To want a patio more than a holiday

We moved house last summer and are lucky to have a decent sized back garden that gets lots of sun especially in the evenings.

I would really like a patio- DH is less keen. We have a quote which is about what we budgeted for our summer holiday (nothing fancy- a week in France at a family friend’s holiday home).

AIBU to pick the patio so we can enjoy summer, barbecues, maybe eating outside? DH’s argument is that we don’t have young kids (TTC in a few months) so not really watching little ones playing etc and that we are in stressful jobs so holiday is needed.

Holiday every time for me.

Iggly · 30/04/2019 19:28

I think your dh is right. You can BBQ on grass etc?

WinterBerry7 · 30/04/2019 19:30

I’d go holiday.

FaFoutis · 30/04/2019 19:30

I agree with your DH. Plenty of time for patios in the future.

Sirzy · 30/04/2019 19:30

For me a holiday would be priority

Katterinaballerina · 30/04/2019 19:31

Why not compromise and agree to do the patio next year?

HotChocolateLover · 30/04/2019 19:31

Going against the grain but I reckon a patio would be awesome. You’d have it for years to enjoy whereas the holiday is just for a week.

TeaForDad · 30/04/2019 19:31

I'd do patio.

Kingslayer · 30/04/2019 19:32

I'm with you, I'd get the patio done

Leeds2 · 30/04/2019 19:32

I would agree to go on holiday this year, and do the patio next.

starbrightnight · 30/04/2019 19:32

I'd be like you, OP. A patio is for keeps - an investment in your property as well as your everyday lifestyle.

A holiday is just a holiday, and over in a fortnight.

DanielRicciardosSmile · 30/04/2019 19:33

I'd go for the patio also tbh.

Helplessfeeling · 30/04/2019 19:34

Patio. What do you open onto at the moment? Is it grass right up to the back door?

WineGummyBear · 30/04/2019 19:35

Another vote for the patio.

Greeneggsna · 30/04/2019 19:35

Patio... enjoy all summer not over in a week!

katienana · 30/04/2019 19:36

Get the patio done, then book the time off work (hopefully when its sunny) to enjoy it and have a weekend away somewhere maybe?

Squeegle · 30/04/2019 19:37

I would go for the patio and a stay cation this year

coralpig · 30/04/2019 19:38

We have a couple of slabs outside the back door then just lots of grass.
Thanks for the responses!

Patio every time. Much more enjoyment than a week away

NeedAUsernameGenerator · 30/04/2019 19:40

I'd have the holiday if you're TTC next year and get the patio done when you have a baby. You could always get a nice garden seat so you can still enjoy being outside.

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 30/04/2019 19:44

If you're ttc I'd go on holiday... could be the last relaxing one you have in a while.

Helplessfeeling · 30/04/2019 19:45

I don't understand why having a patio is something your DH associates with having kids. We used our patio for many years before the children came along.

StoneofDestiny · 30/04/2019 23:45

I'd do patio - place to relax every night, but if DH is so stressed he needs to go abroad to relax, maybe you need to go with that.

Expressedways · 01/05/2019 00:00

Normally I’d say the patio but definitely go for the holiday if you’re going to start TTC- if all goes to plan then it’s probably your last chance to have a truly relaxing break for YEARS! Barbecue on the grass or whatever crappy slabs you have at the moment, the patio can be done exactly as you want it next summer. If you have a newborn or are heavily pregnant next summer then the same can’t be said of the holiday! Or 0% credit card and do both??
