedlip, I love it, it doesn't taste anything like gin, and yes at 26 pounds it's very expensive but I'd thoroughly recommend as an alternative to any alcohol. Then fair enough, you do you.

Other alcohol free drinks, beer, wine, whatever actually taste a bit like, well, beer, wine, whatever. The point here is seedlip tastes as much like gin as orange squash tastes like wine.

It's marketed as a alcohol free gin alternative, and the price point is eye wateringly high once you remove the tax element, at least double the price of actual gin. And as such, it's a hugely expensive flavoured water to add to your mixers.

If anyone likes it and it works for them, that's beyond fine, but people are allowed to say either they don't like it, or it doesn't taste like gin, or simply don't wish to pay that much for a soft drink.

It's not personal to the op, unless she actually owns the company that makes it.

RubyBoots7 · 02/05/2019 06:22

I bought the two different flavours when I was pregnant. It really didn't taste like gin to me. I wanted it to, so so badly!
I actually found it quite disappointingly meh and a lot of the contents of those two very expensive bottle are still sitting in my fridge despite my baby being quite old now. I tried it with all sorts of fever tree mixers, herbs and fruit slices and it really didn't do it for me sorry.

I preferred alcohol free koppaberg if you can manage the sugaryness. Some of the alcohol free fizzy wine I tried was passable. The regular alcohol free wine was grim.

Rafabella8 · 02/05/2019 06:23

I love Seedlip. It's not a juice - it's a botanical blend. The citrus blend is probably the most 'like gin' flavour out of the 3 available. Serve over ice and fever tree tonic. Personally I think it does taste like gin.

HBStowe · 02/05/2019 06:36

Why people disagreed with her was because she said it smelled and tasted like real gin. It doesn't. No one but no one would think it does.

Stop being so mental. This is a totally subjective point. Maybe you think it’s nothing like gin - fine! But the OP does think it’s like gin. Her opinion isn’t wrong just because you don’t share it!

I don’t think I’ve ever seen such weirdly aggressive and strident responses to a totally innocuous, harmless post before!

longwayoff · 02/05/2019 06:52

I have alcohol free gin. On tap. In my kitchen and bathroom.

NeatFreakMama · 02/05/2019 06:53

This thread is so weird, OP is just excited she found alcohol-free gin. I never knew so I’m definitely going to try it, I found alcohol-free Strawberry cider the other day that was delicious. Of course you could buy juice but i think the point is to feel like you’re drinking but don’t.

octonoughtcake3 · 02/05/2019 06:55

I’m pregnant too and tried this. It’s horrible and tastes nothing like gin. I would rather have some good tonic by itself.

MyCatHogsTheBed · 02/05/2019 07:01

Popping on to recommend to the OP and anybody else the flavoured fevertree tonics. One of them with ice and lemon and I'm a happy camper :)

floraloctopus · 02/05/2019 07:10

This has already been discussed here on a different thread as it's a rip off at over £23.
Poor shot OP.

NoParticularPattern · 02/05/2019 07:11

I’m not a gin drinker so it wouldn’t be my thin anyway, but I have never really understood the point of all the other alcohol free stuff either. I really like cider but I’d never buy an alcohol free one- namely because apparently they’re not that great but also because I can’t get my head around spending the same cash as it would cost me for actual alcohol, on something which is not actual alcohol. You pay a premium for alcohol because it’s a premium product, if you’re not wanting (or able to use) that premium product then what is the point in spending the exact same cash (or more!) when you could exist perfectly happily on soft drinks and water?! Anyway I’ve heard a lot of people say it’s a bit crap. If you like it, great! But you won’t be catching me shelling out £££ for something that does the same job as water.

KooMoo · 02/05/2019 07:16

Sorry OP I’ve tried it.

It is the most disgusting thing I’ve ever had past my lips!!! Oily mouth feel, tastes foul, awful stuff.

rabbitheadlights · 02/05/2019 07:23

I had it with lots of ice and a fever tree Indian tonic and lemon it made a perfectly passable 'g&t' to me

OP posts:
rabbitheadlights · 02/05/2019 07:26

The "point" is when I but real gin it's because I like the taste, the same applies to this so the price (to me anyway) is irrellevsnt

OP posts:
Smellslikemiddleagespirit · 02/05/2019 07:27

What an utterly baffling thread. Why are people so annoyed and incredulous?

I’m always looking for alcohol free alternatives that aren’t sweet, so thanks for the suggestion, OP.

rabbitheadlights · 02/05/2019 07:30

@RavenLG you have probably made my point better than I ☺️ I didn't expect to cause such a drama 🤔

OP posts:
rabbitheadlights · 02/05/2019 07:32

@smellslkemiddleagespirit I hadn't realised there was more than 1, it was the citrus one I had

OP posts:
Aberforthsgoat · 02/05/2019 07:33

genuinely don’t know why so many people have to make a pissy comment.

Op thinks it tastes like gin, other people don’t. It’s opinion and BOTH ARE FINE. But Jesus the amount of posters who seemingly can’t share an opinion without being a dick about it is astounding even for MN.

It's way overpriced. I would pay £10 for a non-alcoholic bottle, max.

SaskiaRembrandt · 02/05/2019 07:52

Are there alcohol free versions of other spirits?

MrsPinkCup · 02/05/2019 08:04

It's horrible was like drinking freshly mown grass steeped in water 🤢🤢🤢

Peridot1 · 02/05/2019 08:14

I drink too much and find it hard to find something that gives me the mental ‘ah and relax’ feel of the first drink of the evening. Soft drinks are just soft drinks. Alcohol free wines are mostly foul tasting to me. Which is because there is no alcohol in them so you don’t get the warmth and depth of flavour. I sometimes drink low alcohol white wine with soda water and ice and like that but it gets a bit repetitive. So I tried Seedlip with tonic and I like it. It ticks the boxes FOR ME. Feels like a proper drink. I like the flavour. I’ve tried two so far.

Yes it’s expensive and maybe they are taking the piss. But I think spending money on something that doesn’t damage my health is better than spending money on something that does. And yes I know water is free but it gets a bit boring after a while. Soft drinks are full of sugar or diet versions are full of crap.

Nobody is forcing anyone to buy it. If you don’t like it or think it’s too expensive that’s fine.

I think it’s great that there are more options for people who don’t want to drink alcohol but also don’t want to drink water or soft drinks all night. And soft drinks are bloody expensive in pubs anyway.

Maybe with different options Seedlip will have to review their pricing. I’ll definitely be trying the M&S version next. Although someone recommended their alcohol free rosé as being just like the real thing and it smelt of wee to me! Tasted horrible. To me. But others obviously like some alcohol free wines as there suddenly seems to be so many of them about.

So to sum up - we all like different things. We all have different reasons for drinking various things. Some of us are prepared to pay a bit more for something that does what we want it to do. And none of us need to be rude about other people’s choices.

GreytExpectations · 02/05/2019 08:16

Poor, OP. The nasty bitch brigade on Mumsnet seems to be out in full force! There was no need for people to be so rude, snide, snarky and judgmental of the OP because of her choice in drink- how pathetic. Is it so hard for people to have just said "Eh, I've tried it and didn't like it but if you do, that's great!" Instead of the snide and judgey comments that poured out?
Also @Bluntness100 you really don't seem to understand how opinions works. They are personal to each person, so if you don't think it tastes like Gin, and the OP does. Well, neither of you is wrong and neither of your is right as its your personal opinion. Does that make sense?

OP, I hope you didn't get too upset by the onslaught on here- completely uncalled for. I have never heard of it but glad you found something that works for you. I love a good gin so if I ever get the chance i'd probably give it a try :)

Bluntness100 · 02/05/2019 08:34

Lol, that's us told, the boss of mumsnet has dropped in and completely lost the rag under the user name grey expectations.

Oh, wait. That's just some random. 🤣
