To want a patio more than a holiday

We moved house last summer and are lucky to have a decent sized back garden that gets lots of sun especially in the evenings.

I would really like a patio- DH is less keen. We have a quote which is about what we budgeted for our summer holiday (nothing fancy- a week in France at a family friend’s holiday home).

AIBU to pick the patio so we can enjoy summer, barbecues, maybe eating outside? DH’s argument is that we don’t have young kids (TTC in a few months) so not really watching little ones playing etc and that we are in stressful jobs so holiday is needed.

Holuday

I’d choose the patio, too. You will enjoy it for years to come. Holidays come and go and there’s so much stress getting it underway

janeybumtum · 01/05/2019 00:07

I'd choose the patio in preference, but I usually would choose something I need/am really keen to have done at home in preference to spending the money on a holiday

WattdeEll · 01/05/2019 00:50

If you live near me, do not buy a patio. It will invoke Sod’s Law and on your patio is laid and ready to be used we will have a really crap summer with cold and rain. We will all suffer. Go to France to guarantee us all a great summer Grin

EmmaGrundyForPM · 01/05/2019 02:31

I'd go for the patio. We had one laid a few years ago in our South West facing garden and it's brilliant. In summer we eat outside every day (weather permitting). Lots of bbq's . You can always take a week off work and relax at home if you need a break.

My vote goes for patio!

BadLad · 01/05/2019 03:05

Holiday for me.

Mummaofmytribe · 01/05/2019 03:08

I'd do the patio. A holiday would be lovely but if I could afford one or the other I would choose something that's going to make my day to day life happier rather than a one off event. But then I am a bit of a homebody Hmm

Alicewond · 01/05/2019 03:10

I would say I’d vote relationship first. Your patio will be someone else’s if you divorce. Go for the holiday, and enjoy each other’s company

madcatladyforever · 01/05/2019 03:34

Patio.

ChipSandwich · 01/05/2019 05:33

Patio. Holiday is fleeting. Patio is forever.

Bluntness100 · 01/05/2019 05:42

Totally the patio. I've just had ours redone. It's friggen awesome. We are already out there all the time and have had friends over and had dinner and drinks on it, I have my morning coffee out there, makes a huge difference daily. Not going a proper holiday this year as it cost so much. Totally and utterly worth it.

You can go to France any time. Having kids doesn't stop you, that's nuts. Defo get the patio done, it's the right time of year and you'll have a great summer sitting out their on it.

Qweenbee · 01/05/2019 06:01

Enjoy the holidays while you are childfree. Once they arrive holidays won't be the same and will be easier to sacrifice for a patio.

Orangeballon · 01/05/2019 06:01

Definitely patio, I love being in my garden, holiday is only for a week, patio is for ever.

countrygirl99 · 01/05/2019 06:04

If its cold and wet you won't want to be earing in the garden. If its dry you can put a table and chairs on the grass.

Bluntness100 · 01/05/2019 06:06

When you have kids will you realistically have the money for a patio?

And a table and chairs and a bbq on the grass is a bit shite, let's be honest.

SnowyAlpsandPeaks · 01/05/2019 06:26

I go with patio. I’ve had just grass and a slabs and it’s annoying.

SnowyAlpsandPeaks · 01/05/2019 06:26

*few slabs

HBStowe · 01/05/2019 06:42

Holiday for me every time. I’d go away this year and save a little extra each month from now on for the patio next summer.

ForalltheSaints · 01/05/2019 06:45

As modest a holiday as possible and saving towards the patio next year. Get more quotes.

Iris1654 · 01/05/2019 06:47

Patio!
Make him watch garden rescue ( rich brothers) they transform gardens and show what a worthwhile investment a garden is.
You can relax at home.
If you are ttc then when will you find money for the garden?

maddening · 01/05/2019 06:53

How much is your patio costing? I have just bought my slabs for £350 20m2 sandstone and will be £200 to lay, just need to buy the sand and sub-base.

Peachbubble · 01/05/2019 07:00

I vote for the patio!

MajesticWhine · 01/05/2019 07:02

For me it would be the holiday, and start saving for the patio.

redhotchill · 01/05/2019 07:02

Holiday. It's a slippery slope forfeiting your holiday time, especially as one of you feels you need that break.

Next year it'll be no holiday due to new baby, the year after no holiday due to redecorating etc etc.

But our holidays are a priority
