AIBU to not get why everyone seems to hate lanyards?

Sort of re the pockets thread - I keep my work pass round my neck on a lanyard I was given with the pass for the purpose. This means I always have it so can get through the building easily, never lose it, don't have to carry it in a bag (or pocket!) etc.

I am however in a minority. Everyone else at work including my dh seems to go to great lengths to hide them - putting them in wallets, keeping them in bags, leavim them on desks etc. On the odd occasion I've caught someone wearing one, they've turned the card round in the little bracket do you can't see the photo. I mean your face is right there at the top of your neck, what do you think you are hiding??

Why do folk hate on the lanyard??

For many of the reasons above I refuse to wear mine and am waiting to see what the consequences are. Do you think anyone has actually been dismissed for refusal to wear one round their neck?
( I happily carry mine in a pocket/bag whatever)

Armadillostoes · 30/04/2019 20:55

Another one bemused at the idea of a lanyard as a status symbol! I never saw my job as glamorous. Everyone in my workplace has one, regardless of their role. I wear mine because if I don't I forget to take it with me and get locked out of my work area when I wander off to the toilet.

Username321 · 30/04/2019 20:58

I quite like mine, it’s useful for hanging random things from it. I do tend to tuck it into my pocket and forget about it however only as we are required to remove it for direct patient care (infection control risk). Without it my pockets would be overflowing however.

MedSchoolRat · 30/04/2019 21:02

I tuck mine under bra strap. Can't stand it jingling (I walk fast).
Am trying to build up courage to wear a completely different colourful lanyard. Someone today had a football team lanyard, & someone other day had Harry Potter one. Still new at workplace though, & am not yet brave.

HollaHolla · 30/04/2019 21:10

I wear my pass clipped to my belt or pocket. It gets in my way constantly around my neck - bashes on the desk, catches in my clothes, annoys my seatbelt... argh!! I’ve got one of the stretchy/pull things on it, as we have to swipe in and out of everywhere, use it for printers, the canteen, etc. I do look like a shiny crack whore in it though, so I wear my student card facing out, with my staff one behind it (another one working in HE waves.)

DrWhy · 30/04/2019 21:11

We have to have our passes visible in the office and security can and do stop people if it’s not visible. This generally means having it on a lanyard. I hate mine as my boobs mean it hangs away from my chest underneath them and bounces when I walk. I’ve now got a pass holder I can clip to my belt loops and has a stretchy line so I can still use the pass for the doors.

BillywilliamV · 30/04/2019 21:18

I have dipped one in my lunchtime soup as I bent to sit at the table then stood up and sloshed it all over a white shirt.
When I was very pregnant I went to the loo and in bending down to pull up my knickers managed to get lanyard inextricably tangled in the lace in the top of my pants, unable to straighten up, unable to pull pants down or up,nearly fainted due to blood rushing to head. Ended up having to brutally rip out knicker elastic in good and expensive pair of maternity briefs.
This is why I do not like Lanyards

reluctantbrit · 30/04/2019 21:20

I don’t wear one. My key card is at a key ring together with a toggle to create a passcode and a small key for a cupboard. Far to heavy to wear around your neck.

I also have a fairly large bra size, a long necklace is absolutely annoying and is constant in the way.

Mine lives on my desk unless I need it or in my bag when not at work.

Lovelydovey · 30/04/2019 21:26

Policy where I work is for all staff to wear lanyards (with different colours for permanent staff, contractors and visitors) and a culture of challenging those not wearing them (or unescorted visitors).

Lovelydovey · 30/04/2019 21:27

Nb our lanyards come apart if pulled on - very useful if you catch it on something!

exLtEveDallas · 30/04/2019 21:27

We have to wear our lanyards when in school - we wouldn't get in and out of the security doors without them. Some people have ID cards on them as well, but I don't because I was ill the day Tempest came in!

I used to have a lovey long, magnetic, beaded lanyard, but when we moved to the MAT we had to start wearing a school one. They are boring, school colours and too short so I sewed two together and now my keys/beeper hang closer to my waist rather than sitting on my boobs. I don't have an issue with wearing it and often forget I've got it on.

managedmis · 30/04/2019 21:27

Hate me a lanyard

BrightYellowDaffodil · 30/04/2019 21:28

I quite like mine. I'm proud of the organisation I work for and I like my LGBT+ rainbow lanyard. I'm less keen on the photo but at least it's fading now...

I do tend to take it off at my desk though as it gets caught on the desk edge.

callmeadoctor · 30/04/2019 21:31

I don't mind mine, I do forgetI have it on though hence I may be spotted in a shop (sorry). i would be interested to know the exact percentage of people hurt in a driving accident by their lanyard!!!!! (minuscule I reckon, health and safety gone mad!)

jackparlabane · 30/04/2019 21:34

We have to wear them and security won't let you to the main door without seeing, even if they know you. The lanyards are long enough that the badges are around the waist on everyone, so go between my breasts comfortably!
I've found the rainbow ones are the nicest as they're soft against my neck and also can go in the wash and never look grubby, unlike yellow network ones or cheap black ones.
Much better than clip - on badges which assumed you were a man with a breast pocket.

countrymousesussex · 30/04/2019 21:37

A child in my class once asked if we (teachers) wear them so we always know how to spell our surnames 😂

Babyroobs · 30/04/2019 21:42

I hate mine - it dangles on my laptop, in my way when I'm trying to write or in my tea.

SittHakim · 30/04/2019 21:44

Ours is a security requirement - if I don't wear it, I get stopped even by security officers and police who know me. It's a plain black one, though I sometimes stick a badge on it. It does make the back of my neck sore: I occasionally consider wearing collared shirts just to protect me, but I'm not ironing five shirts a week.

OutInTheCountry · 30/04/2019 21:51

I used to wear one which got me access to the building and through various interior security doors. I once got home after a very long day and couldn't understand why my lanyard wouldn't make my front door flip open Blush

The picture on it was taken in my early 20s, I didn't think I'd changed that much in 10 years until some-one said 'oh god, is that you'. I promptly went to get a new picture done.

ConkerGame · 30/04/2019 22:06

I’m with you OP, I always wear mine at work - that way I never lose it/ get locked out in the toilet corridor!

cricketmum84 · 30/04/2019 22:07

I'm another one who takes it off when I'm sat at my desk, it hangs in the most awkward position and is constantly bloody clattering against my desk and keyboard.

I just have to make sure I remember to pick it up if I go out or to the loo otherwise I have to ring the doorbell and do the walk of shame!

Downunderduchess · 30/04/2019 22:30

I have to wear my work ID at all times in my work place, strict rules. However, I have replaced the lanyard with ribbon. I keep several different colours in my drawer at work and use whichever goes with my outfit that day. The official lanyard is too thick around my neck and annoys me, the ribbons are thinner and quite pretty.

Pollaidh · 30/04/2019 22:31

Ours has a safety clasp that releases if pulled, where I worked before it was a metal bead design, which, when caught by the wind crossing site, it could actually strangle you.

People shouldn't be wearing them outside the office/site - that's a security risk. And surely it shouldn't be hidden away/in pocket because then it's harder for people in office to identify who shouldn't be there.

UtterlyPerfectCartoonGiraffe · 30/04/2019 22:58

Ladies of bosom! I got so fed up with my lanyard twatting me, my desk and other people’s heads that I threaded the fabric bit under the rib cage strap at the front of my bra, through my cleavage and then did it up round my neck. Buttoned up my shirt so the lanyard was poking out but the strap was under my shirt and between my boobs. Game changer. Until you realise you have to chest bump the door sensor to get out and people start laughing at you Blush

Peaseblossom22 · 30/04/2019 22:59

I hate mine because it is effectively suspended from my chest so it makes my chest look bigger . It also clanks on the desk and gets in the way
