Don’t want to go through with second part of termination!

Superscaredx · 30/04/2019 19:21

Posted on here for traffic mainly but I need help.
I am currently 8 weeks pregnant and decided on a termination (please don’t judge, my reasons are completely valid) Today was the first appointment where I took mifepristone. The next appointment is on Thursday and I 100 percent do not want to go. I regret my decision so much and I don’t know what to do. I don’t even know if you can continue with the pregnancy after taking mifepristone, or what it does to the pregnancy! I hope to God it hasn’t effected the baby but I’m worrying so bad. I really want this baby and if I could turn back time I wouldn’t have took the tablet. Anyone with experience on this or works in the industry...please help? Loads of American website say you can have progesterone shots to try and reverse it..but I don’t know anywhere in the UK that would do that. I am so lost.

post evidence backing up your statistics

The patient information given to me when I took it. NHS hospital. Four years ago.

My advice to the OP was to ring the ward or clinic where she is being treated in order to get professional advice.

Your advice appears to be a link to a six year old study with a limited number of participants and an insistence that everything will come up roses.

Iggity · 30/04/2019 20:38

@ewhitsahooman, I’d bet username321 is medically qualified. Non medics/scientists don’t tend to throw the term RCT into normal conversation.

December2018 · 30/04/2019 20:41

I'm so sorry you're going thorough this OP just offering you a handhold and I hope everything works out for you 💐

Username321 · 30/04/2019 20:42

@oohgossip Mifepristone (the first drug) is simply an anti-progesterone, it stops the release of progesterone that is supporting the pregnancy but does not actually stop the pregnancy. Low progesterone levels are linked to miscarriage hence it can still lead to miscarriage but it can also do nothing. It also softens the cervix to make it easier to open when the next stage continues.

When taken with Misoprostol (the second drug) it induces contractions to expel the fetus. Misoprostol is also used to induce contractions following a stillbirth also. It acts on the uterus and causes it to expel the products.

agnurse · 30/04/2019 20:45

You can look into abortion pill reversal. It's a thing and it does work. Usually it involves taking high doses of progesterone.

MingeOnFire · 30/04/2019 20:47

They can't (and won't) say you have to carry on the treatment. I used to work in gynae, and occasionally people did change their minds, and I've known of people who have gone on to have normal pregnancies and healthy babies Flowers

Username321 · 30/04/2019 20:47

@ewitsahooman I have not once said “everything will come up roses” I have said there ARE risks, I have said there can be no guarantees and a miscarriage could be induced due to this. I have posted research confirming this. I have also said there is a chance that the pregnancy will continue normally also however, in fact a higher chance than not. That is not a guarantee that is not saying this will definitely happen it’s simply saying there is a possibility IF this is want the OP wants. I’m sorry if you were given different information and I am sorry if this is a personal and sensitive subject for you. I am not intending to be controversial I am telling the OP she does not have to continue this procedure if she does not want to, it is HER choice.

@Superscaredx aw Thanks I don't want to give you false hope but I know someone who had both first and second set of tablets, had all miscarriage symptoms then 6 weeks later still hadn't had AF so clinic scanned and she was 14 weeks with a healthy baby. I really hope you get the result you want.

Justajot · 30/04/2019 20:52

I can't see why you would need to tell anyone at an antenatal classes that you took the first pill. You might need to tell someone like a midwife in a 1:1 appointment and have it recorded in your notes (but I can't confirm this), though I can't see why you'd need to raise this every appointment. But antenatal classes are generally group sessions with a midwife telling you about birth and breastfeeding. Personal medical details are not generally shared in those classes.

Annietheacrobat · 30/04/2019 20:55

Ewhitsahooman 6 years is not that long ago. I don't know why you keep
going on about it being out of date. As long as the same drugs are being used the results are applicable.

105 patients is also a reasonable number of patients for a study of this nature. As user 321 said it is an uncommon scenario and you are never going to be able to conduct a RCT. Cancer treatments are given on the basis of much smaller studies.

To the OP. This must be such a difficult situation. Take care

speakout · 30/04/2019 21:01

No advice OP, just a hand hold. X

ElektraLOL · 30/04/2019 21:02

I have not read the whole thread but I remember a lady posting the same thing as you @superscaredx some years ago on MN. She had the first part of the termination then changed her mind. Luckily, in her case her baby survived the tablet. So you never know. But whatever happens, don’t blame yourself :)

Don't have any advice or guarantees.
Hete to hold your hand and offer you.support. No judgment here.
Where you not counselled before the first part of the procedure.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 30/04/2019 21:22

@OP before you get in contact with any of the details Epiphany52 has posted, this is a religious organisation - something to bear in mind.

SirBobblyofSock · 30/04/2019 21:26

Hello, arrange an urgent GP appointment and ask them to phone the UK Teratology Information Service (0344 8920909) who will assess your risks of miscarriage and other adverse outcomes.

SirBobblyofSock · 30/04/2019 21:31

While the first pill can cause miscarriage on its own, it's the second that appears to raise the risk of very specific malformations

^^This. The OP needs medical advice, not “help” from a pro life religious group.

Hand hold for you, OP Flowers

Ladyofthenuvarings · 30/04/2019 21:47

I'm afraid there is no going back now you will have to continue with the termination as mifepristone stops the foetus growing by blocking hormones and the pregnancy is no longer viable. I know some people have said that mifepristone will not necessarily cause abortion which is true however the pregnancy will not continue to grow.
I'm really sorry you're going through this, please do and try to speak to someone about how you're feeling.Flowers

ShowMeTheKittens · 30/04/2019 21:47

Very sorry you have this horrible regret. But you say you had a genuine reason for termination. I think you could talk to a helpline but really this may be for the best?
