AIBU to not get why everyone seems to hate lanyards?

Sort of re the pockets thread - I keep my work pass round my neck on a lanyard I was given with the pass for the purpose. This means I always have it so can get through the building easily, never lose it, don't have to carry it in a bag (or pocket!) etc.

I am however in a minority. Everyone else at work including my dh seems to go to great lengths to hide them - putting them in wallets, keeping them in bags, leavim them on desks etc. On the odd occasion I've caught someone wearing one, they've turned the card round in the little bracket do you can't see the photo. I mean your face is right there at the top of your neck, what do you think you are hiding??

Why do folk hate on the lanyard??

I have big breasts, they hate ID/passes bouncing around on them,

Sofagirl · 01/05/2019 18:09

Because they get in the way and they feel uncomfortable

Because no one needs to see a crappy photo of themselves constantly

SuperSue77 · 01/05/2019 18:10

I worked in a workplace where you had to have yours on show at all times so I got used to wearing it, prior to that I’d leave it lying around and that was a pain. Now I’m so used to it I wear it all the time and feel a bit naked without it! We need ours for the printer and lots of security doors in the building so it’s always on, and I’ve never lost it once.
My boss keeps his in his wallet and I was thought it weird that he walked around the building with his wallet in his hand, like he might suddenly get asked for sponsorship or to contribute to a leaving card - then he explained he kept his pass in there and it made sense. Still easier to keep it around your neck in my opinion.
It was also useful for me when I went into a local dry cleaners - they saw it and said “oh you work there, you get a 15% discount”. Bonus!

Aridane · 01/05/2019 18:19

I always thought that people who work in offices wear them outside of work to show they work in an office job and that’s better than retail?

Nah - it's so we don't lose the sodding security pass

Purplecatshopaholic · 01/05/2019 18:26

I have no issue with lanyards! I wear one for work and need it to get round the security doors in the building so always wear it at work. You are right though that some people dont like them for some reason - we are all supposed to wear them but many of my colleagues dont

Frazzledstar1 · 01/05/2019 18:53

I wear mine all the time! Ours aren’t photo ones, just a little black fob that swipes you through the door. But loads of colleagues still put them in pockets, on car keys etc etc. I don’t always have pockets and honestly if it’s not attached to my person I tend to put it down at some point during the day and then forget where and have to wander the office looking for it. Same can be said for my specs tbh though Confused

theWarOnPeace · 01/05/2019 19:03

I have tonnes of passes, due to working across different areas of a reasonably sensitive sector.

My hatred of the lanyard is strong, but for most places I work with it is absolutely compulsory. I’ve now got a hook by the front door for all my various official lanyards and their passes. If they ever do ‘Through the Keyhole’ on me, they’ll assume I’m a particularly dull and straight-laced spy!

LOL at people getting wound up when anyone wears their lanyard in Tescos. Put it this way. I hate wearing lanyards, they drive me bloody nuts, but I can’t get in or out and in some places I have to go through multiple security doors just to get into one building or room or to get out. The lanyards stay on. I hate them, and yet have been known to crawl into bed with mine still on. Showered with one on. Shopped, watched school plays, picked up kids, and been to the doctors with one on. I’ve done as pp said, and tried to open the front door with one, and tried to pay contactless with one. The cursed things are the bane of my life, but I’d forget it if I took it off during the day. How can anyone be trying to look cool wearing a lanyard??

wowfudge · 01/05/2019 19:11

I hate lanyards too - you have to bend down to the door pads at work to scan your access card and they are bulky and irritating round your neck. Instead I have a fob on an elasticated clip which I put on the waistband of my skirt or trousers or clip to the neckline of dresses.

Pinkflipflop85 · 01/05/2019 19:13

Mine drives me mad! Has to be worn at all times. Took it off in class once because I was getting fed up with hitting kids in the face with it but got caught without it on.....the telling off that I got was ridiculous!

Often have mine on in the shop after school. Usually because I have forgotten it's there.

Fowles94 · 01/05/2019 19:13

Correct ones are not a strangulation hazard any more than any other item (they release when pulled). They are very useful and anybody entering our care home, outside of family, are to present a identification card so lanyard is the best place.

Yinderling · 01/05/2019 19:17

I got into a national trust place for free as I accidentally still had my work lanyard on. The just saw a lanyard and waved me through. Could save a bloody fortune!

Polarbearflavour · 01/05/2019 19:19

I last worked in retail over a decade ago as a student but when the local office workers came in at lunch / after work with their lanyards, some of them definitely looked down on us!

I work in an office now and have 3 different passes. I’m not allowed to have them on display outside of the gates. But in other office jobs I’ve never felt the need to wear my lanyard outside of the office.

MilkGoatee · 01/05/2019 19:40

I don't like the pressure of something around my neck that is heavy. A very light-weight necklace is as much as I can bear. Usually, lanyards are also an awkward length constantly banging against the edge of the desk when I move around.

wooo69 · 01/05/2019 20:01

At my work we have an instruction that you have to wear your lanyard round your neck. Passes are needed to open doors and use printers/copiers. About two years ago someone “tailgated” into the building and was able to access a changing room and steal car keys and the car. The person who’s car it was was outside at the time and saw the car been driven away, she rang her partner to ask where he was going and he said he was out for his lunchtime run and wasn’t in her car. CCTV showed the thief had been all over the building unchallenged. Now we have to challenge anyone we see without their lanyard. Over 1200 staff, some office based, some not, building has 6 floors with 2 wings on each floor, you cannot possibly know everyone. BTW car was recovered - months later.

kennycat · 01/05/2019 20:10

I'm a teacher and it's a right pain in the bum. I spend most of the day leaning over small desks so frequently hit a child with it, dangle it in a painting or get it caught on the corner of the table. My solution is to wear it around my waist. I'm lucky I'm slim enough for this, I realise some may not have the option. It also means that it is at the same height as door swipes so I don't have to keep bending down to go through doors, spilling my drink/dropping my books or papers on the floor.

But I would love to do away with lanyards completely. They are a pest.

101waystoworry · 01/05/2019 20:19

I mean your face is right there at the top of your neck, what do you think you are hiding?? This made me giggle!
I wear my lanyard for uni. You are right, most people at uni put them in their bag, etc. I seriously cannot be bothered with the faff, I need it often to tap into rooms, to get into the building etc. Why not just keep it on and be then there is no fading about!

Ivegotthree · 01/05/2019 20:22

I think people wearing lanyards at my work look a bit lame. As if they're really excited to be working in our office.

It is totally different for eg doctors, all of whom I admire and forgive for wearing their lanyards.

But where I work (media) I think some people are really excited to be there and I slightly diss those who wear their lanyards with pride because obvs I think I'm better than that!

PanBasher · 01/05/2019 20:28

I have to wear a lanyard at work. I attach mine to my bra strap and i keep my ID card inside my bra.
I can't stand having it round my neck and the ID card bouncing on my large chebs.

herbafresca · 01/05/2019 20:31

Blimey i dont over think it. I just put it around my neck and forget about it. If i dont put it around my neck, i forget it

user1471592953 · 01/05/2019 20:49

I hate them round my neck because they get caught on the underside of my desk when I’m typing.

I wear mine round my waist.

dontpanik · 01/05/2019 20:53

I use these which I catch on my trousers, skirt. Not much use with a dress though.

AIBU to not get why everyone seems to hate lanyards?
StrawberrySquash · 01/05/2019 21:15

I find them uncomfortable and they look shit. I used to have to wear a pass and had it on a pully out waist thing like linked in the post above. One of the things I like about my current work is don't have to wear it. Lives in the handbag. Wave handbag at door to get in and out. Forget about it the rest of the time.

CaravanHero · 01/05/2019 21:22

My lanyard goes around my neck just before I enter the building and stays there until I leave.

I don’t think about it, it doesn’t get in my way or have any impact on me and I’m pretty much guaranteed not to lose the fucker and get told off by security...win win.

ginforall · 01/05/2019 21:26

I hate mine too, mainly because it means I can't wear my long necklaces anymore. We are told we have to wear them. We once had an inspection and were warned that if we weren't wearing them the inspection team would write your name down - how they would know your name if you're not wearing it I have no idea Grin

Supermum29 · 01/05/2019 21:40

I used to hate these but I have to use it for all the doors at work and printing etc so just far easier to always have it with me.

I’ve got so used to it now I’ll often forget to take it off as soon as I get home and don’t bother at lunch as I forget it’s there to be honest.
